SHALIT, BARRY Age 74, beloved son, brother and uncle, a life-long resident of Albuquerque passed away on December 12, 2012. He is survived by sisters, Harriet Abrams, Joselyn Schwartz and husband, Sam, and Sharon Rubenstein and husband, Dr. Al Chatfield; beloved nieces, grand nieces and one grandnephew. Barry served in the United States Army for two years, loved to travel and was a long-time member of Congregation B'nai Israel. A graveside service will be held on Monday, December 17, 2012, at 11:00 am at Fairview Memorial Park, 700 Yale Blvd, SE, 87106. MARTIN, ALMARITA A resident of Albuquerque since 1974 has passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at the age of 84. She is survived by her children, daughter, Dori Martin of Albuquerque, New Mexico; son, Ellis Martin of Los Angeles, California; grandson, Matthaniel Cowell of Los Angeles, California; granddaughter, Marina Posey; and great-granddaughter, Taysia Bradley-Posey of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Born in Brooklyn, New York to Matthew and Rose Shevlowitz on October 12, 1928, Almarita married Irwin Daniel Martin on Sept 11, 1953 in New York City. Prior to her marriage she was the head choreographer and dancer for Arthur Murray and his television show on CBS in the early 1950s. Before moving to Albuquerque, New Mexico she raised her family in Monroe and Newburgh, New York. In the 1970s, Mrs. Martin took an interest in Chinese Herbal Technology through studies at Harvard Medical School, developing 24 skin care creams, some instrumental in reducing or reversing skin degenerative conditions. She was also one of the first individuals to develop a medical 'smart-card' in the mid 1970's. In later years she entered fields of research including city planning and architectural design. Almarita Martin will rest with her late husband, Monday, December 17, 2012, 9:45 a.m., at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. SCHAFFNER, ROBERT J. Age 89, a resident of Albuquerque, died Tuesday, December 11, 2012. He is survived by his wife, Bertha May Schaffner; daughter, Elaine Schaffner of Albuquerque, NM; grandson, Christopher Dunkle and wife Danielle of Albuquerque, NM. Robert Schaffner was preceded in death by his son, Robert Jay Schaffner Jr., his father, Edwin Wilmore Schaffner, mother, Mildred Daisy Schaffner. MARTIN, PATRICIA ALIRES Age 80, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, left our Earthly world peacefully Thursday, December 13th, 2012 to rejoin her previously departed Mother, Eloisa, and Father, Pat Alires in heaven. She was born in Albuquerque, NM and retired from Sandia National Laboratory. She was one of the first volunteers at the Hispanic Cultural Center and volunteered for over ten years. She was a fan of local author Rudolfo Anaya and she passionately studied the history of New Mexico and her genealogy. She received her Bachelor's degree from St. Joseph's University of Albuquerque in business. Patricia was sister to Tom Alires and Dorothy Holland of Albuquerque. She was Mother to Ben Martin of Norfolk, VA, married to Dana of Norfolk, VA, Chris Martin of San Diego, CA, Felonis Newman of Laurel, MD, married to Kevin, Jaye Alires of Katy, TX, and Kaye Pettit of Albuquerque married to Chris. She was a loving grandmother to Crystal, Markita, Tyler, Sara, Janine, and Spiderman...... Alex. She was also survived by many nieces, nephews, and other loved ones including her special care takers, Tyler and Marie Takach. God Bless you Mother, you will be dearly missed and remembered always. MURKEN, ARLO FRANCIS Age 85, of Albuquerque, NM, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 9, 2012 at his home. Arlo was born in Story City, IA, on December 23, 1926 and earned his Bachelor of Arts from Simpson College. He was a WWII veteran who served in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge in 1946. Arlo retired as a Real Estate Broker from the Real Estate Company that he and his wife started. Arlo is survived by his sister, Norma; children, David (Patricia), Arla "Liz" (Jay) and Joseph (Cherie); and grandchildren, Elizabeth, Gabrielle and Andrew.He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; parents, Andrew and Rose; and brothers, Robert and Laverne. SCHNEIDER, PETER Age 98, longtime resident of Albuquerque, died on December 12, 2012. He is survived by his children, Peter Schneider and wife, Beth, Terry Schneider and wife, Kuo Lan-Hsin Nancy, Pamela Schneider and partner Paula Sims, Linda Lowe and husband, Roger Taft, and Marc Schneider and wife, Patti; grandchildren, Nathan Schneider, Ryan Schneider, Jennifer Schneider and husband, Roman Davis, Lauren Lowe, Ishtar Schneider, Annslee Lowe, and Audreanna Sims; great-grandchild, Phoenix Schneider; sisters-in-law, Julia Smolk and Blanche Kappel and extended family members and friends. Peter was preceded in death by the love of his life, Marion Julia Smolk Schneider; and his grandson, Aaron Schneider. Peter was born in Mountain Lake, MN on January 28, 1914 and grew up in Chicago, IL. As a young man Peter enlisted in the United States Army then entered the Army Air Corps and eventually retired from the United States Air Force in August of 1959. He proudly served during World War II and during the Korean conflict. Peter and Marion were happily married for 60 years before her death in 2005. He retired from Southern Union Gas Company after 25 years of service. He will always be remembered as a kind, honest, giving and patient man who had a great sense of humor and liked to give advice. As per Peter's wishes cremation will take place and a private family memorial service will be held. He will be laid to rest with Marion at Santa Fe National Cemetery. LINDSEY, CATHERINE (KATIE) passed away suddenly after an extended convalescence on November 4th, 2012 in Long Beach, CA. Born in 1929, in Pittsburg, Kansas, she was the daughter of L.C. and Effie McNew. Katie had many talents, excelling in math, chemistry, and Latin, and was gifted in art and sewing. In 1947 she was the only woman in her drafting class at the University of Kansas. She married in 1949 and remained in Kansas until moving to Albuquerque in 1959. While raising her family she was a substitute teacher in the Albuquerque Public School system and then went into real estate working for Century 21, also working to settle candidates off-reservation for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Moving to Long Beach in 1983 she worked in mortgage services for California Federal Savings. She became interested in massage therapy and trained at the Santa Monica Sports Institute developing a devoted following while teaching for 10 years at Wyotech of Corinthian Colleges at Long Beach. She was extremely intuitive in healing practices and helped all her who knew her. Teaching was a continuing focus in her life and she strove to help the less advantaged. Katie was also a 17 year survivor of breast cancer. Predeceased by her former husband Victor B. Lindsey, longtime companion Ted Yale, and her son Curtis B. Lindsey, she is survived by her brother Phillip (Clarene) McNew; her devoted sons Stuart (Barbara) Lindsey, Jason (Christine) Lindsey; daughters Sara (Alan) Weeks, Kathleen Hardison; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Lindsey, Samuel Hardison, Brinan, Jack, Demery and Eva Weeks, Ella and Lucas Lindsey; and many nieces and nephews. Her dear friends Robin Eastman, Diane Mcninch, and Rhetta Fleming were a constant source of comfort to her. Donations may be made in her memory to any organization that promotes healing, teaching, or helping the disadvantaged. A private service will be held in the near future for immediate family. Interment will be in her family plot located near Pittsburgh, Kansas.

METZGAR, ROBERT JAMES Age 53, of Stockton, died in his home on Sunday, December 2. Robert was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on March 2, 1959. After living much of his life in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Robert moved to Stockton in 2006. Robert had a great love of the outdoors, he was and incredibly talented artist, and had an unending sense of humor. But, most importantly, he loved his family. Robert is survived by his wife Johanna, of Stockton; his parents, Bernie and Mary Metzgar; his daughters, Shauna and fiance Jake, Rochelle and husband Simon, and Rikki Lynn and Oscar; three granddaughters, Leah, Emiliana, and Maylee J; his brother Paul and wife Sarah; two nephews and a niece, all of Albuquerque. Also, his sister Karen and Frank, of Santa Monica, California; step daughters, Teresa & husband Brett, Angela, and Johanna and husband Zach; and eight step grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 8, at 1:00 pm, at Brumback Funeral Home in Stockton. A memorial Mass will be said in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at a later date.

HOWE, DIANA HOLTERMAN (1935-2011) MEMORIAL Diana lost her fight with colon cancer on December 16, 2011 in Albuquerque, NM. She is buried with her late husband, Tommy Howe, in the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Diana was born in Espanola, NM on June 6,1935 to Leslie W. Holterman and Laura Wolf Holterman. She attended Santa Fe schools where she was active in band, choir, and chorus singing major parts in the schools musical productions. Diana graduated from Santa Fe High in 1953 and attended the University of New Mexico where, in 1957, she earned a degree in music education. She was then employed by the Bernalillo school system as a music teacher. Music, cats, plants and flowers were Diana's first loves. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law with granddaughter, Danielle Culver, of Albuquerque and a loving sister, Joana Pickens and husband Jimmy of Abilene Texas.
