Sherman -- Elba Gonzalez Sherman died quietly at home on July 28th. Born in Nueva Aldea, Chile, she earned undergraduate and Master's degrees in English from the University of Chile. Thereafter, she taught for a time in Cauquenes. Following her marriage to a North American at the family home in Chillan, she lived in New York, Madison, Wisconsin, Minorca in the Balearic Islands, and London. She traveled to 23 countries and several foreign colonies, including Gibraltar, the Territory of Ifni, and the Spanish Sahara. In Capetown, South Africa, she hobnobbed with members of Parliament and noted heart surgeon, Dr. Christian Barnard. She moved to Albuquerque, September, 1972, and earned another M.A., this time in Education, at the University of New Mexico. Prior to her retirement, August, 1999, she taught Spanish for 19 years at the Albuquerque Public Schools. Her final four years at Truman Middle School were her greatest joy. She was an ardent student of flamenco. Until very recently, she danced with fervent dedication under the painstaking tutelage of Pablo Rodarte. Perhaps her truest passion was poetry. Though her dream of publishing a personal anthology went unfilled her spirited poetic salute to the Mexican Cinco de May observance graced much of the front page of El Hispano News, May 107, 1992. Aside from her husband, Richard, she is survived by a daughter, Carmen of Washington, DC; a son, Morgan of New York; a sister, Maria Cristina Gonzalez Casanueva of Chillan; and various Chilean relatives. Funeral services and burial will take place in Chillan, Chile. A memorial service will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Church, Coal Pl., at University SE, Wednesday, August 2, at 7:00 p.m.
