Green -- Dorothy Myra Welles Green, 91, passed away in Albuquerque on Wednesday, May 3, 2000, of natural causes. A longtime resident of western Colorado, she had lived in Albuquerque since early 1998. Mrs. Green was born December 12, 1908, in Melville, ND, where her father was a Congregational Minister. On December 31, 1936, she married Roger Green, whom she met at Northland College, Ashland, WI. Both were teachers by profession. Throughout her life, Dorothy participated fully in church and community activities. She was an active member of the Grand Junction United Church of Christ and in the 1980's took a leading role in resettling two refugee Cambodian families sponsored by the church. She volunteered at Hospice, the local library, the League of Women voters, various nursing homes, and anywhere else she saw a need. She spent several years home-teaching students too ill to attend school, and later taught defensive driving to AARP classes. In all her activities, she was known for her quick smile, enthusiasm, and interest in others. With her husband, Roger, Dorothy traveled extensively around the United States and the world. Some of their destinations were the Middle East, Europe and Latin America. In retirement, they taught for two years at the church-sponsored American Girls College in Izmir, Turkey, as well as at a tiny school in Gateway, CO. After her husband's death, Dorothy continued to pack her suitcase on short notice. Her trips included a marathon Land Rover trek from London to Yemen, at the tip of the Arabian Peninsula, as well as visits to India and Indonesia. The nomadic life came naturally after living in numerous Midwestern parishes with her parents, and then marrying a man who loved to move and travel. Dorothy is survived by four children, Peggy Hanson of McLean, VA, Ginie Capan of Albuquerque, Doug Green of Walden, CO, and Dave Green of Vancouver, WA. She has seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, who call her"Grandma D." A vesper memorial service is planned for Saturday, 6:00 p.m., at Monte Vista Christian Church, 3501 Campus Blvd. NE, with Rev. Michelle Tatlock officiating. A memorial remembrance will be arranged later for friends in Grand Junction. French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE.
