HUNTER -- C.L. Was born in the beautiful Espanola Valley, a community that would forever steal his heart and where his love for the land and its people would guide the next 83 years of his life. C.L. passed away peacefully July 21. And though his passing was quiet, it was one of the few moments in his life that was so. For C.L. was never much for quiet. A man who knew how to pack a lifetime's worth of memories into a day, it was hard to find him standing still. He always charmed his way to the front of the line, drove in the left lane and took the stairs two at a time. And to the man who never met a stranger, the hurry was always in the name of the people in his community. He spent much of his life encouraging growth in Espanola. He worked as a volunteer firefighter, city councilor, and Board member for Presbyterian Hospital. He was vice-president of the Plaza Foundation and a member of the Espanola Valley Chamber of Commerce. One of the original founders of and chairman of the Board at Valley National Bank, C.L.'s presence was also right up the road at Hunter Tractor Company, which he ran until the late 1990s. He also served as president of the New Mexico Auto Dealers Association during part of his 60 years as owner and operator of Hunter Motor Company. But even this passionate businessman, whose name will echo in the world he loved, knew how to take off his tie for the weekend. When he wasn't mingling with friends and strangers in town, he was meeting them for hunting and fishing trips and evening poker games, or perhaps he was making new connections on the ski slopes and in the stands at Lobo football and basketball games. And even after the ripe age of 70, you may have caught him standing in line for a rollercoaster ride. While C.L.'s business savvy and extra-curricular activities were plenty to be proud of, what made his smile sparkle brightest was the mere sight of his family and friends. C.L. was preceded in death by his parents, C.V. and Angeline Hunter, and brother, Donald. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughter, Beverly Gallegos and husband, Steve; son, Don Edward Hunter and wife, Joy; grandchildren, Clyde and Jeremy Hunter and Melanie Salazar; great-grandchildren, Ariana Hunter and Caden Lukas (C.L.) Salazar Floyd; niece, Janice Hudnall; and honorary sister, Eloise Velarde. Friends and family are invited to participate in a celebration of C.L.'s life Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at DeVargas Mortuary in Espanola. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff of Casa de Rosa Assisted Living and requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the facility, located at 10127 Guadalupe Trail NW, Albuquerque, NM, 87114. The family of C.L. Hunter has entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Espanola Valley 505-747-7477 or www.devargasfuneral.com

HURD -- PHYLLIS BASSLER Wonderful mother, special grandmother and great friend. Phyllis was born April 29, 1916, in Roaring Spring, PA, the daughter of John R. and Edith B. Bassler. Despite her formative years having occurred during the Depression, she grew up in a lively, generous home where her parents planted the seeds for her life-long kind and caring spirit. She was a graduate of Roaring Spring High School and the Altoona School of Commerce. Phyllis has remained close with many of her childhood friends throughout her long and productive life. After working briefly in Altoona for Pennsylvania Power & Light, she was recruited by the Roaring Spring Paper Mill to join their payroll department. She often told stories of the long work weeks at the Mill, and clearly remembered getting only partial holidays for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day. Phyllis married James Whittier Hurd on October 29, 1940. She and Jim moved to Harrisburg in 1949, where she worked for the Pennsylvania Anthracite Institute as a legislative relations specialist until the office was closed due to a fire that occurred as a consequence of Hurricane Agnes in 1972. For the next 8 years she worked for the State of Pennsylvania Revenue Department until retiring at age 65. From the 1970s to the late 1980s, Phyllis was an antique dealer associated with a variety of Harrisburg-area consignment centers - the last of which was the "Barn" at Hershey. She loved collecting and selling cut-and pressed-glass along with fine porcelain. She spent countless Saturdays going to public auctions with her husband and daughter Pam and enjoyed nothing more than finding a real "treasure" that other dealers had overlooked. Phyllis was a life-long member of the Order of Eastern Star having served Estrelita Chapter 512 in Harrisburg in several offices, culminating as Worthy Matron. Many of her closest and longest friendships were developed from her ties to Eastern Star (both her home Chapter and throughout Central PA). She also served as secretary of the PA Association of Retired Employees (PARSE) until 1994 when she moved to Albuquerque to be close to her only child, daughter Pam, son-in-law Ron and grandson Kyle. During this latter period, she was active in the Daughters of the Nile and Masonic Widows organizations, and was a member of Hoffmantown Church. Throughout her life, Phyllis loved to play piano for family and friends, speak in public (as a school girl she had won oratory awards), create needlepoint, knit scarves, and grow roses. She had a true green thumb regardless of the climate or planting conditions. She left full, thriving rose gardens at her homes in Harrisburg and later in Albuquerque. Her family and many friends in Albuquerque and Harrisburg will miss her sunny disposition, can-do attitude, kind and generous friendship, and her wonderful smile. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, husband James, and brother John R."Jack" Bassler, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Pamela Hurd-Knief, son-in-law Ronald A. Knief, beloved grandson Kyle Alexander Hurd Knief, sister-in-law Catherine Bassler, niece Cornelia Rutherford, and nephew John Bassler. Services will be held at French ~ Wyoming Chapel on Friday, July 29, 2011, 11:00 a.m., family and friends may visit one hour prior to service. A private interment will take place. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to: The Bassler-Hurd Political Science Scholarship Fund at Juniata College. Checks should be mailed to the Office of Development; Juniata College; 1700 Moore Street; Huntingdon, PA 16652. Please visit our online guestbook for Phyllis at www.RememberTheirStory.com Lovingly Pre-planned at FRENCH 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE (505) 823-9400

MARTINEZ -- LeRoy U. If it were said that LeRoy was a great man, it would be a grave injustice to his character. My father was the greatest man that I have had the honor of knowing. He defined the essence of humility, integrity, honor, bravery and righteousness. He blessed our lives with his wisdom, intellect, humor and boundless love. LeRoy illustrated the qualities of a good man. In times when he had nothing to give, he gave to those who were in greater need. His sacrifice as a father, as a husband and as a friend was without measure. There was only one request that he had of us, it was that we did our best in any endeavor we undertook. In like manner, he loved the Lord Jesus with all of his heart, mind and strength. His faith never waivered; and unto his final breath, never did he utter a complaint. Let it be said, that my father was truly a child of our Father in heaven. We miss you dearly, dad; until we meet again, we love you very much. Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum.
