Cooney -- Kathleen Agnes "Kay" Cooney, passed away at home Thursday morning in Albuquerque, after a short illness. Born in Chicago, Illinois on April 9, 1910. Kay was 90 years old and was one of four children born to Daniel Cummins Kinane and Jo Hanna Mariah Kelly Kinane, both of whom emigrated from Ireland in the 1890's. Her spouse, James B. Cooney, a prominent New Mexico attorney, preceded her in death in October of 1979. Her three siblings, Margaret Mary Whelan, William Kinane and Daniel Kinane are also deceased. Mrs. Cooney moved with her young family to Albuquerque in 1945. She was active in Catholic Daughters of America, and in each Catholic parish in which she lived, including Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, St. Charles, Holy Ghost, Our Lady of Fatima, and was a current member of Risen Savior. She was employed for many years with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and later served as Administrative Assistant to the Dean of the Graduate School of the University of New Mexico. She worked as Assistant to the Principal of St. Mary's High School for a number of years. And served for several years as assistant to the Right Reverend Francis O'Byrne, who was pastor of St. Anne's Church on Albuquerque's West Side. Kay attended Providence High School in Chicago, Illinois. Following graduation, she served as executive secretary to the CEO of Illinois Power and Light in Chicago. She is survived by one daughter, Margaret Mary Cooney; two sons, James D. Cooney, and John D. Cooney and wife, Jill L. Marron, all of Albuquerque, in addition to 16 grandchildren, Kathleen Agnes Ritschel, Colleen Anne Cooney, James William Cooney, Daniel Joseph Cooney, Maureen Johanna Cooney, Eileen Marie Cooney, Michael Phillip Donahue, James Patrick Donahue, Kevin John Donahue, Daniel Timothy Donahue, Mary Rose Donahue, Matthew James Cooney, James Bernard Cooney, Sean Patrick Cooney, Laura Anne Cooney and Marron Anne Cooney; great-grandchildren, Anne and Devon Ritschel, Caroline Cooney. The family wishes to express its deep thanks to Presbyterian Hospice for their extraordinary support during this difficult time. A Rosary will be held on Sunday, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, 10:00 a.m., at Prince of Peace Church, with Father Mondragon, Celebrant. Friends may visit Sunday, from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Chapel.
