BOYDEN, LILA MILLIGAN Our Dear Lila, You were taken from us so early. We were just getting started in the next phase of our lives. We had dreams of traveling, being new grandparents, spending quality time with our family and friends and enjoying each other as we transitioned to retirement. You only had a brief time with our new grandson Levi, he is such a joy, full of energy and curiosity. We will always remind him of the special love you had for him. It was a privilege to have been a part of your life, to know your kindness, beauty, humor, compassion and friendship. We are all full of sadness, but also happy that we had many wonderful years together. Our love for you will live forever. With love, Ashley, Nick, Levi, Shawn, Charla, Carol, Betty, and especially your Best Friend, Tom.

BOYDEN, LILA MILLIGAN November 4,1950 - June 9, 2012 It's been a year since you left us. It seems like you are still in Spokane. There is not a day that goes by that our minds are not filled with fond memories of you. Who else would have made us hide in the floorboard of the car as you cruised McDonalds? Who could pass up summers at our pool with Carol's veggie-matic french fries and burgers? How about our awesome State Fair outfits and your white boots? Remember Red River and the fireworks? No one can top our amazing acrobatic pool routines for Tom to video!! We miss your Let-Lou's at family dinners!! You were an amazing big sister, Lila. Through the years we have shared so many belly laughs, tears of joy, and unfortunately, prayers through our grief. You always guided our path. We miss you and are thankful for the times we were blessed to share with you. They still brighten our days and bring smiles to our hearts. We love you! Char, Carol and Nonnie

DURRETT, LEONORA 75, died May 29th, 2013 from symptoms associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Ms. Durrett became a professional printmaker after raising five children and working 20 years as a middle school art teacher in the public schools. Leonora was an active member of the Albuquerque Teachers Federation throughout her teaching career, wrote the state's first middle school charter at Taylor Middle School, and was the recipient of a yearlong fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities to study the connections between indigenous philosophy and recent advances in quantum physics and chaos theory. The daughter of James M. Durrett and Dorothy Rainwater Durrett, she was born July 25, 1937 in Tucumcari, New Mexico in the same house as her mother. She lived almost her entire life in the state, most of her adult life in her beloved North Valley. She earned her bachelor's in fine art from the University of New Mexico and then returned for a master's degree in education and her state teaching credential. An innovative art teacher throughout her career, Leonora created a fully functioning television news and animation studio at Truman Middle School when it opened in the 1970's. She felt that art classes were invaluable because they fostered a space where challenging students who might not succeed academically could work hard, cultivate their creativity, and even heal through art. She was especially proud of the "tough kids" who flourished in her classes. She always judged the success of a school's art program by the quality of its neighborhood graffiti. Leonora had little patience for inaction and often stood on principles of right and wrong. She had a deep sense of fairness and justice that she expressed throughout her life. Believing strongly in racial equality, she adopted two mixed-ethnicity children at a time when racial matching was the adoption norm. As a union member and neighborhood leader at the Cimino Compound where she lived, she fought hard in what she believed in, particularly democratic process. She worked especially hard to save the community garden at Cimino Compound where she lived. Leonora loved and supported fiercely her five children, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, always encouraging them to pursue their passions and giving advice and suggestions along the way. One grandson wrote to her, "You've always pushed me to be creative and to advocate and be proud of my identity. Your free attitude is something that I will always carry with me and I'm so lucky to have someone who instilled the ability to think creatively in me." After she retired from 20 years as an Albuquerque Public Schools art teacher, Leonora returned to creating art almost full-time. She was an early member of the New Grounds Print Workshop where she created large monotype landscapes. About her work, Leonora wrote, "I explore the interwoven rhythms and infinite solitude of a landscape. Rather than depicting a specific location, I search for those fragile moments when abstract patterns of earth and sky reflect the spiritual immediacy of a place." "The importance of time," she wrote, "is reflected in my work as I build an image with as many as thirty layers over a period of days. I work with relationships of color, texture, light, and shapes to form images that are as rich and layered as the landscape that inspired them." Leonora's works have been shown in India, Toronto, Tokyo, France, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, and England. She was represented by New Grounds Gallery in Albuquerque and Occasions Gallery in Scottsdale. Some of her work can be viewed at newgroundsprintshop.com. She was a lifelong athlete, playing defense on a six-woman basketball squad at Highland High School in the 1950's and then learning to shoot as a member of a successful Senior Olympics basketball team beginning when she was 68. Also in her late 60's, she rode her bicycle from Utah's Bryce Canyon to Zion National Park. She loved and trained dogs and was a volunteer with her children's 4-H club and YMCA swim team. Leonora is survived by son Jay Bobroff and his wife Louise Martinez, daughter Dana Bobroff and her husband Michael Mirimanian, son Kip Bobroff and his wife Michele Pfeiffer, son Michael Bobroff, and daughter Kara Bobroff and her husband Paul Campbell; grandchildren Jason Bobroff Clay, Desiree Martinez, Matthew Martinez, Jackie Bobroff, and Reed Bobroff; great-grandchildren Naomi, Nikki, and Josiah Martinez, Xander Parra, and Azzlyn Martinez; and Ona Bellino, her closest and oldest friend. She was cared for lovingly during her illness by dear friends Grace Collins, Karin Retskin, and Marie Mound and by Adriana Garcia, Guillemina Valverde de Torres, and Peter Reed. Leonora will be remembered through her art. As she said, "I want my images to convey a sense of peace, but, at the same time, I allow them to offer the promise of change and transformation. The passage of time is as important in the development of my images as my choices of ink and paper." The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Native American Community Academy, 1100 Cardenas Avenue S.E., Albuquerque, New Mexico 87108 or on-line at www.nacaschool.org/support-naca/make-a-donation/ or to the "Friends of the Leaf" Community Garden at Cimino Compound, 3939 Rio Grande Blvd. NW, Unit 77, Albuquerque, NM 87107. A celebration of her life will be held July 21. Please contact kipbobroff(at)gmail.com for more information.

LEE, JOYCE HESLA Joyce Lee, age 88, died June 3, 2013, in Albuquerque, NM, after a long decline due to dementia. Joyce was born May 5, 1925, on a farm near Wakonda, SD, to parents Inman A. and Agnes Brendsel Hesla. She attended Pleasant Dell country school, Augustana Academy (high school), Canton, SD, and studied at both the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, and Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD, graduating from Augustana in 1946. In 1948, Joyce married G. Orion (Luby) Lee, a classmate at Augustana. Prior to her marriage, Joyce taught high school English and music in Watertown, SD, and Luverne, MN. She and Luby taught together in Hull, IA, from 1948-50, after which Joyce took a "break" to raise four children. During this time the family lived in Boulder, CO, and Marshall and Duluth, MN, moving to Willmar, MN, in 1959. In 1965, she resumed teaching music, first at Willmar Junior High School for three years, then in several elementary schools until she retired in 1986. An active member of Vinje Lutheran Church, Willmar, she sang in the adult choir, directed the Confirmation Girls Choir, and served in numerous other capacities. In 2001 Joyce relocated to Albuquerque, living her last seven years at the Garland House where she received loving, excellent care. In addition to music, Joyce loved being with her family; many vacations were spent with her parents, children, siblings, and extended family on the home farm in southeastern South Dakota. In retirement she enjoyed travel across the country to visit her grandchildren and to attend elderhostels. Having grown up during the Depression, Joyce learned to be frugal. She could sew, knit, mend, and generally figure out how to get a little more mileage out of everything. She and Luby enjoyed happy and relaxing summers sailing, swimming, and biking at their lake home near Willmar, prior to Luby's death in 1985. Joyce was also preceded in death by her parents and three of her siblings, Arlene Hamilton, Helen Heihn, and Inman Hesla.
