BALCOMB, EDWARD VAIL Edward Vail Balcomb, a hero of the Greatest Generation, was born August 9, 1923 and died at age 90 on December 8, 2013. A true native of Albuquerque, he was delivered in the "Lying In Home" at the corner of High and Coal by Katharine Wise Johnson Balcomb and Kenneth Chester Balcomb. The second of four sons, Ed attended University Heights Elementary, Lincoln Junior High, Albuquerque High and the University of New Mexico. In 1941, he joined the Naval ROTC, was commissioned in 1943, and served with the Amphibious Fleet during the invasion of the Philippines. He was the skipper of a landing craft, with two officers and twelve men. He made the landings at Layte Gulf in the Ninth Wave and later joined in the invasion of Cebu Island, offloading an artillery group. After the war, Ed returned to UNM on the GI Bill and earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1948. In 1946, while helping the freshman class register he met his wife Margaret (Peggy) Calvin whom he married on August 6, 1950. After college, he started his varied career at Sandia Base writing a history of the Fat Boy atomic bomb. Later, he designed heavy hauling equipment and machinery for Miller and Smith Manufacturing CO., and tried his hand selling insurance for Ohio National. In 1960 he obtained his general contractor license and for 40 years built custom homes and sold real estate in Dietz Farms, the North Valley and Corrales. In retirement, he found his dream job driving a courtesy van for University Volkswagen where he entertained passengers with his encyclopedic knowledge of New Mexico. All his life, Edward was a public servant. In 1956, he was elected to the Bernalillo County Commission and served four terms, three as chairman. During his tenure, the commission obtained funding for the first addition to the Bernalillo County Indian Hospital, which became Bernalillo County Medical Center and later UNMH. During his term, UNMH was designated a teaching hospital. In 1968, he was a congressional candidate for the US House of Representatives and in 1970, he was a Republican candidate for New Mexico governor. It was during his statewide campaigns that he traveled hundreds of miles through New Mexico amassing his vast knowledge of state history, geography and people. He served on the Central New Mexico Council of Governments and was chair for three years. Ed was a devoted family man and lived life to the fullest. In 1952, his first daughter Teresa Vail Balcomb was born, followed by daughter Charlotte Victoria Balcomb. For more than twenty years the family rafted rivers in New Mexico, Colorado, Idaho and Utah. Under his initiative he paddled then-Secretary of the Interior Manual Lujan and his wife Jeannie down the Chama River. Three weeks later portions of the Chama were designated as a wild and scenic river and the Abuiqui dam fill limits were established. He and Peggy started skiing when there was just a rope tow at Sandia Peak and Taos Ski Valley was accessible by a T-Bar. He is survived by his daughters, Teresa Vail Balcomb, MD and Charlotte Balcomb Lane; his sons-in-law, James Tryon, MD and Peter Lane; grandchildren Elyce Tryon Sheehan and husband Sean Sheehan; Connor Boyle Tryon, MD and wife Carolina Ponce, MD; Ansel Edward Lane and Spencer Vail Lane; he is also survived by younger brothers Robert Samuel Balcomb of Silverdale, WA and John Douglas Balcomb and his wife Cecelia of Fountain Hills, AZ. Ed was preceded in death by his eldest brother Kenneth Chester Balcomb II (Blue) and in 2006, by his wife of 56 years, Peggy, who went ahead to groom the slopes for their next adventure. Ed's family would like to thank those who befriended him during his last years: The wonderful librarians of the Bosque Farms Public Library, Marianne Lynch, Amanda Vigil and Wyn Sanchez, for supplying him with books aplenty; Yvonne Poitras, his kind, gentle caregiver who came as an answer to our prayers; and Tanya and Cindy of Vista Care Hospice for their humor and expertise when they were most needed. And we can't forget the Bosque Farms "Ole Liars Club" of Walter Shoemaker, George Hobbes, Mike Buvinghauson, Carl Allen, Butch Medor and Phil Alexander who for six years welcomed Ed into their coffee and breakfast musings. Per Ed's wishes there will be no services. Cremation arrangements by Direct Funeral Services of Albuquerque. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Edward's name to St. Anthony's Alliance, 4123 Montgomery Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87109

DAVIDSON, JOAN BERNISE Beautiful, Kind, Classy, Intelligent, Funny, beloved mother, grandmother, Aunt, sister and cherished wife of 63 years, died Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 83. She is survived by her loving husband Clarence "Dave" A Davidson; her beloved children to whom she dedicated every fiber of her being, Margaret Ellen Carbonatta and husband Alain of Colundra, QLD; Janie Daniels and husband, Michael of Tijeras, NM; John C. Davidson and partner, Joan Irey of Albuquerque, NM; Mary Beth Maloy and husband, Dion Patrick of Albuquerque, NM; Christi M. Mayer and husband, Randy of Albuquerque, NM; Carol Lee Andersen and husband, Kevin of Houston, TX. Joan took exceptional delight in all of her grandchildren, Katharine Gilmore Mosley, David Gilmore, Steven Gilmore, JT Daniels, Kelly Klein, Kyle Mayer, Ryan Mayer, Katelyn Maloy, Lindsey Maloy, Taylor Andersen, Zachary Andersen, Alicia Irwin, Brandi Garner and Alisha and her four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Davidson was preceded in death by her parents, John and Margret Stockman of Long Island New York where Joan was raised and lived until she married Dave at 22 years of age whilst he served in the Navy. Joan was very proud of her education, receiving a double degree in Business and English from Adelphi, blazing a trail as one of the first women to achieve such a liberal degree in the 1940's. She truly loved learning and delighted in her children and grandchildren opening their minds through education, either formal or self-directed through living life. She sat with all six of her children night after night ensuring no shortcuts were taken and her kids excelled at the peril of her own sleep. Her children sent their children back to her, ensuring the legacy of her rigor was not missed on the next generation. Only Joan could excel at growing camellias, rare poppies along with every type of flower, plant or bush in between. The harsh environment was no match for her green thumb, she delighted in the birds in her back yard and they delighted in her glorious garden. Year after year the hummingbirds were guided to her vibrant, fragrant masterpiece in addition to her neighbors, to witness the oasis she annually created in the desert of New Mexico. Joan, lived life so fully with joy, tenderness and sprit; among other elements marking her life, were making sumptuous Christmas treats with her children, great pride in living within her means, she delighted in new words, her dictionary always close at hand to incorporate a fabulous new word into her repertoire. Competitive cards brought out the sprit in her, the more competitive the better, it was this great fight in her that kept her on this earth longer then the medical profession could ever fathom. As an avid lifelong learner, every book fiction or non-fiction would be absorbed in its entirety in a day or two. Her love of books out weighed her utter distaste for new technology and you could always find her with her nose squarely in a new book on her kindle. Entrenched in our memory will be falling to sleep listening to her playing piano, sometime alone, sometimes with her children on their chosen instrument, she ensured all her kids were indoctrinated into the arts she loved so deeply and compromised doing things for herself so her kids were enriched. Joan was a master at the sewing machine, her five daughters could not wait to see what would appear, from the high school students through to her toddlers baby doll transcending one and half decades, no piece of fabric was wasted, all of her kids impeccably dressed. Her passion for travel and new cultures took her around the world more than once, she did not stop when she travelled, every nuance of new culture absorbed, no moment wasted, language, food, wine and community, she experienced it all through living it fully. Joan loved her friends completely and was always there to listen; she never forgot a birthday, a significant moment or kind words of support in a time of need. She was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Community and lived a deeply spiritual life of faith and dedication. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, December 20, 2013, 10:00 a.m. at FRENCH - Lomas. Her Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, December 21, 2013, 1:00 p.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 12500 Carmel Ave NE. Interment will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery. DURBIN, LARRY AL August 28, 1955 - December 4, 2013 Born in Amarillo, died in Albuquerque. Larry would want you to know he died because he insisted on living hard regardless of the outcome. Oh, and of course, doctors are full of it. As he lived, he died, stubborn and relentless until the end. Fortunately these were not Larry's only talents. Foodie, father and dreamer, Larry lived his life by his own rules. Not to say he was a law breaker, no, Larry maintained characteristics from his military background and southern upbringing throughout his life. He simply made his life the way he needed it to be, with the freedom and space he desired. He loved food, good food. At his poorest hours you could be sure to find Brie, artichokes, and Sumatra in his fridge. He loved nothing more than filet mignon, hollandaise and Yorkshire pudding, with pepper -corns and Himalayan salt on the side. Larry was loyal to his families history and spent hours cultivating the family tree. He picked up Scuba diving with no fear, and when he wanted his balloon pilot's license he went out and got it. He had a fascination with wild animals, small wild animals that is, a sort of boyish wonderment of their simple, instinctual lives. Larry had pigeons in North Carolina and families of raccoons, frogs, and squirrels in Georgia. Spotting a Road Runner in New Mexico would truly make his day. He was a phenomenal gift wrapper, hash brown maker, and fire starter. Airplanes were his true love and he was never happier than when he was fixing one up. He could hear an engine above and know exactly what was flying. He never tired of boasting of his avionic knowledge or the time he worked on John Travolta's jet, one of the highlights of his career. Larry was a master of technology as well. He could and with no encouragement talk for hours about the latest Microsoft invention. Somehow he could make even the most technologically challenged person interested in Bill Gates. Whether he was feeding his eel or nearly drowning in the Puget Sound when his scuba tube became tangled, Larry lived everyday with a joy and serenity that was enviable. He was a truly gifted photographer; whether it be an old dirt road or a self portrait, you felt a depth and always a sadness when looking at his work. He took what others would call hobbies, nurtured them with a passion and commitment that was inspiring to those who knew him. He also had a life long commitment to wearing white socks with Teva's. He felt strongly that the sock sandal combination was poorly misjudged. Larry had a long love affair with Vegemite, bourbon, Star Trek, Ansel Adams and Carlos Castaneda. He was a self educated man who knew a little about everything and a lot about many things, he thrived on conversation, making friends wherever he went. He despised cats, thieves and liars, in that order, although he would give anyone of those the shirt off his back. He was a kind, patient, generous and loving man who sadly wrestled with demons who in the end won. He has joined his mother and father, Anita and Phillip Durbin and left behind his daughter Claire, son-in-law Daniel and grandchildren; Stella, Hyde, Jack and Jude. Larry will be thought of everyday and missed and loved always. "You're just left with yourself all the time, whatever you do anyway. You've got to get down to your own God in your own temple. It's all down to you mate." -John Lennon Larry is to be laid to rest in the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Services to be held at a later date.

EBEL, MARION JANE Age 85, passed away Thursday, December 12, 2013. She was born July 1, 1928 in Rapid City, SD to Martha and Clair Magness. Her family moved to Monte Vista, CO where she graduated from high school in 1946. She married Clayton Ebel in 1947 and they moved to Durango, CO where they raised their family. In 1990, they retired to Yuma, AZ. Marion embodied the value of hard work and resilience. In her early forties, she borrowed money from her brother so she could go to school to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Her LPN degree led to a career at Mercy Medical Center that lasted over 20 years. During her years at Mercy she worked in surgery, ran two departments, earned an employee of the year award, and retired as the Assistant Director of Materials Management. Her years of devotion to this art produced elegant quilts with hand stitched quilting so precise it was seamless. She had one passion greater than quilting, her grandchildren. At the end of her life she was still recalling stories of her grandchildren and the joy they brought to her life. HAMMETT-LAIR, GARY WAYNE Our beloved Gary, 63, died on Tuesday, December, 4, 2013. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mercedes, step-father, James Tolbert and his brother, Larry Lair. He is survived by many family members, the closest are: Lora Tolbert Woodward and Rick Woodward, sister and brother-in law of Indianapolis, IN; and the brother of his heart, Louis T. Ascherman of Wilmette, IL. Most significantly, Gary is survived by his only love of 30 years, his soul-mate, his truest fan and his spouse of 14 weeks Douglas M. Hammett-Lair. Gary was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in Germany as a linguist. He had a degree in Computer Programming and worked as a Systems Program Analyst for CNA Insurance. These just describe the vocational aspects of Gary's life; the true nature of Gary was his passion to learn everything about life and all things in the world. Generally a private man, he embraced every aspect of life with excitement and delight. From the smallest bonsai tree, to the nether reaches of the universe through astronomy; from music and musical theatre, to Swarovski crystal; Gary soaked up knowledge passionately seeking out information that would keep his mind active, his days busy and his life filled. And none was lived with greater adoration than the love he and Doug shared. Despite a deeply held sense of privacy, Gary's deepest passion was evident on his face every time he looked at Doug. This love transcended his moment of death. A small gathering will be held January 18th at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Rio Rancho. In lieu of flowers, please send any remembrance in the name of Gary Hammett-Lair to Creede Repertory Theatre, P.O. Box 269, Creede, CO 81130

He graduated from Clifton High school in Clifton, Arizona and at the age of 17 joined the United States Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Hancock on the flight deck from 1944 through 1945 in some of the worst battles in the South China Sea and South Pacific of which he seldom spoke of and only in a generic manner. He did show us recently a small piece of a Kamikaze that hit the flight deck of the ship. He graduated from the University of Arizona in Pharmacy and worked in the copper mines of Phelps Dodge in Morenci, Az. He graduated from University of Missouri Kansas City School of Dentistry first in his class with top honors. He practiced general Dentistry in Morenci, Az. and Safford, Az. for ten years and charged $5.00 for a filling and $2.00 for an extraction. Price conscious patients chose the $2.00 option. He graduated from Baylor College of Orthodontics in Dallas, Texas in 1966 and practiced in Albuquerque, NM, Gallup, NM and Grants NM. He was a licensed pilot and combined his love of flying with his passion for Orthodontics. He flew his plane from Albuquerque to Gallup for 26 years earning him the nicknames "Doc Peay" and "The Flying Orthodontist." Dr. Peay literally put "smiles" on thousands of patients' faces. He also served on the Cleft Palate team treating patients with severe palate deformities. He had a passion for airplanes and owned many during his lifetime. He built a helicopter but Darla refused to let him fly it. He retired at the age of 71 and spent time restoring his beloved Mooney Mite airplane from top to bottom. He was a lifelong member of the Quiet Birdmen, a fraternity of pilots enjoying years of shared stories, jokes and camaraderie. He was an avid collector of Model-A's, owning nearly every model at one point or another. He was unpretentious and had a quick wit and dry sense of humor, always willing to lend a hand. He grew up during the depression and had a penchant for saving, fixing and tinkering with all things mechanical. He touched countless lives with his kindness and was admired and respected by his family, many friends, former employees, patients and business associates. Surrounded by his loved ones, he died as he lived: garnering respect along the journey, with dignity, grace and without complaint. Funeral Blues by W.H. Auden Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone, Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone, Silence the pianos and with muffled drum Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come. Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead Scribbling on the sky the message 'He is Dead'. Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves, Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves. He was my North, my South, my East and West, My working week and my Sunday rest, My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song; I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong. The stars are not wanted now; put out every one, Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun, Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood; For nothing now can ever come to any good. REASNER, THELMA STILLINGS passed October 25, 2013. She was 97 years old and had a healthy, wonderful family- filled life. Thelma was born on May 11, 1916 in Dickens Co. Texas to German Homesteaders, Charlie and Addie Brendle. Her early years were filled with the difficulties of the Dust Bowl and Great Depression. Thelma had one sister, Wilma (Harris), and they worked hard to just survive. The Brendle family moved to Albuquerque in the 1930's. Charlie was a skilled carpenter who built sets for the classic western movies being filmed in NM. Thelma recalled getting dressed up, standing on the airport roof watching movie stars like John Wayne, Clark Gable and Rita Hayworth. Thelma married Walter Stillings in 1940, and traveled with him throughout NM as he sold hardware. They stayed in the classy hotels of that era- El Rancho in Gallup, La Fonda in Santa Fe. The first time she went bowling was in Las Vegas, NM in high heels. Thelma and Walter were active and enjoyed many friends, particularly the friendships of Thelma's sister Wilma and her husband Floyd. Weekends would find the men golfing and in the evenings they took their wives dancing and bowling. Thelma and Walter had three daughters, Sandy, Janet and Vicky. Thelma sewed for the girls and took the time for their varied interests. She was active in the Methodist Church, Girl Scouts and Job's Daughters. She attended the Girl Scout Camp in Cuernavaca Mexico with Janet. That was one of her favorite trips and she could remember details to the end of her life. When the girls started college, Thelma began working in small retail clothing stores. Her caring personality and knowledge made her a successful salesperson. When Walter's health began to fail in the later 1970's, they moved to Anthony, NM to be near Vicky, Sandy and young grandchildren to spoil. Walter passed away in 1981. In1984, Thelma married Ray Reasner and lived in Rio Rancho, NM. Thelma adopted into her generous heart, Jerry, Denny and Darrel Reasner, their wonderful families. Thus began a 23 year marriage of travel, family events and great times at the lake. They stayed in their home until Ray passed away in 2007. Thelma then moved first to Phoenix, then Mokelumne Hill, CA for the remainder of her life. She was involved in the Moke Hill community and she could still play cards and dominos. She was able to attend weddings of her grandchildren and met all but two of her great-grandchildren. In the final months, she was able to stay at home thanks to the loving care of Hospice. Thelma's light will be missed by her daughters and sons-in-law: Sandy (Ed) Lafferty, Janet (Dave) Dock-Spitzer and Vicky Ludwig, and her step-children and wives: Jerry Reasner (Melba), Denny Reasner (Enid), Darrel Reasner (Sheila); and her nieces and nephews Nancy Levesque, Janie Piersol, Butch Harris and Chuck Harris. Thelma had a wonderful sense of humor and could relate to all ages of family and friends. She was proud of her Texas heritage and enjoyed living in New Mexico. She will always live in our hearts.

WATERMAN, ALICE BRIGHAM age 94, passed peacefully from this life with family by her side. She left us on the evening of December 4th, unable to stand but unwilling to lay down, or to paraphrase, unable to fight but unwilling to surrender. We thank God that we had such a woman for our mother. She was born on July 14, 1919 in Niagara Falls, Canada. Alice was the older of two girls. Her parents were Royal Brigham and his wife Helen Knapp Brigham. Alice's childhood was characterized by a strict father and by multiple recurring illnesses. Consequently, the early known world of Alice Brigham was rather small, until she met her husband of 62 years, Robert Ellis Waterman. Bob Waterman was, in many ways, the polar opposite of Alice. Alice was from a small family and Bob was the 15th of 16 children. Alice was well educated, poised, artistic, musical and inclined to follow accepted rules. Bob was not, and sometimes did not. They shared the traits of strength, independence, ambition and perseverance. From that foundation they built a life for themselves and their three sons. Alice's world expanded as she traveled extensively with husband Bob, holding him to his promise "to see the world together" if she would agree to marry him. Bob's swashbuckler's spirit manifested itself in many harrowing travel tales of situations that could have ended the lives of both many years ago. She survived all of life's challenges and she survived her vagabond husband as well. Bob left the partnership in February 2003 after succumbing to cancer at age 81. Alice and Bob moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico from Wichita, Kansas in 1947. At that time, the "Atomic City" was new and so was their family. It was an historic and exciting time in Los Alamos and the Waterman family was blessed to be a part of that significant beginning. Alice and Bob became an integral part of community life and lived their entire life in that small town because they wanted to, not because they had to. Alice outlived most of her old friends, but to her last days, continued to make new friends. Alice's faith led her to become an active member of the United Church of Los Alamos in its founding years. In recent times, she was a member of the Council of Elders. Alice leaves behind three sons and their wives: Kent and Linda; Roger and Emily; and Ted and Lee Ann; eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and her sister, Marian Weaver. A service to celebrate the life of Alice Irene Waterman will be held at the United Church in Los Alamos, New Mexico at 12:00 PM on January 11, 2014.

WOLF, STEVEN The essence of Steve Wolf turns and waves as he walks into the clouds, his job well done. Father's family 'Sage' can be traced back for several hundred years in America; mother's family 'Lorette' combine into a perfect balance of love and nurturance. He thrived in the farm lands of Kankakee, Illinois spending summers on his grandparents farm. During his teenage years, his father's dreams of living 'out west' brought the family to Colorado. Once he had some college under his belt, his work took him to Kearney, Nebraska, where he brought his own young family to enjoy country living. Eventually New Mexico was his final destination where a turn of events lead to fulfilling a long held dream of studying the healing arts and earning a Doctorate in Oriental Medicine. Steve didn't actually need needles, as his energy was so pure that just being in his presence was a healing experience. Steve leaves us now with the glow of love that he planted in each of us to carry on his real work; to love each other with compassion and unconditional acceptance. Thank you Steve and come again. You might have run into him at The University of Washington or University of New Mexico or Southwest Acupuncture College. Steve worked as a nursing home administrator at Horizon and Good Samaritans and was currently employed by the State of New Mexico as a nursing home inspector. Steve is survived by wife, Caroline Margaret Wolf; son, Christopher Steven (Lorna) Wolf; daughter, Amy Elizabeth Wolf; step-son, Frank (Patti) Tijerino; step-son, Noel (Lori) Tijerino; step-daughter, Lenora Tijerino; grandchildren, Liam Christopher Wolf, Henry Richard Wolf, Caleb Tijerino, Jacob Tijerino and Evie Tijerino; mother, Shirley Ann Wolf; sisters, Mary (Jim) Hoogshagen, and Sue Schaefer. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Harold Wolf. In lieu of flowers Steve would smile if donations were made to the Watermelon Mountain Ranch or PETA. Please visit our online guest book for Steven at www.FrenchFunerals.com. FRENCH - Rio Rancho 1950 Pine Rd NE 505-338-2000
