BACA -- VERA LOIS Found peace on the 21st of June, 2011. Vera personified a true loving, Catholic wife and mother. Vera belonged to the Catholic Daughters for years, taking part in their activities. Vera was born and grew up in San Pedro, New Mexico, where her mother taught school, and her parents were very active in the local school board. Her father, Joe Black, moved the family to Albuquerque in 1931, because he felt his children would receive a better education. Vera was the eldest of ten children. Vera graduated from Albuquerque High School and attended the University of New Mexico. Vera was married to Charlie Baca, Sr. in 1942. They were happily married for 66 years. Vera and Charlie were very proud of their four children, seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Vera was one of the few people who could tell her identical grandsons apart when they were infants and later. Vera and her husband Charlie were very popular in their community and were frequently invited to lead the "Marchas" at any wedding dances for family and friends. Vera volunteered her time with Meals on Wheels. Vera was very active in the senior center at Barelas and enjoyed making homemade crafts, baking, and gardening. She also enjoyed completing crossword puzzles, working them daily. She was always there for her family, and enjoyed being a homemaker. She was ready with kisses or hugs to make anything better. She was well loved by family and friends and will be greatly missed. Vera and Charlie enjoyed a rich life, playing bingo, and visiting casinos. She had a great sense of humor and loved fun with family. May she rest in peace. BURKETT -- JAY D. Age 70. Funeral services for Jay D. Burkett of Pismo Beach, CA will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 30, 2011 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with C. K. Holt officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with family members serving as pallbearers. Those desiring to make memorial contributions may send them to the Albuquerque Christian Children's Home or the New Mexico Christian Children's Home. Jay D. Burkett passed from this life on June 23, 2011 in Arroyo Grande, California. He had dealt with COPD and had been on oxygen for 15 years. He was a member and worshipped with the Church of Christ in Grover Beach, California. Jay was born on June 24, 1940 to Alan and Freeda Burkett at Dora, New Mexico; their firstborn son. He attended school at Hiway and Dora, graduating from high school in 1958. While attending Eastern New Mexico University and the University of New Mexico he served in the Army Reserve for six years. After completing a degree in Industrial Arts he taught a couple of years in Ganado, Arizona before returning to Albuquerque where he spent the remainder of his working career. He began working at Northwestern Woodworks in 1970 and purchased the business a few years later. In 1980 he sold this business to his shop foreman. He later married Gloria Montoya and helped to raise three step-children Sean, Leanna, and Javier, who were with him the last days of Jay's life. He spent the next few years completing a major addition to the family home. Then, in 1985, he and Dean Douglas, a long time friend back to his days in Portales, began a woodworking business they named Hasty's and Kram's. They operated this business until Jay's health problems made it necessary for Dean to become the sole owner. His next venture after adjusting to being on oxygen was to purchase and modify a mobile travel camper so he could travel and visit old friends and family during the spring through early fall, arriving back at Dora to help his brother with milo harvest. He would stay until after Thanksgiving and then travel to the coast of California for the winter months. He was able to do this for two years before it proved to be too difficult. He found a great environment at Pismo Beach, California, which suited his health and became his home. Jay was blessed to make many new friends and relationships in the Five Cities area during the last nine years which provided strength and encouragement as he lived day by day. The family wishes to thank each of you for sharing in life with him. There will be a memorial service at a later date at the Church of Christ in Grover Beach. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Glen Alan and Maurice Lynn; and one sister, Lou Nell. His mother, Freeda, died in 1959 followed by a step-mother Cleola (Kirk) in 1961. Alan J. Burkett, his father, married Faye (Edwards) in 1963 but he died in 1974. Jay is survived by a brother, Mickey and wife Alicia of Dora, their two daughters, Loreann and Eric Braden of Lubbock, Texas, and Linsey and Fred Canney of Englewood, Colorado. Loreann and Eric have two children, Ryliegh and Teague. The surviving step-children, Sean and Stefanie Montoya with their children Brandon and Chloe of Albuquerque; Leanna and Leonard Aguilar of Albuquerque; and step-son Javier Montoya of San Mateo, California. He is also survived by his step-mother Faye Burkett of Clovis and her daughter Marieta and Bob Hoy of Clovis. There are two other surviving step-sisters, Iona Renner of Friona, Texas and Kay and Cotton Renner of Winnsboro, Louisiana. Also surviving are several close cousins and other family members. Arrangements are under the direction of Wheeler Mortuary of Portales. 575-356-4455

MCDEVITT -- RICHARD E. JR. January 20, 1932 to June 26, 2007 Papa Why did you have to go away? Things that used to mark your presence Are gone now, and emptiness fills their place. Absent is the distant sound of the tractor, Or the murmur of the news, a quiet drone to match the cicadas. The sounds that remain are different without you here. In these bright summer months, You are absent from the back porch, The brief smell of tobacco, carried away on the breeze, A warning of the lightning storms coming our way, The ones that we would watch together. I would be Petunia, and they would be Goofy and Stretch. You would be Saki, if we were trying to be funny. You had a smile for anyone, On Saturday evenings after church. And the world is darker without you in it. But I guess you're still around, In the hummingbirds that drift outside the window, And the planes that fly overhead. So please keep coming around Every once in a while, just so we can see, That years later, you're at peace. Happy 4th Saki, Dad, Papa and Sweetheart
