Calhoun -- Constance C. Calhoun passed away peacefully on Friday afternoon, October 18, 2002 at the Cottages of Albuquerque where she resided for the past two years. She had lived with dignity with Alzheimer's for six years. Our mother was born on Saturday, March 27, 1920 to Walter Forrest and Mabel Pollock Carpenter in Mishawaka, IN. In her early childhood the family moved to South Bend, IN. She attended St. Mary's College - Notre Dame University and became a registered nurse. She was sworn into the Army Air Corps as a Second Lieutenant in October 1942. She received orders to report for duty at Bowman Field, Louisville, KY. On February 9, 1943, she married 2nd Lieutenant James Robert Calhoun. Soon after, she resigned from the military devoting her life to being an Army wife and mother. She continued with volunteer nursing services at military installations throughout the world including tours in Japan, Germany and Hawaii. Upon their retirement, they became interested in genealogy and traveled the world over doing research and visiting friends. She wrote a book about our family history as a legacy for future generations. She also did the research for many other people helping them to trace their family history. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, James Calhoun, in 2001; her brother, Lieutenant Walter Richard Carpenter, a pilot whose plane was shot down over Europe in WWII; and Patricia Ann Calhoun, infant daughter. She is survived by daughter, Judith Nichols and husband, Roy; grandchildren, James and Julie and husband, Oscar; great-grandchildren, Alexander, Kristy and Josh; son, James Richard Calhoun and wife, Carol, and grandchildren, Christine, Austin and Whitney; daughter, Nancy Martinez and husband, Dave, and grandchildren, Sean, Brett, Marisa and Pete, Keith and Amanda, and great grandson, William James; daughter Kathy Zangara and husband, Ken, and grandchildren, Jennifer, K.C., and Ashley; Our mother was always there for her family and friends and will forever remain in our hearts and an inspiration in our lives. Her family expresses their deepest gratitude to the staff of Cottages of Albuquerque for their exceptionally loving care. Services will be held Thursday, October 24, 2002, 10:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE with Chaplain Lemuel Boyles, Col. USAF (Ret.) officiating. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM 2:00 p.m. Friends may visit French Mortuary, Thursday, October 24, 2002 from 9:30 a.m. to time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 8100 Mountain Road NE, Suite 102, 87110. Arrangements by French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel.
