Smelser -- Mariea Louise Dahl (Lawler) Smelser lost her battle with breast cancer on September 30, 2000. A longtime Albuquerque resident, she was born October 22, 1936 in Prince Edward Island, Canada. After graduating from Prince of Wales College, she dedicated her life to nursing. She worked at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque for over 20 year and then continued working at other local health care facilities, including Carrie Tingley Children's Hospital, Rio Rancho Nursing Center, and other nursing homes. She is survived by her husband, Samuel H. Smelser; her children, Elizabeth M. and her husband, Robert J. Dandy, Jr., John E. Lawler, Carla P. Lawler, Joseph A. Smelser; her step-children, Lawrence A. Smelser, Michael W. Smelser, and Theresa M. Smelser; her grandchildren, Ashley A.M. Latimore and Abigail E. Dandy; her brother, C. Joseph Dahl and family; as well as by numerous family, friends and loved ones. A Rosary will be held Friday, October 6, 7:00 p.m., at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 4020 Lomas Blvd., and a Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, October 7, 10:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Fatima. A private burial will be held at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in her honor to the American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
