ALBANY, JEANETTE MARIE Age 59, a life long resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, January 1, 2015. She is survived by her mother, Frances Albany; her sister, Maggie Chavez and husband, David; nieces, Suzanne Palmer and husband, Jeff, Adrienne Chavez and Stefan Neumann, and Jessica Chavez; great nieces, Alyssa and Katie Palmer, and Madi Oyer; and numerous other relatives and friends. Jeanette was preceded in death by her father, Walter Albany. She was born in 1955 in Gunnison, CO and moved to Albuquerque with her family in 1959. She graduated from Highland High School, Class of 1973. Jeanette worked for the University of New Mexico in various departments as an administrative assistant. She loved her nieces and great-nieces and family was very important to her. Jeanette also loved her dogs, especially Murphy. She was a loving daughter, sister and aunt and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. BLAN, ROSE GARCIA June 26, 1941 - January 4, 2015 Rose G. Blan, 73, went to be with our Lord on Sunday, January 4, 2015. She is preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Agripina Garcia; husband Bennie Blan; brothers and sisters Leroy Garcia, Nefi Garcia, Josephine Garcia, and Beatriz Garcia. She is survived by her children Carla Naranjo, Salvador Chavez, Magdalena Chavez, Juan Chavez, Diane Silva, Esther Martinez (John), Cecilia Aguilar (Johnny), Cindy Verlia-Bermades (Rene), Bernadette Blan, Emma Grant (Clyde), and Lisa Blan; sisters and brothers Eloisa Jimenez (James), Maria Yolanda Stripling, Cruzita Sanchez (Frank), Rita Garcia (Rick Romero), Velma Pacheco, Virginia Alires (Joe), and David Garcia (lorraine); and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. MANOLE, NIKI DASKALOS Niki Daskalos Manole, age 86, born in Monahiti, Greece, on February 2, 1928, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on January 8, 2015. Niki is preceded in death by her husband, Tom Manole both of Albuquerque, NM. Niki is survived by her daughter, Evangeline Pavlakos, her husband, Dr. Bill Pavlakos, and her son, Nick Tom Manole and his wife, Asimina. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Dr. Athanasios Manole M.D., Nectarios Pavlakos, Dr. Rose Pavlakos, and Niki Ninopoulos and her husband, Billy as well as her siblings Dimitrios Daskalopoulos and Hrisanthi Missios of Greece. Chris and Milly Daskalos, Petros and Soula Daskalos of Albuquerque and many more loving cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and family members. Niki grew up in Monahiti, Greece and immigrated to Las Vegas, New Mexico on September 21, 1951. She started a family with her mail order husband from her hometown in Greece. Tom Manole arrived in Las Vegas, NM and they were married on April 24, 1955. They both arrived in America with very little but with relentless hard work and love they went on to become successful business owners in downtown Albuquerque. Through all their success their main priority always remained family. Niki was a devoted wife, mother but most of all a proud and loving grandmother to her four grandchildren. The legacy her and her husband left behind will remain forever in the hearts of those they touched. Many downtowners have fond memories of Niki as she spent so many years doing what she loved most, working at Nick's restaurant at 4th and Central. Pallbearers will be: Her grandsons, Dr. Athanasios Manole, Nectarios Pavlakos, Billy Ninopoulos and Dom Romero, her Godson, Michael Stevens, her nephews George Daskalos, Jimmy Daskalos and Jason Daskalos, and her wonderful neighbor, Bill Kitsos. Memorial Trisagion service will be held on Sunday, January 11, 2015, 7:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Lomas. MARTINEZ, TERESA RAFAELA PADILLA age 87, born in Los Padillas, New Mexico to Rafael and Demesia Padilla, passed away peacefully in her childhood home on Monday, January 5, 2015. Teresa was a lifelong New Mexico Educator, beginning her teaching career at the elementary level in San Rafael, New Mexico. She later taught for over twenty years in the Los Lunas Public Schools and loved helping children learn. Teresa became an avid traveler, when upon graduation from Albuquerque High School, Class of 1945,she visited Niagara Falls and New York City with her sisters. Throughout her later years, Teresa traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Holy Land, Mexico and the United States. She loved meeting new people from around the world and hearing about their lives. Teresa received a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1948 from the Catholic Teachers College of New Mexico, later known as the University of Albuqueque. Teresa was a devoted, lifetime member of the Catholic Church and a member of the Legion of Mary, serving in a leadership role throughout her tenure, and a member of the People's Eucharistic League. Teresa was also involved as a Lay Minister with Church of the Ascension, her home parish. She relished the opportunity to serve the church in this capacity. Teresa is survived by a daughter, Dr. Berlinda Martinez-Gallegos and husband, Gilbert of Tega Cay, South Carolina; son Richard Martinez and wife, Gerri; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; sisters in law, Predicanda Padilla, Lina Padilla, Alma Martinez, and Stella Ortega; brother in law, Jose Aramante Martinez Jr.; numerous nieces, and nephews, including State Senator Michael Padilla, New Mexico Cabinet Secretary of Taxation and Revenue, Demesia Padilla, and former Secretary of State, Clara Padilla-Andrews; and a host of friends. Teresa was preceded in death by her husband, Ricardo Martinez; her son, Rafael (Ralph) Martinez; parents, Rafael and Demesia Padilla; sisters, Andrea Chavez, Cleotilde (Cleo) Garcia, and Celestina Lopez; brothers, Julian, Ralph, Carmel, and Desiderio (Phil) Padilla. Visitation will be Friday, January 9, 2015 at Church of the Ascension, 2150 Raymac SW from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. by the Legion of Mary. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Church of the Ascension, Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Los Padillas Cemetery. MEDFORD, VERNIE VELLIA Vellia Medford, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, passed away peaceful on December 28, 2014 at the age of 90. She loved life and would always be seen with a smile on her face. She was born to Bill and Florence Hayes on July 10, 1924 in Nora Springs, Iowa. Vernie was a member of the Mason City High School basketball team. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Leroy (Roy) Vellia 1973 and Leroy (Lee) Medford 1998. It was while Vernie was on active duty during World War II that she met both her husbands. Vernie was extremely proud of her military service. From August 1944 to December 1945 she served in the Women's Army Air Corps and was discharged with the rank of E-3. During her time in the WAC she received numerous awards and medals, including a personal letter from President Truman. During her service time she was stationed at the 90th Army Air Force BU at Grenier Field, New Hampshire, at Selfridge Field, Michigan and at Chanute Field, Illinois. It was at Chanute Field that she received her training as a teletype operator. Sgt Roy Vellia was her instructor. After receiving her diploma Vernie worked in the message center. She and Lee Medford ran the relay room in the Message Center. Their duties included sending and receiving control tower messages from the United States and overseas. After Lee's discharge she ran the Relay Room and would have to read the messages and ensure they were routed correctly. Vernie was a charter member of the Women in Military Memorial Foundation. Vernie was voracious reader until macular degeneration robbed her of her eyesight. At the beginning of each year she would reread all of her classic collection, her favorite being "Robinson Crusoe" by Daniel Defoe and "The Beauty of Death" byKahlil Gibran. She loved her casino visits. Vernie leaves behind many cherished craft and painting projects. She was a jack of all trades and did everything both inside and outside the home. Vernie is survived by her daughter Terry Vellia and a special daughter-in-law Anita Landis-Disney, a Mom-Mom to Tammy Medford Hanson and David Medford, Jean Carty her friend she met over 70 years ago during their military service and a special friend Rita Rodriguez. Vernie loved and leaves behind her numerous four legged friends. Cremation has taken place at Gabaldon Mortuary, 1000 Old Coors Drive SW. A celebration of Vernie's life will be held at a future date. Vernie has been a Rio Grande Zoo parent for over 30 years, therefore in lieu of flowers Terry wishes donations be made to the zoo for the care and feeding of the tortoises. SALAZAR, JUSTINE "J" BIANCA October 12, 1988 Justine passed away suddenly. She is survived by her father, Steven "Bro" Salazar; Maggie; her brother, Estevan; and her sisters, Alysha, Angelita, and Rosalinda. She is also survived by her four children: Alyssa, Santos, Tony and Aliyah. Justine was predeceased by her mother, Beatrice, and both maternal and paternal grandparents. She touched everyone's heart that she crossed and will be greatly missed. Funeral Rosary will be held on Saturday, noon at Therese Little Flower Catholic Church, 300 Mildred NW. SERRANO, ANGELA ANGELA G. SERRANO age 77 of Santa Rosa, New Mexico, was called home by our savior to ease her pain and suffering so that she may sing with the Angels to smile upon her family and friends comforting us wrapped in her angels wings. She was born to Lucio Gerhardt and Selina Cepriana Aragon on April 14, 1937 in Yeso, New Mexico where she was also raised. She was met by Charles H. Serrano and the two were quickly overcome with affection for each other. Charles and Angela married on June 23, 1952 and made their home in Santa Rosa. Angie was a homemaker raising 10 children then loving and caring for countless grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. She was a loving caring person to her husband and family including in-laws, nephews, nieces, friends, neighbors and all she met greeting everyone with an adoring smile a hug a kiss and compassion. With that love and compassion she became a Den Mother with the local Cub Scouts guiding local children. She became a Catechism Teacher for the St Rose of Lima Parish teaching the message, liturgy, worship, mission and service of the Catholic Faith. She then began to share with us her love of music, becoming a part of a parish choir, piercing us with her beautiful voice. Continuing her kindness and compassion, through her adoration of her faith she was called to join the Catholic Daughters of the Americas where she served alongside many dear friends in the mission of spreading Unity and Charity to people and families in the community. Angie's love of flowers and gardening brought her to join the Santa Rosa Garden Club District 3 of the New Mexico Garden Clubs where she served as president helping plan and execute many of the organizations community and State activities, again with many dear and loving friends. She enjoyed her family and friends spoiling and comforting them with her cooking, baking, knitting and crocheting countless keepsake items, and the times she found to relax she painted and read to unwind. Beyond housekeeping she found time to enter the workforce in Santa Rosa where she cemented many friendships while employed at the First National Bank, the Truckstops of America and the Super 8 Motel. Angela was preceded in death by her father and mother, her son Albert S. Serrano and grandson Francisco Delgado, loving in-laws, nephews and nieces. She leaves her husband of 62 years Charles H. Serrano; daughter Bertille and her husband Mark Delgado of Albuquerque, NM; daughter Charlene Urban of Santa Fe NM; daughter Darlene and her husband Leroy Bonney of Santa Rosa, NM; son Enrico Serrano and his wife Lucille of Milagro, NM; son Ferrante Joe Serrano and his wife Barbara of Santa Rosa, NM; daughter Gwendolyn Serrano of Santa Rosa, NM; son Hilario Serrano and his wife Lori of Taos, NM; son Ian John Serrano and his wife Yolanda of Santa Rosa, NM; son Jorge Serrano and his wife Michelle of Santa Rosa, NM; grandson and son of Albert, Jason Serrano and his wife Jeatonne of Edgewood, NM. She was blessed with just over 90 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grand children. Serving as pallbearers are Carlos Delgado, Andres Urban, Roy Bonney, James Sanchez, Sam Serrano, Enrique Sena, Paul Serrano, Mario Serrano and Jared Serrano. A Rosary was recited at 6pm Friday, January 9th by the Catholic Daughters at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church is Santa Rosa, NM. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am Saturday, January 10th at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Santa Rosa with Father Sotero A. Sena officiating. SHOEMAKER, SHIRLEY OVERKAMP Age 83, a resident of Tijeras, NM, passed away 12-28-2014. She is survived by her children, Mike (Cheryl) Overkamp, Dallas, NC, Denise (Jeff) Johnson, Tijeras, NM, Melissa Cosgrove, Melbourne, FL, Kevin Overkamp, Grant, MI, and Martin Overkamp, Tijeras, NM; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; her brother Harvey Harris of Kansas City, MO; many nieces and nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, William Shoemaker, daughter, Patricia Wright, and sister, Roberta Kidd. Shirley was a wonderful, strong, kind woman. She was a world traveler as well, having lived in Saudi Arabia and South America. She will be laid to rest in Flora, MS. SWING, CARLL CHARLES Carll C. Swing, passed away suddenly on January 3, 2015. Carll was born August 20, 1952 in Syracuse, NY to the late Rev. and Mrs. Charles D. Swing. Carll was a long time resident of Albuquerque and was employed by ABQ RIDE. TRATECHAUD, MARY LYNN Age 75, resident of Albuquerque for 67 years, died Monday, January 5, 2015. She is survived by daughters Susan Kurland of Los Angeles, CA, and Linda Doezema, of Albuquerque, NM; her son-in-law David Doezema; her grandchildren Rebecca, Jonathan, and Jessica Kurland; Adam, Niko, and Mieke Doezema; her sister Adele Billingsley of Boise, ID; her nephews and niece Tracy and Aaron Billingsley, and Marika and Reeves Bower. She was preceded in death by her parents Ralph Bower and Marguerite Koons, her god-parents Maria and Simplicio Cansino, her brother Roland Bower, and her son-in-law Pierre Kurland. Her family moved to Albuquerque in 1947 where she attended St. Vincent's Academy, graduated from Albuquerque High in 1957 and UNM in 1975. Mary Lynn worked in the DA's office as a probation councilor for her entire career, volunteered at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, and practiced Tai Chi at the Chinese Cultural Center. She died after a long battle with chronic illness, cared for by her loving family, friends, caretakers, and her fabulous dog Zoe. Services will be held at St. Michaels All Angles Episcopal Church Monday, January 12, 2015 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Food Pantry 345-8147.
