ALDERETE -- Natividad "Steve" Alderete, 78, a resident of Albuquerque, formerly of Willard, NM, passed away on February 21, 2011 with his loving family at his side. Mr. Alderete is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Mrs. Tarcila Alderete; his children, Dolores Walker and husband, Rico, and Darlene Ortega and husband, Frank; his six grandchildren; his sisters, Gloria Martinez, and husband, Ramon, and Peggy Russell; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. BARTELL -- Charles (Chuck) Bartell, 67, passed away February 1, 2011 in Albuquerque. Chuck was a successful computer consultant until his MS disability forced him to retire in 1991. He was quick with a joke, never complained and was a delight to be around. He loved the Lord and was sure He would hear Him say "welcome home my good and faithful servant". BRAUGHT -- J.L. Braught, 91, resident of Albuquerque since 1931, died on Tuesday, February 22, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Opal of the family home; children, Florence Higgins and husband, Michael of Raton, NM, L.J. Braught and wife, Renee of Belen, R.J. Braught and wife, Betty of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Michael D Higgins Jr. and wife, Lara Czajkowski Higgins, Kirstyn Hart and husband, Jay, Joy Forehand and husband, Jeff and Kimberlee Cash; great grandchildren, James Logan Czajkowski Higgins, Tessa Marie Czajkowski Higgins, Kye Michael Czajkowski Higgins, Krislyn Amy Hart, Christopher Matthew Hart, Stanley Braught, Juliet Jae Forehand, Joley Jaidyn Forehand, Josephine Cash, Jackson William Cash; sister, Euna Rawls; nieces, Patricia Rawls, Jennifer Schramm, Dolly Braught, Barbara Myers, Helen Cole and Dolly; nephews, Jayberry Rawls, Lynel Braught, Shannon Braught and Harry Cole, numerous friends and colleagues. Mr. Braught was preceded in death by his parents, Cloid and Florence Braught, brothers, R.D. Braught and Donald L Braught. J.L. was a member of Riverside Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II. He was a long standing member of the International Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), including the canton and encampment branches. Among the many positions he has held in the IOOF are Grand Treasurer, past grandmaster and sovereign representative. He was a past chaplain of the Sovereign Grand lodge. J.L. served on the Lovelace Clinic advisory board and was a Lovelace volunteer for more than 17 years. J.L. was one of the founder of the IOOF and Rebekahs Recreation Area near Mountainaire. He served on the camp board of governors and enjoyed working on improvements at the camp each year. He had the privilege of being the sovereign IOOF escort for the wreath placed at the tomb of the unknown soldier in Washington D.C. He retired from Lovelace Medical center as director of maintenance and continued to be active in construction estimating for National H and V. J.L. and Opal traveled more than 60,000 miles throughout the United States visiting scenic sites, friends and family. CHAVEZ -- Dennis Fidel Chavez, 67, of Sterling, CO, passed away Feb. 21, 2011, at home after a long battle with cancer. Celebration of life services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 26, 2011 at Peace Lutheran Church. Pastor Gene Zeller will officiate. Inurnment will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Dennis was born August 15, 1943, in Albuquerque, N.M., to Lucy (Riccon) and Forminio Chavez. He was raised by his loving parents Dee (Riccon) and Fidel Chavez. He married Sandra Herauf on Oct. 17, 1964. They had two beautiful children: Renee, his first born whom he adored, and Jeff, who was his only son whom he relied on and became his strength. Dennis served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He later married Marlene Wheeler on July 20, 1979. She was the love of his life. Together they found their passion in the game of golf. They shared many beautiful sunsets on the course. This life allowed them to travel and play on numerous different courses, meeting and making many new friends. He never met a stranger on the course. Dennis adopted Marlene's daughter Kara Marie at an early age and loved her as his own. Early in his career he worked for Trans Union, a credit reporting company in Kentucky. His career led him to Sterling, CO where he purchased a collection agency; Credit Bureau of Logan County. Together he and his son watched this small company grow into five agencies spanning the Colorado and Nebraska region. During this time he held many offices including the President of Associated Credit Bureaus of Colorado from 1982-1984, he was also president of the National Associated Collection Agency during 1984-1985. In January 1996, he became sole proprietor of Chavez Bail Bonds. He was also active in many clubs and organizations, including president of the Sterling, CO Country Club in 1987-1988. He was an honorary member of the B.P.O. Sterling Elks for 30 years. He was also a member of the Sterling Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce. He was most known for this love of golf and will be fondly remembered by all of his golf buddies. He always came home with a thrilling story and the adventures that happened on the course. He spoke highly of all his golf companions. He could also be found visiting his parents every morning for coffee and a game of cards. They shared a close and special relationship. He was eternally grateful for such special loving parents who instilled the true meaning of family which he passed on to his children and grandchildren. His grandchildren kept him young and he and Marlene followed them regularly to many of their sporting events. He rarely missed a game. He is survived by his wife, Marlene; father, Fidel Chavez of Sterling, CO; mother-in-law Eldora Wheeler of Sterling, CO; three children, daughter, Renee Chavez of Fort Collins, CO; son, Jeff and his wife Kristy and their four children, Andrew, Michael, Kylie and Austin all of Sterling, CO; and daughter, Kara Marie Chavez of Denver, CO; his brothers, Ernest Chavez and wife Maria of Albuquerque, N.M., Joe Chavez and wife Sandy of Phoenix, AZ; sisters, Margee Wenzelburger and husband Al of Albuquerque, N.M., Elaine Culbertson and husband James of Los Lunas, N.M.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving mother, Dee Chavez; father-in-law Eugene Wheeler of Sterling, CO. CHAVEZ -- Ernestine E. Chavez - born October 7, 1915; died February 23, 2011 After a short illness, mom passed away peacefully with her family by her side. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carpio Chavez; her mother and father and stepfather; daughters Vivian Trout and Joyce Aragon; and grandson, Roger E. Aragon, Jr. She met her husband Carpio M. Chavez and married in 1934. They had their first daughter, Joyce Marie in 1935 and five years later had twin daughters, Vivian Anita and Viola Eleanor. She is survived by her twin daughter Viola and husband Raymond Aragon; grandson Jesse Aragon and wife Tammy; granddaughter Sonya Atencio and husband John; and her three great-grandchildren, who loved her very, very much, Tiffany, Brittany and Johnny Jr. Mom and Dad owned and operated CMC Printers for over 50 years. Mom was a faithful Witness of her God Jehovah for over 60 years, giving people the hope of a resurrection back to a paradise earth. This was her hope as it is ours. (John 5:28,29). CORDOVA -- Bernard C. Cordova AKA "The Barber" age 47, passed away on Sunday, February 20, 2011. He is preceded in death by his parents, David and Connie Cordova. He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Vaughn; his four daughters, Tausha Moseley and husband, Neil, Shealynn, D'aundra and Kendra Cordova and partner, Richard Padilla and five grandchildren; sisters, Rosemarie Cordova, Margaret Allen and husband, Stan; brothers, Eugene, Joseph and wife, Theresa; and many nieces and nephews. Bernard was a barber at Campus Barber Shop for 30 years and considered it his love and passion. Cremation has taken place. EYERS -- Virgina Jean Eyers, born Virgina Jean Calkins in Albuquerque on April 8th, 1939 to Eugene and Helen Calkins. She was the quintessential Albuquerque native, graduated Albuquerque High in 1957, volunteered in the Civil Air Patrol in 1955 and supported several Albuquerque foundations. She traveled the country with her husband Robert, who survives her after 52 years of marriage, and settled back in Albuquerque in 1971 for the rest of her life which ended Febuary 24, 2011. She is survived by her four children, Brian L. Eyers of Albuquerque, Rebecca L. Sugden and her husband James Sugden of Meical Lake WA, Sandra K. Gaudin of Phoenix AZ, Frank A. Eyers of Albuquerque; Virgina also has two grandchildern Dylan and Rachael Sugden of Spokane WA, whom she cherished greatly; She is also survived by her sister Lois Brennand and brother Rick Calkins. She loved animals, plants, classical music and supported the arts in all its forms. She was passionate about politics and an avid watcher of C-SPAN. HOWE -- Gary L. Howe, a resident of Sandia Park, NM passed away unexpectedly February 19, 2011. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Cathy. Two sons he loved and respected, a daughter-in-law he loved as a daughter, Brian, Robyn and Jeff Howe. His two grandchildren, Malia and Aidan Howe who were the light of his life. He was born and raised in Rochester, WI; to all in WI he was known as "George." He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth J. and Eloise Albright Howe. He is survived by his sisters, Judy (Jim) Oestrich, Betty (Jerry) Heberling, Bonnie (Fermin) Garcia, and Patti (Rick) Thole. He had a special place in his heart for all of Cathy's family; and many loved nieces and nephews. Gary came to NM to attend UNM graduating in 1970 with an EE degree. He went to work for Motorola Communications in 1974, then transferred and lived in HI for five years. He was deeply committed and loyal to the company and to his many "Motorolans" and customers he was privileged to know. Retiring from Motorola after 32 years he spent the next five years with Pro2Serve enjoying his colleagues and customers there. Gary was an accomplished musician singing and also playing instruments including keyboards and the accordion. Throughout the years he has been in numerous local bands, his most recent being 8Track and Bad Katz Blues. Gary so much enjoyed each band member. He loved playing and singing hymns, especially at "The Barn" church. He had numerous hobbies including riding his Harley with his buddies, Ham Radio, being out in nature with his gun by his side, video games, taking his grandchildren on four-wheeler rides and of course keeping up with the latest gadgets. Many will remember his special passion - setting up his trains at Christmas. Gary was a man of faith. He lived out his faith humbly sometimes with words, always with deed and always with a melody and joy for Our Lord in his heart. We all will miss him, his smile and his love for life. He was special to many people - no one will miss him more than his family. A service will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 2:00 p.m., at French - Lomas. PLACE -- William L., a resident of Los Lunas, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 23, 2011. He was a member of San Clemente Catholic Church in Los Lunas. William attended UNM and proudly served his country in the US Navy for four years during the Korean War era as well as the Naval Reserve for several years after that. He retired as Police Chief from the Village of Los Lunas. He was preceded in death by his father, William A. Place and his mother, Anita C. Place. William is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Ellen J. Place; his children, William A. Place III and wife, Jennifer, Robert K. Place and Carla J. Place; one brother, Richard K. Place; one grandson, Noah and two great-granddaughters, Skyler and Bella Place. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins as well as two very dear loved ones, Joseph Minor and David Thyfault. RIGGS -- Jacki Pieracci Riggs, a resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, February 24, 2011. She was born May 13, 1954, in San Jose, California to the late Leo and Laura Pieracci. She graduated at the top of her class in 1972 from Soquel High School, and then ventured on to Brigham Young University shortly thereafter where she studied child development and family relations. She moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, with her friend Suzanne Stokes before she completed her studies. She worked at the Albuquerque Treatment Alternatives to Street Crime from 1976-1978 where she began her public service career dedicating her personal and professional time to giving back to the community, and working with troubled children and adolescents. She later became director of the Alcohol Education Program in the Second Judicial District of Albuquerque from 1978 to 1980, under the leadership of District Judge William Riordan. During this time, she built a strong group of friends and married her beloved spouse, Joseph N. Riggs III. Motivated by the impact she was able to make in her field and with the support of her husband, she completed her undergraduate studies with a Bachelors in Science in 1981. She then entered a second degree program at the University of New Mexico in Special Education. She graduated with a Master's of Arts with an emphasis in behavioral disorders in 1983. She gave birth to three children while pursing her education, Joseph Riggs IV in 1979, Amanda Riggs in 1981, and Austin Riggs in 1983. She returned to work as a teacher of emotionally disturbed children at the Children's Psychiatric Hospital in 1985, at which point she also entered the Doctoral Studies program at the University of New Mexico in Special Education, where she attained a Doctorate of Philosophy in 1992. In work, she was promoted shortly thereafter to Director of Juvenile Facilities at the New Mexico Correctional Department in August of 1986. She was appointed by Governor Garrey Carruthers as the New Mexico Cabinet Secretary of the Youth Authority in May 1987 where she served until 1990. After she left state government, she continued to offer her expertise in education policy for several years to state facilities, educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations. She joined Bosque Preparatory School as the Director of Admissions in 1995 and pursued consulting services throughout the educational community in New Mexico. She later was asked to join the New Mexico Business Roundtable for Educational Excellence as President and Chief Executive Officer in 1999 where she remained for five years. After leaving the Business Roundtable, she underwent two kidney transplants, beginning in 2004, and had a series of severe illnesses. Despite these setbacks, she remained very active in the community and served on multiple boards and committees in Albuquerque, including the Albuquerque Public Schools Education Foundation Board, Early Childhood Action Network, YWCA Board of Directors, College of Education Advancement Council (Chair of Steering Committee for three years), WESST Board of Directors (Chair for one year), United Way Alexis De Tocqueville Society and Women in Philanthropy, New Mexico Office of Educational Accountability Advisory Board, New Mexico First Education Implementation Team, Teacher Education Advisory Council, Education Commission of the States (Governor appointed), Governor's Substance Abuse Advisory Council, Community Corrections Panel, and the Youth Authority Commission. She received a number of awards including the University of New Mexico ZIA Award in 2004, the New Mexico Distinguished Public Service Award in 2004, and the YWCA Women on the Move Award Nominee in 2000. Jacki was also a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Governor's Task Force on Higher Education, the Three Tiered Teacher Licensure Council, two Legislative Education Study Committees on School Reform and Governance Issues, the Governor's Council on Early Childhood Services, the New Mexico Society of Executives, New Mexico First, the National Council of Crime in Delinquency, Council for Exceptional Children (four chapters), the National Organization for Female Executives, the American Correctional Association, and Women Executives in State Government. She was also the Vice Chair of the Governor's Progress Agenda and Chair of the Governance Subcommittee. Jacki dedicated her life to improving educational systems in New Mexico for all the state's children. She is survived by her loving husband, Joseph who serves as a criminal defense attorney who works tirelessly keeping the judicial system ethical and helping people navigate their legal battles and get back on their feet. He is also an avid watercolorist and a warm, loving father. Jacki's oldest son, Joseph the IV, lives in Austin, Texas, with his beautiful wife Maricela, head of marketing and product development at Ben White Florist, and four-year-old daughter Isabela. He began his career as a teacher at a charter school and now serves as the Superintendent of the Central Region for Responsive Education Solutions. He currently pursues a Master's in Accounting at Texas State University. Jacki's only daughter, Amanda, graduated with a Master's in Public Administration from the George Washington University in 2006 and spent the last four years working in Cairo, Egypt. She now works as a Middle East advisor at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, DC. Jacki's youngest son, Austin, is a full time Master's of Business Administration at the New York University's Stern School of Business. Previously, he worked for MZA Events where he was a producer for various events including AIDS Walk New York, the New York City Marathon, and the National Equality March. She is also survived by her three younger brothers, Kenneth Brown of Fremont, CA, Steven Brown of Nampa, ID, and Greg LaRue-Paden of Santa Cruz, CA. SAITTA -- Vincent J. Saitta, 93 years old of Albuquerque, New Mexico joined his wife of 67 years, Mary K. Saitta on February 23, 2011. He was one of five children born in Jersey City, New Jersey on July 23, 1917. He served honorably in the 100th Infantry Division of the United State Army during World War II. Landing in Marseilles, France on October 20, 1944 and seeing action throughout France and Germany until the war ended in Europe. This service of his country earned him numerous commendations and the love and respect of all his family and friends. After World War II, "Jim", as he was called by all who knew and loved him, devoted himself to his wife Mary and son Vinnie. While enriching the lives of all those lucky enough to spend time with him, Jim managed to accomplish a successful business career. Through hard work, he became a thriving business owner who at one time in his career owned and managed three barber shops in midtown Manhattan. Associating with many of the "rich and famous" of New York City, Jim never veered from his humble roots. After a career that spanned over 40 years, Jim and his wife Mary moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to enjoy the beauty and warmth of the Southwest and join their son Vinnie and family. Survived by his son Vincent and wife Terry; granddaughter Carina Brunton and husband Don Brunton; niece Joyce Romano and husband Michael; and nephew Charlie Carlino and wife Anna; and honorary son Steve Leonette. Jim will be laid to rest with Mary at the Veterans Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

SIMMONS -- Audrey Casey Simmons, 89, long time resident of Albuquerque, born May 25, 1921 in Yantis, TX, died on February 20, 2011 at her home with family by her side. She is survived by her children, Eileen Casey Cook, Janet Stoumbos, Craig Harrison Casey and wife Pamela, and Keith Wayne Casey and wife Dorothy; step-children, Joyce Aker and husband Marlin, Malissa Golf and husband Gary, Neil Simmons and wife Christie, and daughter in spirit, Angie Sanchez Carder; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, and numerous extended family members. Audrey was preceded in death by two husbands Kenneth Craig Casey and Henry C. Simmons, and by grandson, Sean Cordova. Audrey was born the youngest of 6 daughters to C.H. and Callie Slatten. She always talked of her fond memories of growing up on the family farm in East Texas. She attended East Texas State in Commerce, TX and earned a Bachelor of Science degree. Audrey started her teaching career in Winsboro, TX. She married Kenneth in 1944 and they later moved to Albuquerque where he was stationed at KAFB. Audrey retired from Albuquerque Public Schools in 1978 after many years of service including her time teaching at both Madison and McKinley Junior High Schools. In her "golden years" she married long time family friend Henry Simmons. They resided in Estancia, NM until his death in 1993. Audrey was very active in Netherwood Park Church of Christ and she considered her fellow church members to be family. She was known for her gentle and caring demeanor, and her beautiful smile was her trademark - a smile that will be missed by all. TORRES -- Dora Mae Torres, age 76, entered the Kingdom of Heaven on Sunday, February 20, 2011 surrounded by her family after a valiant battle with cancer. Well known for her strong work ethic, she checked groceries for Safeway/Furrs for more than 25 years and threw a paper route for the Albuquerque Journal for 12 years and was Carrier of the Year in 1995. After retiring, she was caretaker to her in-laws Don and Alvina Dalton. She cherished church, family, friends, beloved pets and her community. She never knew a stranger and had a smile for everyone. She is survived by her soul mate and beloved husband of 43 years, Hugo Torres; daughters, Mary Beth and husband Don Tidwell, Debbie and husband Ted Junkes, Rebecca and husband Dan Gomez; granddaughters, Malynda and husband Ian Cappelle, Andrea and husband Glen White, Sara Junkes, Jillian Junkes, and Jessica Gomez; great-grandsons, Isaiah Barela and Nathan White; sister, June and husband Jim Thompson; brother, Henry and wife Sandie Powell.
