LOPEZ, DELIA Delia Lopez, 89, beloved wife and mother, passed away in her home on Friday, January 30, 2015, with many of her loved ones by her side. She was born May 20, 1925 and was preceded in death by her mother, Delfinia Anaya, in 1983, and her father, Justo Garcia, in 1931. Delia, being only six-years-old with the loss of her father, was to live a life of many challenges and perils of the era. She grew up with the responsibility of taking care of the farm and crops with her brothers on her mother's land in her beloved Los Duranes, next to the river. Delia grew up in a time where there was no running water, electricity or gas in the neighborhood. Her family was one of only a handful of families who were the first settlers of Los Duranes, where no fences, paved roads or infrastructure existed. At a very early age, she joined the war effort, becoming one of the infamous women of shipbuilders known as "The Rosies," or, better known as "Rosie the Riveter." She enjoyed 69 years of marriage with her surviving husband, Jesse G. Lopez, who was and always will be the light and love of her life - her soul mate. A working mother, she had seven children, Rebecca (deceased), Jesse Jr. (partner, Patricia Salgado), Maria (husband, Larry Crosley), Eddie (wife, Christine), Joella (husband, Michael Apodaca), Jesuscita (deceased), and Juliet (husband, Ronnie Casaus). She also raised her beloved granddaughter, Kelly Murdoch (deceased), and grandson, Michael Murdoch, as her own. Delia had six brothers, who are now deceased: Fred, Alex, Euwaldo, Rudy, Gino and Connie. Her step-father, Elisceo Perea, also precedes her in death. She leaves behind many loved ones, including her three sisters, Vitalia, Josefina and Dora; her many grandchildren, including her granddaughter, Michelle, deceased, and several great-grandchildren. She recently spent many of her days babysitting Nico, who filled her days with so much happiness and joy. Our mother's stories will live in our hearts forever as we continue to share them. We will always remember how she loved us unconditionally and how she was more concerned about our well-being than her own. She was so proud of her family. When we told her we loved her, she would always respond, "But I love you more." Our hearts have never felt heavier. Los Duranes will be a changed place for all those who were fortunate to know our loving, honest, genuine mother, wife, friend and patriot. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at FRENCH - University. Please visit our online guestbook for Delia at www.FrenchFunerals.com. After graduating from High School, George joined the Air Force and spent three years in Lake Charles, LA and one year in London where he worked as an X-Ray technician. He attended college at LSU in Baton Rouge, LA and completed dental school at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI where he met his wife, Kathy. In 1967, George rejoined his sister, Elvira, and brother-in-law, Gilbert Luna, in Los Alamos where he set up his dental practice and worked for thirty-three years before retiring in 2000. He loved his patients and cherished his staff who were so loyal to him. George enjoyed exploring the beaches of Mexico, Costa Rica and the archipelagos of Panama. The last seven summers of his life he spent with Kathy in Hood River, OR., where he marveled at the beauty of the Columbia River Gorge and watched his granddaughters grow up. MARES, ERNEST ANTHONY (TONY) Ernest Anthony (Tony) Mares died January 30, at the age of 76, after complications from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He was born May 17, 1938, in Albuquerque, into a family steeped in the rich history of New Mexico and the desert Southwest. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Meyer; his son Ernesto Mares; daughter Vered Mares; daughter Maria Ehrnstein and her family, including granddaughters Lianna, Shannon, and Danielle; and brothers Chris and Michael and their families. He was preceded in death by his daughter Galit and his parents, Rebecca and Ernesto Gustavo Mares. There are no good words to sum up the life of such a brilliant and gentle soul. Tony was a true Renaissance man: professor, poet, essayist, dramatist, actor, political agitator and social activist, as well as mentor and friend. His life and legacy will continue to touch people through the lessons he taught his students, his overt dislike of the "establishment," and his extensive body of written work. His most recent work, a collection of poems about the Spanish Civil War, will be published posthumously. He wrote and performed his play, "I Returned and Saw Under the Sun," and traveled all over the state playing the role of Padre Martinez of Taos. His essays about Martinez were anthologized in the book, "Padre Martinez: New Perspectives from Taos." It is fitting that Tony's obituary be as untraditional as he was. Thus Tony leaves his family and friends with the following thoughts: "In the movie 'Casablanca,' Humphrey Bogart, proprietor of 'Rick's Cafe Americain,' tries to obtain the 'transit papers' from the Nazis that will allow his ex-girlfriend, played by Ingrid Bergman, to escape with her husband from Vichy controlled Casablanca. "Since I have never liked the sounds of 'will' or 'testament,' I prefer 'Transit Papers,' which seems to me a term more fluid and ambiguous with future possibilities. What will I transit to? A hideous urn that a merciful cat will knock over and scatter my ashes in some broken-down trailer home? Or ashes placed in a simple urn to be scattered over a beautiful site somewhere on the North American continent, a place like the Rio Grande or the Sandia Mountains? As I write this, I am fully aware that my ashes will have no say so whatsoever in what happens to them. So I leave it up to my resourceful wife and daughters who survive me to determine what to do with me while I am cooling off in some urn or container." While Tony is now in transit, both literally and figuratively, his life will be celebrated on Sunday, February 8, at the UNM Alumni Chapel at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please volunteer your time at your favorite charity or go to your local bookstore and support it fully. While the winter snows fall on the Sandias, we are left with our faces in the cold to reflect upon the many gifts Tony left with us. As he so aptly put it, "When the poem stops, you should go through the windshield."

SNOVER, SUSAN (SUSIE) Susan (Susie) Snover, born August 26, 1944 in Charlevoix, Michigan, passed away Saturday, January 31, 2015. Raised on a dairy farm, Susie developed a lifelong love of animals and a fierce independence. Her parents, Rose and Lynn Carpenter, raised strong, self-reliant children, including the youngest, Susie. Fearless, she never shied away from a challenge, whether it was drag racing for money or marrying a young Coast Guard sailor when she was only 17. This match required legal permission from her parents. Given the option of signing the papers or tossing the young man in Lake Michigan, Lynn decided to give Gary Snover a chance. A year later, they welcomed their first child, George, followed by Glenda, and finally Greg. (Susie swore the three 'G' names were coincidence.) Born with what she described as "a lemon of a body," Susie struggled with health issues throughout her life, but possessed the gift of finding something to celebrate every day. With a ready and heartfelt kindness, she put people at ease and made friends wherever she went. An expert at sewing, knitting, crocheting and quilting, Susie created masterful treasures and enduring bonds with those she loved. She is survived by her loving husband; her children, George, Glenda and her husband Karl, and Greg and his wife Stephanie; beloved grandchildren, Ross, Perryn, Paloma, and Emma; as well as her brothers, Del and Steve, and sisters, Roselynn, Fran and Sandy. A memorial will be held at 1pm on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at the Canyon Club. The family welcomes donations to Animal Humane NM in lieu of flowers.
