Gallegos -- Telles"Gordo" Gallegos, who rose from delivering newspapers to become a pressroom foreman during a career that spanned nearly 50 years, died Wednesday at his Clairemont home. He was 85. The cause of death was complications from diabetes and heart disease. Mr. Gallegos was a journeyman printer at the Albuquerque Journal when he left his native New Mexico in the 1940s and eventually joined the Union-Tribune Publishing Co. Before retiring in 1978, he served as a pressroom foreman for the company, which then published the morning San Diego Union and the evening San Diego Tribune. The papers merged in 1992 to form The San Diego Union-Tribune. While living in San Diego, Mr. Gallegos played handball as a member of the San Diego Rowing Club and became a regular at Torrey Pines Golf Course. He was a member of the Torrey Pines Senior Golf Association. He played golf every Thursday until a year ago, when he suffered a foot injury caused by his diabetes. Mr. Gallegos married his school sweetheart, Marie Baca, in 1934. They had been married nearly 50 years when she died in 1984. As a young man in New Mexico, Mr. Gallegos played third base for an amateur softball team that traveled to nearby states to compete. He was in high school when he began delivering newspapers. He is survived by his second wife, Sadie Romero; daughters, Marianne Correa and Mercedes Madrid, both of San Diego, CA; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services were held Saturday at Goodbody Mortuary. Donations are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.
