ACOSTA, BETTY JANE (HOHNHOLZ) Betty, age 84, has departed from her home on earth on January 6, 2015. She boarded the heaven bound train at about 11:48pm to meet her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his mom, the Blessed Virgin Mary and Joseph, foster father of Jesus. Very shortly after, she was reunited with her parents Fredrick Hohnholz and Margaret (Souza) Hohnholz, brothers Robert, Wallace and Gerard Hohnholz, and then, behold - there comes Maggie, her most beloved black Labbie dog, then Toby, then Dottie and the countless other dogs and pets ever in her care. She was born in Honolulu (Oahu), Hawaii on January 11, 1930. She was raised there knowing and living the "Aloha Spirit of the Islands." That Aloha spirit followed her all of her life. She met, and after a brief engagement, married Alex Acosta while he was serving with the US Navy based at Pearl Harbor. As a young lady, in Honolulu, she volunteered often at various N.C.O. and enlisted men's clubs at Malahia and Fort DeRussy. She loved dancing, especially jitterbugging, swimming, reading, babysitting and her beloved Catholic faith. She loved her St. Anthony. As a child she attended St. Anthony's Catholic School and Parish on Puuhali Road in Honolulu. She lovingly recalled polishing the statues in the church and always spoke of Father Hubert and Sister Patrice with great admiration and love. After marriage, she moved to Albuquerque and had her four beautiful children. She loved being a wife, a homemaker and loved raising her kids. Betty was a youthful spirit and loved having our teen friends around. Before her lower back surgeries failed her and she could still walk safely, she loved to go out dancing with her daughter Judy and their many friends. She loved the Rock-n-Roll of the 70's, 80's and 90's, and boy could she rock! Rock on mom! She loved her family and often said (as a young girl) - whenever she married, she wanted two boys and two girls and that's exactly what God gave her. She said she loved her children before they were ever born. Betty passed away at home surrounded by her two daughters, Judy and Connie and her husband, Alex. Betty is finally free of the severe pain and suffering from failed lower back surgeries, the COPD that left her breathless and the vascular disease that added to her already pain wracked body. Betty leaves behind her husband Alex, two sons and two daughters, Ron, Don Acosta and his wife Kim, Judy Ann and Connie Kay Acosta; five granddaughters, Sarah, Jordan, Madeline, Avery and Aubrey; one grandson, Zachary; four great-grandchildren, Cali Rose, K. L., Mia and Ryder; sister-in-law Verlene Hohnholz of Sacramento, CA; brother and sister-in-law Reuben and Debi Rodrigues and children Sophie, John and David; brother and sister-in-law Lee and Flora DeBaca; sister-in-law Lillian Lo Pinto; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends still living in Hawaii, Germany and the mainland. A special thanks to our loving neighbor and friend Elaine Wynne for visiting with mom and being that calming presence in our lives. Thank you to Sister Ann Michael (from St. Bernadette's) for her Sunday visits to mom for Holy Communion and the message of the Mass. A closed casket visitation will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2015 from 5:00pm to 6:00pm with a Rosary following at 6:00pm to 7:00pm and a second visitation from 7:00pm to 8:00pm, all at Riverside Funeral Home, 225 San Mateo Blvd NE. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 1900 Edith Blvd NE, 87102. Pallbearers will be Ron and Don Acosta, Reuben, John and David Rodrigues and Zachary Prince. WILLIAMS, THOMAS, DR. Thomas "Tom" McKee Williams, a native of Hobbs, New Mexico and former executive vice dean at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, died January 7, 2015. As a teenager, Dr. Williams developed his own house painting business and played center for the state championship second place football team in 1974. He famously "muffed" two snaps to his punter during a homecoming game that the Eagles with luck still won 14-6. Dr. Williams graduated from Hobbs High School and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Haverford College. He received his medical degree from the University of New Mexico. He completed his residency training in anatomic pathology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where he also served as Chief Resident. Dr. Williams was happy to get a first "real" job as Assistant Professor at age 32 at the University of Pennsylvania. He returned to the UNM School of Medicine as a faculty member in 1991. Except for a brief interlude as Chief Scientific Officer for biotechnology start-up Exagen Diagnostics, Dr. Williams spent the remainder of his career at UNM. He served as Chairman of the UNM School of Medicine Department of Pathology from 2008 to 2012. The department is among the top 10 in the United States with respect to grant funding from the National Institutes of Health. Prior to assuming his role as chair, he served as the department's executive vice chair from 2003 to 2006 and as vice chair of undergraduate medical education from 1998 to 2005. Toward the end of his career, Dr. Williams served as Executive Vice Dean and President of the Medical Practice of the School of Medicine from 2012 to 2014. Dr. Williams was an expert in immunogenetics and molecular pathology. His clinical laboratory supported kidney and bone marrow transplantation and general molecular diagnostics. His research laboratory was a leader in defining the rich complexity of the human and macaque MHC genes that control responses to transplanted organs. He published more than 100 research papers during his career, including highly cited papers in Transplantation and Molecular Genetics. One of Dr. Williams' career highlights was teaching a very large number of medical students, graduate students, residents, clinical fellows, practicing physicians and medical technologists. He taught them about medical genetics, immunogenetics and molecular pathology. He was proud of the junior faculty members he recruited to the Department of Pathology. Tom immensely enjoyed traveling. He visited five continents, every state (twice) and each of New Mexico's 33 counties! He enjoyed bicycling and made it a point to ride in every state: for example, he and wife Maggie biked 20 miles in Kansas and just a few feet in Colorado and Oklahoma at the junction of the three states. In Albuquerque, he logged more than 10,000 miles on his bike. Dr. Williams also enjoyed many visits to the island of Nantucket and to the cities of San Francisco and New York, where he often saw his nine nieces and nephew. Tom was the President of the Order of McKee, a Williams family tradition whose members include his nephew, Zeke McKee Williams, and grandnephews Hardin McKee Capps, Quentin McKee Lombard, and Henry McKee Bean. Williams' great grandfather, William McKee Riggs, could be considered the founder of the group. Zeke will be the new President of the Order. Tom was an expert carpenter whose widely-varied interests included modern art, reading, gardening, mathematics, and political discourse. He believed that life revolved around making a contribution via one's work, having relationships based on integrity, and having as many high quality and diverse experiences as possible. He leaves his wife Maggie; their sons Andrew, Alex and Henry; mother Jacquelyn Williams; siblings, William, Donna, Susie and Molly and several beloved extended family members. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, beginning at 2 p.m., with a reception to follow. The service will be held in the auditorium of the Domenici Center for Health Sciences Education, 1001 Stanford NE, in Albuquerque.
