PECK -- RALPH 1912 - 2008 Ralph B. Peck, Professor Emeritus of Foundation Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, died of congestive heart failure on February 18, 2008, at his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was born in Winnipeg, Canada, to his American parents, Orwin K and Ethel Huyck Peck on June 23, 1912. Ralph Peck earned a Civil Engineering Degree in 1934 and Doctor of Civil Engineering Degree in 1937, both from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. In 1938-39 he attended the Soil Mechanics course at Harvard University and was a laboratory assistant to Arthur Casagrande. From 1939 to 1942 Peck was an assistant subway engineer for the City of Chicago, representing Karl Terzaghi, who was a consultant on the Chicago Subway Project. He joined the University of Illinois in 1942, and was a Professor of Foundation Engineering from 1948 to 1974. Since 1974, Professor Peck was a Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois, and a consultant in geotechnical engineering. In 1948, together with Karl Terzaghi, Ralph Peck co-authored the most influential text book in geotechnical engineering, Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice. In 1953 with Walt Hanson and Tom Thornburn, Ralph Peck co-authored the widely used text book Foundation Engineering. In 1942, Dr. Peck joined the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Illinois, where he remained as a teacher and mentor until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1974. After moving to Albuquerque, Dr. Peck continued his active consulting practice which included jobs in forty-four states in the USA and twenty-eight countries on five continents. His more than one thousand consulting projects include: the rapid transit systems in Chicago, San Francisco, and Washington; the Alaskan Pipeline System; the James Bay Project in Quebec; and the Dead Sea dikes. He authored over 250 technical publications, and served as the President of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering from 1969 to 1973. In 1974, he was awarded the National Medal of Science by President Ford. A few of his many honors include the Norman Medal, The Wellington Prize, and the Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award in Education from the American Society of Engineers. His last project was the Rion-Antirion Bridge in Greece. It received the ASCE's OPAL Outstanding Civil Engineering Award for 2005 and is the only project outside the United States to be so honored. Ralph Peck married Marjorie E. Truby on June 14, 1937. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Peck (Allen) Young; and son and daughter-in-law, James (Laurie) Peck; and grandchildren, Michael Young and Maia Peck. KAGAN -- Frances Adelia Shelton Kagan, 98, passed away Saturday, February 16, 2008, in Albuquerque. Frances was born July 26, 1909 in Hubbard, Texas, to Edwin and Mary Adelia Shelton. She was a resident of Albuquerque for 50 years. Frances is preceded in death by husband, Dr. Martin Kagan; daughter, Dr. Kathleen Shelton Kagan-Hallet; and son, Tomas Martin Kagan. Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Kagan Tobias and husband, Paul, of Nashville, TN; nephews, Dr. Abbott Kagan 2nd and wife, Sheila, and Dr. John Kagan and wife, Elizabeth, all of Fort Myers, FL; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Kagan Wight and husband, Chad, of Colorado Springs, CO; son-in-law, Earl F. LERKE -- James Earl Lerke, 82, a resident of Albuquerque and a former lifelong resident of Tucumcari, passed away on Sunday, February 17, 2008. Jim was born August 9, 1925. Jim's family homesteaded in the late 1800's near Tucumcari, where he grew up. He served in the United States Navy in World War II, on the U.S.S. Enterprise, as a Radarman, 1st Class. After the war, he returned to Tucumcari and spent 39 years with the Southern Pacific Railroad as a Brakeman/Conductor. In conjunction, he spent 53 years as a member of the United Transportation Union. For over 50 years, he served as a volunteer for Everyone's Federal Credit Union, where he received the "Hall of Fame" and "Above and Beyond" awards for exemplary service. Under Jim's leadership as Chairman of the Board of Directors, the Credit Union provided EFCU members and employees with a newly renovated facility that reflects the credit union's history and continued success for the future. In addition, Jim was instrumental in the Credit Union opening a branch office in Santa Rosa, working hand in hand with his dearest friend, Andi Baum. Jim was a Life Member of Elks Lodge #1172, a Board Member of the Tucumcari Historical Research Institute, and "Wagon Master" of the Tucumsams Chapter of the Good Sam Club. He was also an accomplished wood carver with many awards and active in the Six-Shooter carving club. Jim is survived by his children, Lynn Mosher and her husband ,Jerry, Michael Lerke and his wife, Wanda, Todd Lerke and his fiancee, Delasaria Lihon; and daughter-in-law, Tina Lerke, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Michael Barnes, Darren Barnes and wife, Francine, Layla Linn, James Mosher and wife, Jessica, Miranda Lerke, Robyn Horcasitas and husband, James, Robbie Bogard, Misty Bogard, David Bogard, Jeff Jones, and Daniel Romero; great-grandchildren, Jon Paul Marquez, Renton Barnes, Cadence Mosher, and Taylor Bogard; stepsons, Bill Bogard and wife, Jan, Bruce Bogard and wife, Louella, and their families. LIVINGSTON -- Garrett James Livingston, 27, went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 18, 2008 after a long illness, with his loving family at his bedside. Garrett was born December 4, 1980 in Albuquerque to Betty and Leonard Livingston. He was a member of Rio Grande Presbyterian Church at one time and then Shepherd of the Valley Presbyterian Church. He went to Menaul School and West Mesa High School. He had great passion for reading. He was intellectually curious about science, religion, electronics, sports cars, and different cultures of the world. He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; uncles; and cousins. MASON -- Thelma "Big Momma" Mason, 92, died Tuesday, February 12, 2008. She was a resident of Albuquerque since 1993, living with her grandson Reggie and his wife, Tracey Willis. Big Momma was born on April 5, 1915 in Keatchie, LA. She was preceded in death be her husband, James Mason Sr.; her parents; and two brothers.
