Simms -- D. Harper Simms, age 88, a resident of Albuquerque, NM, passed away on July 14, 2001. Harper is survived by his wife of 65 years, Effie Fite Simms; daughter, Idell Conaway of New York, NY, daughter and son-in-law, Dannelle and Dan Salmen of Rociada, NM; his brothers and sisters and their spouses, Richard R. and Cecelia Simms of Edgewood, NM, Dr. Donald Simms of Ruidoso, NM, Dr. David and Betty Lou Simms, May and Roy Denham, and Margery Miller of Albuquerque, NM; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Harper, the son of Rev. J. Denton Simms and May Harper Simms, was born in Alamogordo, NM, was educated at Park College, Missouri, New Mexico A & M, and the University of Missouri, and worked for the Dept. of Agriculture in Albuquerque and Washington, D. C. for 30 years. After retirement in 1968, he and Effie divided their time between Albuquerque, Rociada, New Mexico, and Kino Bay in Mexico. He was the author of many articles and publications in the field of soil and water conservation and as a hobby, wrote and collected in the field of Western American history. He was a longtime member of the Outdoor Writers of America. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, July 21, 2001, 10:00 a.m. at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 114 Carlisle SE. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his name to Meals on Wheels, PO Box 92614, 87199 or Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 114 Carlisle SE, 87103.
