Hanks -- Frances Herrick Hanks, 79, passed away on Saturday, November 30, 2002, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in the presence of her family.¯An avid tennis player, Franma,¯as she liked to be called, directed the tennis program for Albuquerque City Parks and Recreation from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. Moving her permanent residence to Christmas Tree Canyon near Mora, NM, in the early 1970s, she coached the Mora HS girls tennis team from the 1970s to the early 1980s. In the 1950s and 1960s, she was a nationally ranked woman's amateur tennis player in California and Middle-Atlantic regions. Born in the Chestnut Hill area of Philadelphia, PA, in 1923, she was the Phila. Jr. golf champion and an All-American field hockey player. She graduated from Philadelphia's Springside School in 1940 and married Ralph Hanks, a naval aviator and World War II ace, in 1945. During World War II, she served as a driver for the U.S. Army Air Corps¯Women's Auxiliary. She and Ralph spent 28 years moving across the country with the U.S. Navy, living in Maryland, California, Florida, Texas, Virginia, and New Mexico. Franma is survived by her husband of 57 years; her four children, Rick of Watsonville, CA, Russ of St. George, UT, Steve of Albuquerque, and Nina of Albuquerque; and 11 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, December 4, 2002, at 2:00 p.m., at French Mortuary Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE, and on Saturday, December 7, 2002, in Mora, New Mexico.
