BARELA -- Melba Sanchez Barela passed away on Thursday the 29 of January 2009 at the age of 93. She was born on the 20 of March 1915 to Raymundo and Ramoncita Sanchez in Tajique, New Mexico. She is preceded in death by her mother and father; stepfather, Florencio Zamora; her husband, Estolano Barela; her son, Ray Barela; daughters, Emilia, Theresa and Claudina Barela; her granddaughter, Emily Trevino; sisters, Cruzita Zamora, Eloisa Otero, Frances Barela, Maria Mora; and brother, Nestor Zamora. She is survived by her daughters, Dora Saiz, Ramona Moya, Leonella Trevino, Dolores Garcia and husband, Lawrence, Viola Chavez and husband, Steve Chavez; son, Jose Orlando Barela; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren; sisters, Bertha, Flora and Vita; and brother, Romulo. A Rosary will be recited on Sunday evening, February 1, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. at St. Therese Catholic Church. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 2, 2009 also at St. Therese Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. DAVIDSON -- Sharon deKeyser Davidson Sharon passed away peacefully in Albuquerque on her 98th birthday, completing the full circle of a life well lived. Born in Amsterdam, Holland on January 24, 1911, she and her family emigrated to California in 1923. Sharon attended schools in Los Angeles and married her first husband, John deKeyser, there. He established a prestigious music store in which Sharon also worked for a number of years. After her husband died, she moved to Albuquerque to be with her daughter, son-in-law and grandson, as family was of great importance to her. She later married DeWitt Davidson, an accomplished travel writer, with whom she travelled extensively and enjoyed seeing the world together. He passed away in 2008. Sharon was self-sacrificing, very caring, fearless, tenacious and a positive thinker who sought to do good wherever she could. She was masterful at crossword puzzles, knowledgeable about classical music, a capable organist and pianist, as well as talented in graphic arts. She especially loved the music of Bach and twentieth-century composers. Sharon is survived by her daughter, Joanna deKeyser; her sister, Helen Whelan; grandson, Shanti Randall; great-granddaughters, Adriana Tixier Randall and Malia Fritsch; nieces, Cathy Kurvers, Barbara Hoelsher and Karen Brunelle; nephews, Dan and Pat Whelan. She also had many friends who will not soon forget her kind heart and positive spirit. In accordance with Sharon's wishes, cremation has taken place. At some future time, there will be a private family celebration of her life. DUNN -- Theresa "Terry" Dunn, 67, of Albuquerque, passed away on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 after a courageous battle with Huntington's Disease. She is survived by a sister, Jean Dunn and life partner, Bill Cooper; a brother, Richard and wife, Marilyn Dunn; a nephew, Steven Dunn and a niece, Nannette Bradberry; twin great-nieces and a great-nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Margaret Dunn, and a brother, John Scott Dunn. Terry moved to New Mexico in 1963 and quickly took root in the Land of Enchantment. She was a registered nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital for over 25 years. Upon retirement, she continued to volunteer at St. Joseph's Hospital and at the Albuquerque Little Theater. She was a sports fanatic, always pulling for her favorite teams, Notre Dame and the New York Yankees. Terry's memory will continue to be a part of the Friday night happy hour with a very special, longtime group of friends. A private memorial service will be given by her friends at a later date. ELLIS -- Margaret (Peggy) Ellis was born August 16, 1923 in Kirksville, Missouri. She was the daughter of John H. Blu and Mabel Rose Blu. She graduated from Shortridge High School in 1941 in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1945, she earned a B.S. in elementary education from Butler University, also in Indianapolis. She was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. While at Butler, she met her husband to be, Harry D. Ellis, Jr., her sorority sister, Anita Ellis Dold's brother. They were married October 28, 1945. Peggy was a homemaker and beloved mother of seven children. She was an avid bridge player and was active in the St. Vincent Hospital Auxiliary for several years. She also volunteered for the Meals on Wheels program in Albuquerque. She especially loved singing in the church choir. Peggy lived the last year and a half at The Woodmark Uptown, where she met many wonderful friends and developed a passion for playing bingo. She loved her grandchildren and helped take care of them. Peggy was the matriach of her beloved Christ Community Fellowship. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her sister Betty. She is survived by her brother, Dr. Robert E. Blu of Littleton, Colorado. In addition, she is survived by her seven children, Julie Phillips of Boulder, CO (Wayne) and John Ellis of Atlanta, GA, as well as Marcia Russell (Tim), Hank Ellis, Susan Menicucci (Mark), Penny McAlister, and Betsy Womack (Tom), all of Albuquerque. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. HAYES -- Everett G. Hayes passed away on Monday, January 19, 2009. He was born on Saturday, March 11, 1916, in New Haven, CT and was raised in both New Haven and Bethany, CT. He is survived by his wife, Amelia; two sons, Robert Hayes and Jack Hayes; one daughter, Christine Duncan; and two grandchildren, Sarah and Jamie Duncan, all of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Carol Ann Hayes. Everett was employed by the Telephone Company in CT until 1942, when he joined the U.S. Army. He entered the Aviation Cadets, graduating in 1942 from the June class of 43F as a 2nd Lt. Pilot. Everett flew to England in a B-24 Bomber and completed 30 combat missions with the 446th Bomb Group as a co-pilot/pilot over Germany. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and four Air Medals. Everett then returned to the States, becoming a B-24 instructor pilot. He then joined the Ferry Command and flew B-24s, B-25s, A-26s, P-47s, P-51s, P-63s, and P-40s within the States. After leaving active duty in 1945, he earned a commercial single/multi-engine instructors rating and taught flying. He continued to serve in the Army Reserves until the late 1950's, resigning as a major. Everett married the love of his life, Amelia Kollins in 1947. He flew her over Manhattan from Connecticut in his open cockpit Stearman in 1946. In 1947, they drove to Albuquerque where Everett enrolled at the University of New Mexico, graduating in 1952 as a mechanical engineer. He was then hired as a staff engineer at Sandia National Laboratories and retired from there 29 years later, in 1981. Throughout his retirement, he enjoyed traveling throughout the country in his motor home with Amelia, and camping on his 15 acre mountain property, 26 miles east of Albuquerque. Everett loved to listen to Johnny Cash. Everett was a kind man, the consummate family man, and the best husband, father, and grandfather that anyone could ever have. We didn't want him to leave us but we know he will be safe in the arms of our Lord. We will all miss him very much. Services will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, 11:00 a.m., at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 9100 Menaul Blvd. NE. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery. MCATEE -- William Harris McAtee, 74, recently passed away at home. "Papa Bill" was born and raised in Mingo, West Virginia, and he was Valedictorian of Tygart Valley High School. After two years pursuing his engineering degree at West Virginia University, he joined the United States Army, serving three years in the Signal Corps in Alaska during the Korean War. He then continued his education in Kansas City at Central Technical Institute, where he received his Associates Degree in Electronics after graduating 1st in his class. He was then hired by Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, where he worked for 31 years. While at Sandia, Bill worked on projects related to nuclear energy, including the Saturn and Hermes III projects. He also worked on solar energy projects, and was one of the original operators of the Solar Tower. When not working, Bill could usually be found at Arroyo Del Oso Golf Course, where he pursued his love of golf. His friends will remember his love of family, his lifelong interest in learning new things, and his integrity. His word was his bond. Papa Bill is survived by his son, Greg; daughter-in-law, Jody; and grandsons, Colin and Blake of Del Mar, CA; and his sister, Mary Alice McAtee of Elkins, WV. MILLER -- Arthur T. Miller, 80, passed through those eternal gates to be greeted by the love of his life Sarah Lucille on Thursday, January 29, 2009. Art was born November 15, 1928 the son of Arthur John and Minnie Mae Fairy Miller in Gilman, Wisconsin. Art retired from Mountain Bell after 18 years. He is survived by four children, Jessie Muller, Sarah and Ron Anderson, Mary and Lee Stevens, Linda and Ken Moroney; one sister, Mary Norton; 25 grandchildren; 52 great grandchildren; 32 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. MONTAGUE-IZARD -- Helen Inez Montague-Izard, 79, passed away surrounded by family on Monday, January 26, 2009, in Albuquerque. Born in Plainview, TX to Eddie and Vivian Montague, Helen grew up in the Plainview, TX and Coffeyville, KS areas. After high school, she moved to Albuquerque in the late 1940's where she worked as a switchboard operator. Helen moved on to Los Angeles in the 1950's where she worked as an Office Manager in a law firm. She married the late Jay Hudnall and had two daughters, Penelope and Wesley. In the late 1970's, she moved to the San Francisco Bay area, but eventually returned to Albuquerque in 1991. Shortly thereafter, she met Lew Izard , and they were married in 1999. Helen was an avid golfer, and a member of the Woodland Hills Women's Golf Association, and later the Four Hills Women's Golf Association. Helen was very outgoing, made friends wherever she went, and loved dancing. She also loved to travel, especially to California to see her grandson, Wyatt. Helen is survived by her husband Lew Izard; daughter Wesley Hudnall and her husband Christopher Dean; grandson Wyatt Dean; brothers Bob and Tom Montague, and sister Susan Smith; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews who live throughout the Coffeyville, KS and Portales, NM areas. Helen was predeceased by her daughter Penelope on January 5, 2009. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A private celebration of Helen's life will be held at a later date. PADILLA -- Amado "Grandpy" Padilla, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather, passed away at his granddaughter's home in Albuquerque on Thursday, January 29, 2009. Born in Pajaritos, Albuquerque, NM on May 12, 1918, Amado, 90, led a long and productive life in New Mexico. He was very proud of his service to his country, serving in the US Army from 1941- 1945 during WWII. As a gunner Sergeant First Class, he was stationed in Europe, European Transportation of Operations, the Asiatic Pacific Theater in Alaska, and then joined the National Guard. As a lifetime member of the VFW, he was the commander of Post 401 in 1979 and received a Seam Squirrel-Cootie Award from the VFW. He was also a lifetime member of the DAV and American Legion. A devout member of the Catholic Church, he served as head usher at Queen of Heaven Parish for over forty years. He is predeceased by his parents, Higinio and Sotela Padilla. He was a devoted husband for almost 50 years to his wife, Theresa P. Padilla, who passed away in 1998. He is survived by his loving daughter, Mary Ann Carrillo; grandchildren, Debbie and her husband, Tim Williams, Darla and her husband, Ted Trujillo, Diana Carrillo and her boyfriend, Mark Dickmeyer, Denise Carillo, Robert Carillo, David Carillo, and Phyllis and her husband, Gerald Mullohan; great-grandchildren, Marvin Becker, Jr., Christopher Carillo, Brian Amado Williams, Bobby Carrillo, Mitchell Carrillo, Teddy Trujillo, Scott Mullohan, and Joy Mullohan; great-great-grandchild, Ariana Becker; and his dog, Ricki. SANCHEZ -- Joe Robert Sanchez, age 78, surrounded by his loved ones, was lifted up to heaven to join our Lord on Wednesday, January 28, 2009. He resided in Santa Rosa, New Mexico and Las Vegas, New Mexico for many years until his recent illness brought him to Albuquerque to be close to his family. He was born on July 6, 1930 in Anton Chico, New Mexico to Adelaido and Angela Sanchez. During his 35 year career as an educator, Joe Robert served the Las Vegas area Retiree Educators Association as both President and Vice-President. He earned a B.A. and M.A. degree from New Mexico Highlands University, with a B.A. degree with a major in Business Education, a minor in Social Studies, and his M.A. degree with a major in School Administration, a minor in Business Education at the secondary level. His teaching career began at the New Mexico Boy's School in Springer as a classroom teacher and also as a classroom teacher at Santa Rosa High School. Joe Robert retired from the West Las Vegas Schools where he served in several capacities, High School Principal, Armijo Elementary School Principal, Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent, Director of the Emergency School Assistance Act, classroom teacher at Trementina Elementary School, and Director of the Head Start Program. Joe Robert was an active member of several professional organizations including NEA New Mexico, Council for the Improvement of Education, P.T.A. Classroom Teachers Association, and Head Start Association. He also served as chairman of the Community Development Institute Board of Directors, Vice-Chairman of NEA-NM Commission on School Legislation and Finance, Professional Practice and Ethics Commission, Region VI Head Start Board of Directors, and Luna Community College Board of Directors. A Korean War Veteran, Joe Robert served four years in the U. S. Air Force. He served overseas in Korea and Japan. He was also active in several civic and veterans' organizations, as well as a loyal member of the San Miguel Democratic Party. Joe Robert is survived by his wife, Mary Lou (Serrano); daughter, Marga of Albuquerque; Son, Phillip and wife Martha of Menlo Park, CA; two grandchildren, Nathan, and Erin; brothers and sisters, Luis G. Sanchez and wife Maria Teresa, Jose G. Sanchez and wife Elizabeth, Max R. Sanchez and wife Annadelle, Daniel Sanchez, Martina Cordova, Vivian L. Sanchez, Adeline S. Chavez and husband Dan, and Patricia M. Sanchez; Brothers and sisters-in-law, Petra Sanchez, Marie Ozila Ortega and husband Eric, Loretta Campos, and Gilbert Campos, Eddie Serrano and wife Camilla, and Pamela McCue; numerous nieces and nephews will all miss their Uncle Robert. Joe Robert was a loving and compassionate person to all he encountered through his journey in life. The many lives he touched, especially his immediate family, are richly blessed, and his memories remain to comfort us until we meet again. SCHWEITZER -- Dorothy E. Schweitzer, 84, of Albuquerque, passed away on Wednesday, January 28, 2009. She is survived by special friend and companion of 27 years, Gerald Brandt and many friends. Dorothy and Gerald were very close, having traveled to some of their favorite places many times over the years. She had worked for Sandia National Lab for 37 years before retiring. Dorothy loved to dance and won many awards for her efforts. TIMMONS -- Lily Gottlieb, 89, passed away January 28, 2009. Lily was born in Alsenz, Germany, on March 30, 1919. She immigrated with her family in 1938. She loved living in New Mexico and the Sandia Mountains. Lily retired as Executive Director of the Multiple Sclerosis Society after 26 years, she served many terms as president of the Edelweiss German American Club, was active with Beta Sigma Phi Laureate Delta Chapter and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She was proceeded in death by her husband Herman "Tim". Lily is survived by daughters, Denise Bachis, husband Nick, Stephanie May (granddaughter, who was like a daughter), husband Tim, Diane Lovato, husband Ernie; brother Hans Gottlieb, wife Joanne; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 1, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 300 Gold Ave. SE with Pastor Randy Walquist officiating. WINN -- Joyce V. Winn was born March 22, 1944,and peacefully passed away in her sleep January 27, 2009. She is survived by her fiance, James Martinez; her sons, Dennis Winn, wife, Becky w/grandchildren, Sydney and Zachary, David Winn, Dwayne Winn, wife, Francine and family, Donald Winn, wife, Donna w/grandchild, Emerald; her father, R.E.Stover; sister, JoAnne McClellen husband, Jim; sister-in-law, Colleen Stover; many nieces and nephews and other loved ones. She is preceded in death by her mother, Lela Stover; brothers, Kenneth and Jack Stover. Joyce was always trying to figure out how she could make the ones closest to her happy and will be missed by everyone that knew her. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at Mountain View Cemetery in Moriarty, NM Saturday, January 31 at 1:00 pm.
