ANDERSON -- LaVerne Caroline Witte Anderson, 86, of Albuquerque, died November 6, 2008 after a sudden illness. She was blessed to have been surrounded by family and loved ones as she was peacefully taken into the hands of the Lord. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Robert E. Anderson; her five children, Kirk Anderson, Greg Anderson and his wife Cindy, Richard Anderson, Marjo Garlach and husband Steve, and Paul Anderson; and her grandchildren, Ryan, Kyle, Travis, Katie, Bryan, and Peter. She is also survived by her sister, Phyllis McDill; and two brothers, Earl "Joe" Witte and his wife Bert and Carl "Pete" Witte and his wife Betty; and more than 23 Witte nieces and nephews, and one Anderson niece, and two nephews. She is predeceased by her brothers Dale Witte and Glen Witte; her younger sister Dorothy Whetstine; and two nephews Rob Witte and Mark Witte. She was born June 9, 1922 in Friend, NE to Augsta and Herman Witte. LaVerne and her four brothers and two sisters grew up in the ranching country of the South Dakota badlands and in Chadron, NE. Always and forever being first devoted to her Catholic faith, she lived a full active life. During World War II, she worked as a riveter in an airplane factory and endured the loss of her older brother, Glen who was a Navy aviator. She earned her baccalaureate in English Education from Chadron State College and taught school in numerous places including California, Hawaii, and Wyoming. While in Wyoming, she met the love of her life Bob and they married on June 14, 1952. Their careers took them to several towns before moving to Albuquerque in 1963. She taught eighth grade English and Literature at Jefferson Middle School from 1963 to 1983. Upon her retirement, she devoted her time to her family and became an active member in several organizations. She was an active member and past president of the Uptown Garden Club, a member of the Ikebana Club, and past President of the Delta Kappa Gamma teacher's sorority. She was loved by many friends and neighbors. ANTONE -- Joan S. Antone, age 72, a life time resident of Torreon, NM, a beloved mother, grandmother, and sister, was called home to be with the Lord, Thursday, November 6, 2008. She was preceded in death by a son, Anthony Willis Antone; and by her parents, Augustine and Ruby T. Sandoval. Joan is survived by her loving children, Virgil Antone and wife Karen of Edison, NJ, Willie Antone, Jr. of Albuquerque, Jamela Antone of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Valerie Antone of Torreon, NM, Muzzie Atencio, and Victoria Antone both of Albuquerque; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene Sandoval and Alice Rico; and numerous relatives and friends in New Mexico and Arizona. ARCHIE -- Arlee Session Archie, age 82, went to be with her lord on November 7, 2008. Arlee was born July1, 1926 in Bynum, Texas, to Elbert and Ella Mae Gibson Robinson. ARMSTRONG -- Victor Mathew Armstrong, 68, loving husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend quietly passed away on November 6, 2008. Vic was born March 11, 1940 to Victor and Maxine Armstrong. He married the love of his life, Margie, on December 19, 1958. His death falls just short of their 50th Anniversary. He is survived by his wife Margie; sister Marte Denman; children Debbie Moyer, Scott Armstrong; five grandchildren Justin and Skylar Moyer, Ryan, Austin, and Cole Armstrong. Vic worked in the food service industry for 30 years of his life where he was very well liked and respected. He loved nothing better than spending time at Lake Powell with his family, friends, and dog. Vic had a profound love for his family, animals, and music. He will be remembered for his kind heart, quick smile, sincere willingness to help, and his sense of humor that was with him to the very end. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial contributions to the Presbyterian Heart Program, or the U.N.M. Cancer Research Center. ARRIGHETTI -- Lawrence F. Arrighetti, 87, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque passed away Monday, November 10, 2008. He is survived by five children, Rusty Arrighetti and wife, Michele, Richard Arrighetti and wife, Tina, Arlene Keeter, all of Albuquerque, Arlette Geffert and husband, Jim of Charleston, SC, and Wes Arrighetti and wife, Trisha of Pagosa Springs, CO; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Rains of Albuquerque, and Penny Stephens of Los Lunas; and many friends. Lawrence was a longtime business owner in the liquor industry in Albuquerque and San Juan County. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved sharing that with his family. BACA -- John Martin Baca a resident of Albuquerque passed away at home on November 9, 2008. Mr. Baca is survived by his children Josephine Garcia and husband, Allen, Janet Romero and Paul Romero, and Martin Baca and fiance, Ernestine Chavez; mother of his children, Gloria Hudspeth; eight grandchildren, Gabriel Garcia, Shawntel Romero, Brianna Romero, Amber Baca, Michael Romero, Priscilla Pedroncelli, Charlie Pedroncelli, and Desiree Pedroncelli; and many other extended family members. Mr. Baca was preceded in death by his parents, Arsenio and Jesusita Baca. JONES -- Darlene Herrera Jones was born November 1, 1972. She went to join her grandma on November 5, 2008 at the age of 36. MARES -- Joe L. "Pops" Mares, 73, a lifelong resident of New Mexico, passed away at his home, with his loving family by his side, Friday, November 7, 2008. Mares and wife Maggie; grandchildren Natasha Nieberger and husband Ken, Justin Ulrich, Rachel L. Sena and husband Nick, Nicole Jones and husband Jason, Matthew Torres, Mark "Little Markie" Mares, Matthew R. Mares, Martina Mares; great-grandchildren Rosalee, Tara (en route), Debra, Sharon, Ken, Jr., Curtis, Carlos, Damien, Joseph "Little Joe", Destiny, Josh; sisters Eula Martinez, Gloria Olson and husband Gary, Neoma Castallanos and husband Frank, Lucy Fiore and husband Dave; brother Orlando Mares and wife Lois; and a large, extended family. Joe grew up in Tucumcari where he had a lot of family. He lived and worked as a baker in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 20 years before returning to New Mexico. His greatest joys were his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also had a passion for sports. MCWATTERS -- W.D. "Doug" McWatters, age 70,of Rio Rancho, passed away on Friday, November 7, 2008. He was a member of plumbers and pipefitters local union 412 for over 50 years. He was a lifetime member of the NRA and an active volunteer with the Sandoval County Sheriff's department. MIRANDA -- Neffie J. Miranda, 83, passed away on November 08, 2008. Neffie was born to Magdelena and Santiago Miranda on December 13, 1924, in Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico. He is a long time resident of Albuquerque, NM. Neffie is survived by one son, Patrick J. Miranda; four daughters, Linda Silva, Martha Mobley, Geraldine Saavedra, and Patricia Johnston and her husband Frank; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Chris Miranda and his wife Dora; three sisters, Isabel Miranda, Elisa Trujillo, and Ramona Stone. Neffie was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 43 years, Trudy Miranda who went to be with the Lord on January 24, 2006; his son, Neffie Miranda Jr. He loved gardening, camping, fishing, and horse racing, owning a thoroughbred horse. MITCHELL -- David Alan Mitchell, 54, stepped into eternity in the arms of Jesus early Friday morning, November 7, 2008. David leaves behind his daughter, Christie Black (Ryan); son, Bradley; his mother, Joy; brother, Mike (Debbie); many nieces and nephews; former wife of 22 years, Stephanie; and a host of friends and business associates. David was born in La Junta, CO, and his family moved to Amarillo, TX, prior to arriving in Albuquerque when David was 12. He graduated from Sandia High School in 1972, received his BA from UNM in 1976 and his MBA from UNM in 1993. David became a CPA in 1977 when he passed all portions of the exam on his first attempt. He spent his first six professional years with Peat, Marwick & Mitchell (KPMG). He subsequently was the COO and Senior Vice President at Sunwest Financial Services, executive VP with Santa Fe Racing, Inc., and worked with R.D. Hubbard Enterprises, Inc., in Kansas City before moving to Las Vegas, NV, to become the Senior VP of Caesars World, Inc. for 5 years. Shortly after, David became executive VP and CFO of the Maloof Group of Companies, during which time the Palms Casino Resort was built. Following that, he became the executive VP and Managing Director overseeing the development, construction and opening of the Sands Macao in Macao, China. David returned to Albuquerque in 2004 and pursued many other entrepreneurial interests. At the time of his death, he was in the process of acquiring an accounting firm in Farmington. He was also a Lobo fan no matter where he lived in the world and a member of the Lobo Club. Over the years, he'd also served on the board of the NM Symphony, Boys and Girls Club of Albuquerque, and the Albuquerque Little Theatre. PARZYCK -- Dr. Thomas E. Parzyck, 58, died on Saturday, November 8, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Beverly and their son, Christopher. RAEL -- Barbarita Rael, 58, was called home to the Lord on Thursday, November 6, 2008 surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was born on April 27 1950. She is preceded in death by her parents Federico and Escolastica Rael, Enrique and Barbarita Salas. Brothers Leo, Libby, Eddie, Harry and sister, Candelaria. She is survived by her brother Freddie Salas and wife Toni and Gilfred; sisters Jenny, Esther, Bertha, and Cora. SANCHEZ -- Dennis Sanchez was born July 17, 1934 in Las Nutrias, NM. He passed away Friday, November 7, 2008 at the age of 74. Dennis was a lifelong barber in Albuquerque, on 10th and Central, and also in the South Valley. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Corina Sanchez; his sister, Gloria Jean Saks and his wife, Helen Sanchez. He is survived by his sons, Richard L. Sanchez and wife Ida, Bobby J. Sanchez and wife Karlene; granddaughters, Denise, Reina, Alicia, Brandi and Rachel Sanchez; his loved brothers and sisters, as well as many dear friends and family members who loved and will miss him. SANDOVAL -- Rose Erlinda Sandoval, 65, went to be with our Lord on Sunday. She was predeceased by her husband of 25 years, Ernest Sandoval, Sr. Rose is survived by her husband, Gilbert G. Sanchez; children, Deborah Gonzales and husband, Roy, Ernest Sandoval and wife, Lanetta, Dave Sandoval and wife, Lydia, Carlos Sandoval and wife, Josefina, Aaron Sandoval and wife, Maria; brothers, Ruben, Rufus, Henry and Gilbert Salazar; sisters, Mary (Carrie) Saavedra, Vickie Vega; Adela Sanchez, Irene Marquez, Rita Henry; grandchildren, Monica Rose, Christine and husband Jorge, Celia, Christian, Ernest III, Mary Rose, Daniel, Carlos, Alejandro, David, Marques, Selina, Tiffany, Alex, Aaron Jr.; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Christopher, Elena; Patsy, Dela and several other nieces and nephews. SMALLEY -- Dorothy Marie Orth Faith I've been on the hilltop Where air was clean and life was good. Anything was possible And I had faith. I've been in the valley Where shadows crept in Where footsteps faltered And so did faith. Yet this I know God was, and is! I'm the one who doubted and strayed And God forgave time and again. Dorothy Marie Smalley Our cherished mother, grandmother, sister, mother-in-law, aunt and friend, Dorothy M. Smalley died peacefully on Sunday, November 9, 2008. She was born in St. Joseph, MO on October 26, 1915 to Bernhardt Augustus Orth and Lillian Marie Worman Orth. She graduated from Central High School, St. Joseph, MO, and from St. Joseph Junior College - now Missouri Western State University. Mrs. Smalley was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, John H. Smalley, Sr., in October 1978. Mr. and Mrs. Smalley were married on August 12, 1938 in St. Joseph, MO and made Albuquerque their home after relocating here in 1958 from West Virginia so John could begin a long and rewarding career with Sandia National Labs. Mrs. Smalley is survived by her sons John H. Smalley, Jr., and his wife Pat of Colchester, CT, Stephen Smalley of Renton, WA, Michael Smalley and his wife Victoria of Albuquerque; a sister, Bennie Orth Hensley of CA; three grandchildren, John H. Smalley III of TX, Eric Smalley of CO, and Zoe Smalley of AL; three great-grandchildren; brother-in-law James W. Smalley and wife Georgia of WVA., and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Smalley was a member of La Mesa Presbyterian Church for many years, and was active in choir and the women's Circle group. She volunteered in the gift shops of Anna Kaseman hospital for approximately 12 years, and Palo Duro Senior Center for approximately 15 years. Mrs. Smalley loved working in her yards, growing roses and making latch hook wall hangings. Our family would like to thank everyone with Presbyterian Hospice for their kind care of our Mom, and their support of our family - especially Jonell, Patsy and Brenda, and Presbyterian Home Health - especially Evelyn. Also a special thanks to the Alzheimer's Association. Graveside services will be Thursday, November 13, 2008 at the Santa Fe National Cemetery, the time is still pending. UMSTEAD -- Vida A. Umstead, age 78, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on Wednesday, November 5, 2008. She is survived by her husband William C. Umstead; son William R. J. Umstead; son Matthew Umstead and wife Barbara; grandchildren Sean, Amanda, and Cassandra Umstead; sister Antonia Montiel of France; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Filomena Martinez Jimenez and her brother, Francisco Martinez. Vida was born on March 9, 1930, in Casablanca, Morocco.
