ATKINS, JOE was born on August 28, 1920 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Hazel and Hugh Atkins and died on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at his home, surrounded by loving family and friends. He graduated from Stillwater Oklahoma High School where he was a member of the State Championship Football Team in 1938. He was attending Oklahoma State University, studying Animal Science when World War II began. As many young men of the generation did, Joe joined the Marines and was assigned to the 1st Marines, 1st Division, 1st Regiment. Joe was wounded during the assault on Peleliu Island and was wounded a second time during the occupation of Okinawa. After the war, Joe moved to Levelland and was a roughneck in the oil fields of West Texas. He met Beth O'Neil and they were married on November 5, 1949. They moved to Hall County, Texas where Joe cowboyed and managed Bobcat Crossing Camp on the Mill Iron Ranch. On the day after Thanksgiving in 1950, they moved to Roy, New Mexico and began ranching in the Yates, New Mexico community. In 1974, Joe and Beth bought a ranch near Richland, Missouri. They ranched in Missouri for 5 years before retiring to their farming interests in Lamb and Hale County, Texas. Joe took great pleasure in working with the young people in all the communities he lived. He started and endowed the Ogle Hopkins Wrestling Endowment at the University of Missouri to provide scholarships for members of the University of Missouri Wrestling Team. Joe was instrumental in providing quality horses to the Oklahoma State University Equine Department and horse farm for the benefit of the students. He also took great interest in the Harding County Fair and bought 4-H animals at the livestock sale for decades to support the young people in the area. Joe was a member of numerous organizations over the years which included; New Mexico Mounted Patrol, New Mexico Cattlegrowers, AQHA, New Mexico Livestock Association, Oklahoma State University Foundation and Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock, Texas. Joe liked nothing better than riding a good horse, working cattle with his children and neighbors. Joe loved his family, his community and his country. All-in-all, his was a life well lived. In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by a sister; Lucille Marquis and a baby brother. Joe is survived by his wife of 65 years Beth O'Neil Atkins of Cotton Center, Texas; a daughter Lenora Neil Atkins of Roy and Albuquerque, New Mexico; a son Hugh Atkins of Phoenix, Arizona. Also surviving are nephews Rev. Bill Marquis and his wife Suzi of Tustin, California and Dave Marquis and his wife Diane of Dallas, Texas; and other relatives and many friends. The family extends it's heartfelt gratitude to Joe's friend and caretaker, Leonora Garza of Cotton Center, Texas, for her devotion, sense of humor and kindness. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at the First Baptist Church in Roy, New Mexico with Joe's nephew, Rev. Bill Marquis of Tustin, California, officiating. Burial will follow at Ute Creek Canyon on the family ranch. Arrangements are under the direction of Hass Funeral Directors of Clayton. CARROLL, MARIA ISABEL Maria Isabel Carroll, 80, our beloved Mother passed away on December 30, 2014. Isabel was born on September 4, 1934 in Albuquerque, New Mexico to the late Filiberto and Juanita Baca. A long-time resident of the Albuquerque area, she worked for the State of New Mexico Health Department until her retirement. Isabel loved spending time with her family, traveling, and going to plays. She was a loving and caring person, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who was always thinking of others first. Her devotion to family and unwavering faith in God supported her through her struggles and ultimately gave her peace. She loved her family with all her heart. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her. Isabel is survived by her sister, Lucy Clark; brother, Misais Baca; four sons, Jim Satches, Tom Larkey, Robert Carroll, and Billy Carroll; three daughters, Dorothy Carroll, Lydia Linville, and Liz Koski; nieces, Carol Angel, Julie Sauvageau; nephew, Paul Angel. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Billy Carroll; son, Ricky Satches; daughter, Jennie Lind and grandson, Joseph Lind. ENCINIAS, MICHAEL E. Age 55, was born on August 18, 1959 in Las Vegas, NM and passed away on Monday, December 29, 2014 in Albuquerque, NM. Mike enjoyed traveling, concerts, WWE, spending time with his grandchildren and family. He was a devoted Catholic, CDL truck driver and a Navy Veteran of four years. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Bernardino B. Encinias. He is survived by his daughters, Felicia Encinias (Michael), Nadine Encinias (Judah); one grandson, Diego; three granddaughters, Avea, Arianna and Sophia; mother, Alice Encinias; best friend, Diane Encinias; two sisters, Sylvia Abeyta and Antonia Romero; three brothers, Tomas Encinias(Janette), Bernardino Encinias, Jr., and Rudy Encinias; one nephew, Tony Abeyta, Jr.; five nieces, Michelle Richards, Holly Encinias, Alicia Romero, Ashley Encinias and Sonya Sisneros; several great nieces and nephews as well as many other family members and friends who loved and will miss him. GARCIA, IRENE Age 89, a life-long resident of Tijeras, NM passed away Wednesday, December 31, 2014. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Pablo Garcia; three sons and one daughter, Rey Garcia and wife, Viola, of Tijeras, Betty Garcia and husband, Felix, of Tijeras, Paul Garcia and wife, Anne, of Albuquerque and Greg Garcia of Albuquerque; nine grand kids; 12 great grand-kids; two great-great grand-kids; many nieces and nephews; and numerous other relatives and friends. She was very loved by her brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, and her best friend, Betty Martinez. Irene was born to the late Raymundo and Lugarita Garcia and was preceded in death by her brother, Benny Garcia; and her grandson, Luis Garcia. She was retired from Albuquerque Public Schools where she worked at A. Montoya and Roosevelt schools in Tijeras. Irene was very faithful to her church, attending Rosary and Mass all of her life and after she retired, every day for 19 years, making trips twice a year to the Mother Cabrini Shrine in Golden, CO, and once a year to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Lubbock, TX. She lived a long loved-filled life. Irene was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. A Rosary will be held Monday, January 5, 2015, 7:00 p.m. at Holy Child Catholic Church, 19 Camino del Santo Nino, Tijeras, NM 87059. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Tuesday, January 6, 2015, 10:00 a.m. at Holy Child Catholic Church, with interment to follow at Tijeras Cemetery. MARTINEZ, ESTELLA Estella U. Martinez, age 89, passed away peacefully with her husband Joe by her side on January 3, at the Guadalupe County Hospital in Santa Rosa. Stella was born on January 25, 1925 in Colonias, NM to the home of Federico and Maria Modesta (Olivas) Ulibarri. She was reared and attended schools in Colonias and Santa Rosa. She Married Jose Alcario Martinez on June 10, 1959 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Santa Rosa. Stella worked as a waitress in several restaurants and also as a receptionist for an Optometrist until she retired in 2005. She and her husband Joe were faithful members of St. Rose of Lima Parish where they both served on the Choirand Eucharistic Ministers for the shut ins, she was a member of the St. Anne's Sodality, St. Rose Altar Society, Sisters of St. Joseph Associate and Las Hijas de Maria as well as being involved in the Cursillo Movement. She enjoyed attending Bible Classes with the Sisters of St. Joseph, cooking, making tamales and empanadas during the holidays, baking homemade bread and was very popular for her casseroles. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Isabel Ulibarri, Mela (Ulibarri) Bonney, her brothers Ramon Ulibarri and Jose C. Ulibarri. Survivors include her devoted husband Jose A. Martinez of Santa Rosa, her sister Maria Magdalena Romero of Albuquerque and her brother Frank Eloy Ulibarri and wife Viola of Albuquerque. Rosary services will be held on Tuesday, January 6, at 10:00 AM from St. Rose of Lima Church. Mass of Christian Burial will follow the rosary with Father Sotero A. Sena officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Serving as Pallbearers will be Paul Griego, Javier Urban, Patrick Martinez, Gilbert Ulibarri, Tony Ulibarri, Phillip Romero, Curt Flores, Gilbert Campos, Juliana Ortiz and Annalisa Ortiz. Lisa was welcomed home to Heaven after fighting a long battle with brain cancer is now waltzing across Texas. Lisa was a Rio Grande HS graduate, who proudly served in the US Navy for 6 years. She is survived by her loving husband Robert G. McFarland,; daughter Haleigh L. McFarland of Austin, TX; her son Glenn D. Mitchell USAF, his wife Melanie, granddaughter Lorelei of MO and her daughter Tracey R. Mitchell Higginbotham, her husband Jeremy, grandchildren Levi and Ellie of MO. She is also survived by her mother-in-Law Sondra McFarland; her sister-in-law Shannon McFarland Smith and family of Cibola, TX; her parents Roy and Sally Garland of Alb., N.M.; her twin sister Allie R. Smith, her husband Mike Smith, their daughters Morgan and Laycee Smith of Belen, N.M.; her brother Roy J. Garland, his wife Wendy, their sons Quentin & J.T., and their daughter Rylee Garland of Washington State, along with many extended family and friends. A memorial service is planned for a later date. SWALWELL, RUTH GADDIS passed away peacefully in her sleep, at the age of 94, on December 30th 2014. She was born in Cincinnati Ohio, on April 16th 1920. She was preceded in death by her husband Irving Swalwell, her three brothers Vincent, Alfred, and Paul, her two sisters Wilma and Jeanne and one grandchild, Cathy Poppino. She is survived by her four children Winona Poppino, Chris Swalwell, Sandra Swalwell, and Matt Swalwell; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. She had been an Albuquerque resident for the last 45 years. Her wishes were to be cremated, and had requested that no service be held, which the family will respect.

WOOD, JAMES O. James O. Wood, 82, passed away at his home in Rio Rancho, NM on Friday, December 26, 2014. He was born on February 8, 1932 to Clarence Wood and Ola Smithers Wood in Tucumcari, NM. He is survived by his wife of 60 an a half years, Patricia "Patsy" Wood; sons David Wood and wife, Maria and Michael Wood and wife, Diane; daughter-in-law, Julie Wood Ferron and her husband, Craig; grandchildren, David, Stacie, Rodney, Timothy, Jimmie and wife, Niki, and Adam; great-granddaughter, Rylie; brother, Reverend Joel Wood and wife, Virginia along with extended family members and lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his youngest son, Patrick; his parents; brothers, Elmer and Glen, and sister, Ruth. Jim attended Tucumcari High School, class of 1951. He married Patsy McNally on May 22, 1954. In his spare time Jim enjoyed a game of pool or an afternoon of fishing, but his greatest love was spending time with his family. Cremation will take place.
