BERES -- Felician Franciscan, Sister Marilyn Beres, 90, passed away at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Provincial House on Saturday, May 9, 2009. Born in North Chicago, Illinois on December 20, 1918 the daughter of Nicholas and Mary Suchta Beres. She was baptized Sophie. In 1933, she entered Waukegan Township High School but left her studies in order to care for her ill mother. In 1937, she joined the Felician Sisters of the Mother of Good Counsel Province in Chicago and resumed her High School studies along with the formation program. Sister ministered as a teacher from 1939 to 1943, and then began her studies in the nursing field. In 1948, she began her work as a nurse in Centralia, IL, and in 1950, was assigned to Corning, IA, as nurse and X-ray technician. For the next several years she alternated her ministry as teacher or nurse in TX, KS, IA, OK, and NE. Her favorite years were spent in Bethany, OK, at Our Lady of Victory Clinic, working with young mothers and infants. In 1977, Sister Marilyn requested to return to the Mother of Good Counsel Province in Chicago where she had entered and remained there for two years. In June of 1979, she returned to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Province in Rio Rancho, NM, where she served as a nurse in the infirmary and assisted with the catechetical program at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Alameda, NM. In 1987, Sister Marilyn returned to the provincial house in Rio Rancho where she engaged in various internal ministries. In 2004, when deteriorating health would no longer permit the active ministry, Sister Marilyn began her final years of "Prayer Ministry." Sister spent most of her time in prayer for the various requests that came to the sisters and for the needs of the world. She also maintained contact with the many friends she had made through the years. Those who knew her well will remember her for her kindness and compassion.
