BACK, STANLEY loved by so many, went to be with his Lord on Friday, January 11, 2013. Born June 25, 1933 in Oswego, Kansas, he was the youngest of seven siblings born to Sanford and Bessie Back. After his high school graduation he met and married the love of his life, LaTrell Lucas. They were married December 10, 1951 in Fayetteville, Arkansas then moved to San Diego, California where he served his country in Korea as part of the U.S. Navy aboard the Navy stores ship, USS Merapi, AF-38. When his tour was complete, they moved to Albuquerque to begin their married lives. The jobs he held gave him a direct connection to their new home as a route driver for Rainbow Bread and Frito Lay. He could still tell you today historical facts and stories about the many business places he served. His passion for singing was fulfilled in two very important areas of life. One place was being the music director during his many years of faithful service at his home church, Bella Vista Baptist, where he continued to participate in their music programs until his passing. His other passion place to sing was the Albuquerque Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, a member for over 50 years. This association gave him opportunities to sing to others in public through contests, nursing homes, local churches and the always popular Singing Valentines in February. He couldn't wait to retire after many years at Montgomery Ward and Phillips 66, to just enjoy his life. This meant spending time with his beloved wife and family and never missing an opportunity for his morning breakfast burrito or coffee and doughnuts (holes only please) at various regular locations in town. He was proceeded in death by his wife, LaTrell; two daughters, Evalyn (Blaine Harvey) and Dorinda (Wes Sickenger) of Albuquerque, three sons; Roy (Deanna), of Albuquerque, Barry (Karen) and Grady (Lezlie) of Texas. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, Brandon, Darren, Daniel, Benjamin, Joanna, Stephanie, Stephen, Justin, Baylie and Brayden; ten great-greatgrandchildren, Jacob, Carson, Elyssa, Abigale, Kaylee, Colton, Kenna, Caleb, Cooper, Cason and Camden (who he's already met as he's not arriving until March!) His blessings continued in having many honorary children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Teresa, Timmy, Tiffany, Sarah, Sharon, Bradley, Zachery, Sevenah, Patrick; and untold others that happily called him Grandpa. And still more family survive him; two brothers, Dean (Marilyn) and Ernie (Rita) his sister Sandy and a multitude of nieces and nephews. This humble faithful Christian man will leave a very large empty space in the lives of all his family and many friends. A Visitation will be held at FRENCH - Lomas on Monday, January 14, 2013 from 5 to 7pm. Services will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at 1:00pm, Bella Vista Baptist Church, 2800 Louisiana Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. BESSON, PAULINE GOLDIE Perhaps you brought or served food. Perhaps you sent a lovely card and sat quietly in a chair. Perhaps you sent a floral piece, if so we saw it there. Perhaps you spoke the kindest words as any friends could say, perhaps you were not there at all, just thought or prayed for us that day. Whatever the part the Lord had you play to console our hearts, we thank you so much, and may He bless each one of you. The family of Pauline Besson. FRENCH 1111 University Blvd NE 505-843-6333

BLACK, NELLIE MAE BISSETT Age 96, of Albuquerque, NM, formerly of Las Cruces, NM, Vincennes, IN and Deep Valley, PA passed away on February 26, 2012 after a brief decline following a stroke. She was predeceased by her brothers, Kenneth, Joseph, Edison, and Wilson Bissett; her sister, Mrs. Mary (Bissett) Ornduff; her husband, Dr. Boyd Keough Black who passed away in 1982; and her oldest son, Andrew Bissett Black. She is survived by her four children, David Black of Vanderpool, Texas, Rebecca Bringle of Indianapolis, Indiana, Cynthia Hall of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and John Thomas Black of Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren; and six great- grandchildren. Nellie was born on July 8, 1915 at home at her family's farm in Deep Valley, West Virginia, the fourth of six children of Nellie Mae Autin Bissett and Marion Wilson Bissett. Her father was a schoolteacher, church elder, and owner of an oil well drilling business and the first Ford dealership in the vicinity. Her mother ran the farm and household, usually feeding not only the family but hired hands, as well. In her childhood, Nellie attended a one-room school house for a time, studied McGuffie's Reader, sang hymns with the family around the piano in the parlor, and worked beside her mother and sister canning food for winter, churning butter, and sewing clothes. She was a bright, hardworking student and, for her last year of high school, lived with her older sister in a boarding house in a nearby town to attend a better school. Nellie's upbringing was loving, orderly, and imbued with home-centered purpose and optimism, characteristics she possessed throughout her life. Nellie trained as a nurse before entering Waynesburg College in Pennsylvania, where she graduated with a BS degree in 1940. She completed coursework for a Master's Degree in Biology at Duke University, but interrupted her thesis work on childhood obesity to marry a young medical student, Boyd Black, and move with him to Vermont for the completion of his medical school and internship. He entered the Navy in 1943, and Nellie's growing family moved a number of times during his 12-year naval career, living in California, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. After the Navy, they settled in Vincennes, Indiana in 1957, where Nellie was a homemaker and pursued her lifelong interest in art. While rearing her five children, Nellie earned a BS in Art Education from Indiana State University in 1964 and studied art at the Herron School of Art and the Art League of Indianapolis. Nellie taught art briefly at Vincennes University and became a professional portrait artist, painting hundreds of portraits for family and friends and on commission. She displayed her works in private and juried shows in Indiana, New Mexico and Colorado, often winning awards. Throughout her art career, Nellie studied with many well-known artists, including Sergei Bongart, Albert Handel and Zhang Wenxin. In 1980, Nellie and her husband retired to Las Cruces, New Mexico, where she continued to paint and pursue other creative outlets including designing quilts, making bead jewelry, and creating bookmarks and greeting cards from pressed flowers. She moved to Albuquerque in 1991 to be near her new grandchildren, on whose lives she was a gentle, helpful influence. Following a private family gathering upon her death, her cremated remains were returned to Indiana and buried next to her eldest son's grave in the Upper Indiana Cemetery in Vincennes.

After her husband's untimely death, she was forced to raise her three children alone. She learned to drive and bought her first car and first home in 1967. The previous year, she went to work for Albuquerque Public Schools as a baker. She enjoyed watching countless children grow up as they visited with her in the lunch line every day _ from Atrisco, Carlos Rey and Navajo Elementary schools to Rio Grande and West Mesa high schools. Her hands well worn from 21 years of kneading dough and mixing batter, she retired at the end of the school year in 1987. Even after she left her cafeteria post at Navajo Elementary, she was well known for her rolls, cakes and other desserts. At home, if she wasn't in the kitchen, she was spending time outside _ either in the garden growing her tomatoes, onions and squash, or taking long walks along the South Valley's ditch banks. She enjoyed picking wild blackberries and teaching her granddaughter how to make tortillas, and she rarely missed going to the swimming pool three times a week with her fellow senior citizens. She kept the road hot with her 1967 Volkswagen Beetle and didn't believe in wasting anything. If something broke, she would find a way to fix it. From a young age, she was not afraid to venture out on her own. That sense of adventure coupled with her big heart made for a unique package that was simply Marie. She was a very special woman who will be sorely missed by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Francisco Paradisa; mother Eva M. Wolfe; brother Tony Paradisa; and husband Edwin Grier. She is survived by son Larry Grier, daughter-in-law Mariam and grandsons Christopher and Tyler of Rio Rancho, N.M.; son David Grier of Tijeras, N.M.; and daughter Debra Montoya, son-in-law Eugene Montoya, and granddaughter Susan Montoya Bryan, all of Rio Rancho, N.M. A rosary will be held Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at French-Rio Rancho, 1950 Pine Rd. NE, Rio Rancho, N.M. Burial will be Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 10 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Park in Albuquerque, N.M. Please visit our online guest book for Marie at www.FrenchFunerals.com. HARTMAN, EDWARD MARTIN Age 94, died on Wednesday, January 9, 2013. He was born to John Frederick Christian Hartman and Anna Laura Malinda Waterman Hartman in New Bremen, Ohio on February 13, 1918. The second youngest of eight children, he helped his family survive the depression by making wooden boxes for the local creamery, delivering newspapers on both morning and evening routes, and other miscellaneous work when he could find it. The only one of his siblings to go to college, he lived under the stadium at Ohio State and worked in local restaurants to pay his rent and tuition while pursuing a degree in accounting. He graduated in 1940 and took his first job on Wall Street in New York City. He then worked for the same accounting firm in Detroit, MI during which time he earned his Certified Public Accountant designation. In 1941 he joined the U.S. Army Air Corp. In 1943 he received commission as a 2nd Lieutenant while being trained at Harvard University. The next four years he served in the Air Corp as a Statistical Officer at various training bases. After discharge from the service in 1947, he moved to Clovis, NM to operate a CPA firm. In 1950, he was elected President of the New Mexico Society of CPA's. In 1951, he was appointed New Mexico State Finance Officer by Governor Edwin L. Mechem for four terms. In between terms he started his own natural gas company, Manana Gas, and lived and worked on projects in Artesia and Farmington. Later, Governor David Cargo appointed him to a fifth and sixth term as State Finance Director from 1967 to 1971. As Director of Finance he developed a reputation as an honest and competent public official, who was respected by members of both political parties. He resigned his position to run for Governor in 1970 and was defeated by Pete Domenici in the primary, who in turn lost the general election to Bruce King. He returned to private life and ran his natural gas company Manana Gas. In 1972 he was chairman of the Richard Nixon re-election committee and was active in New Mexico Republican party politics throughout his life. He was also active in community groups- a 32nd degree Mason for over 50 years, a member of the Albuquerque Petroleum club for 20 years, and member of the Albuquerque OB's club for over 20 years. LINKOUS, NEVA RACHEL Born in Kingsport, TN, March 3, 1925, died peacefully at home on January 7, 2013 in Albuquerque, NM at age 87. Neva grew up in Kingsport, TN where she attended Kingsport High School, inherited her mother's cheerful temperament, crashed a plane in a bean field while taking flying lessons, and met her lifelong husband and companion, Col. Russell E. Linkous (USAF-Ret.). Married October 16, 1945, Neva and Russ went on to make their lives in Emery, VA; Columbus, OH; San Antonio, TX; Long Beach and Livermore, CA; Camp Springs, MD; and Albuquerque. Neva preserved her jubilant "Tennessee twang" and Southern charm throughout all her years and managed to volunteer and work at a number of interesting jobs, all while raising four sons and supporting Russ in his long and successful career as an Air Force officer. Neva was a skilled secretary, which eventually led her to serve as personal secretary and office manager to U.S. Senators John Tower of Texas and Joseph Montoya of New Mexico in their Washington, DC offices. Equally skilled as a seamstress and homemaker, Neva designed costumes for the Albuquerque Little Theater and the Civic Light Opera, including all of the costumes for productions of The King and I, Li'l Abner and South Pacific, each of which played for several weeks at the Albuquerque Civic Center in the late 1960's. As a devoted mother and avid supporter of her boys, Neva was always ready to serve as den mother, PTA volunteer, junior rodeo mom, horse show mom, roadie for the band, or to offer a kind word and a welcome place to come home to. Neva spread her love to others through her delectable cookies and brownies, and especially delighted in baking with her grandchildren. She was a devoted member of Paradise Hills United Methodist Church and enjoyed volunteering in the church pre-school. Neva was comforted by the kindness, peace, and prayers offered by Rev. Dave Snyman and her fellow church members and friends during her last year. PORTER, WILLARD JACK 1922 - 2013 our loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, gentle brother, uncle and loyal friend, passed from this life into the next phase of his eternal journey on Jan. 2, 2013. His beloved wife and eternal companion, Evelyn, as well as loving parents, siblings, grandparents and grandson, joyfully greeted him with open arms. Jack was born Feb. 2, 1922 in Ashton Idaho, the third of six children born to Melvin Homer Porter and Ada Carlson. He graduated from Weston High School in Idaho and attended Weber State College in Utah and the University of New Mexico. Jack served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WW II. He made lifelong friends as he served during the war in Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines, and Japan. In 1947, after the war, he moved from Utah to Albuquerque to help his father and brother in a newly acquired coin operated amusement vending machine venture. Music Service Co. was the result of their efforts and 65 years later, 'til the day Jack left this earth, he was involved in that business. Jack married the love of his life, Evelyn Arlene Holloway on July 11, 1953. They were later sealed in the Mesa Arizona LDS Temple. Jack was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved God with all his heart. His kind, generous spirit was a reflection of that love. Jack and Evelyn both held their private pilot license and one of their fondest memories was flying together in their Cessena 182. Jack loved to cook breakfast (he was a short order cook in San Francisco before the war) and we will miss his delicious morning meals, his kind generosity and how everything was "maavelous" in his eyes. Jack is survived by his three daughters, Kathy (Wayne) Buell of Heber City, Utah, Pat Nodal of Albuquerque, and Kimberlee Porter of Midvale, Utah. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother; two sister-in-laws; and many nieces and nephews.
