Tilton -- Corwin Curtis"Bill" Tilton, 87, passed over on January 23, 2000 at home in Sandia Park, surrounded by his family. He was born March 6, 1912 in Catlin, IL, the youngest of nine children of Cora Little Tilton and Ralph Russell Tilton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret in September, 1999; a son, Corwin; his parents; and his brothers and sisters, Clara, Helen, Eunice, Bernice, Vance, Sam and Frank. He is survived by his daughters, Mary Elizabeth Tilton and Mallinda Dempsey; son-in-law, Frank Dempsey; and grandchildren, Kirk Grubbs, Matthew Grubbs, Christopher Dempsey, Aaron Dempsey, Dacia Dempsey; and his special friend and namesake, Corwin"Cory" Dempsey. He is also survived by his brothers, Joseph and sister-in-law, Blanche Tilton of Houston, TX, sister-in-law, Charlotte Toulouse and Jim Toulouse of Albuquerque, and sister-in-law, Betty Johnson also of Albuquerque; and a host of loving nieces and nephews who adored him. In addition, he leaves Gerl, the last in a long line of Boston Bull dogs with the same name. Bill came to Albuquerque in 1926 to join his mother and brother, Vance. He graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1930 and served his country in the Navy during World War II. He and his family ran Tilton's Store in Sandia Park for 43 years, and was Postmaster until 1977 when he retired. He married Margaret Johnson in 1948 and raised two daughters. They had the good fortune to be surrounded by their children and grandchildren up until the end. Bill was a quiet, unassuring man who counted among his good friends through the years and old villagers of San Antonio, authors, nuclear physicists, vacationers, picnickers, and hundreds of children to whom he handed out candy to the dismay of their parents. His passing will leave a void in the life of his family and friends and a last link with a world we will never know. The sorrow of his loss is mitigated by the joy in knowing he is with Margie. In accordance with his wishes, he has been cremated with no services. Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, 5810 Lomas NE 87110, the American Diabetic Assn., 525 San Pedro NE 87108, or the Animal Humane Assn. of NM, 615 Virginia SE 87108.
