MITCHELL -- Walter Mitchell III Walter "Mitch" Mitchell died on October 16, 2008 as a result of injuries sustained in a fall near his home in Albuquerque, NM. He was 49 years old. After graduation from Dunwoody High School in Atlanta, GA. and a short stint at Ga. Tech, Mitch enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He finished first in his class and accepted shore duty at the Pt. Mugu Naval Air Weapons Station in Southern California, developing the then-secret, futuristic new F-18 Hornet fighter. He served with distinction in his capacity as a Plane Captain, and earned his Honorable Discharge in 1985. Afterwards, he enrolled at the University of Georgia where he received a bachelor's degree in Psychology, graduated Cum Laude and was listed in "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities". His interest in aviation was lifelong. He had his pilot's license, and was an active member of a global, remarkably close-knit cadre of individuals who are each engaged in the construction of a classic wooden biplane design called the "Flitzer". Mitch had made substantial progress on his aircraft, incorporating numerous design modifications to accommodate his 6'5" frame and contributing significantly to the group engineering process. Mitch was a most unusual fellow, a sharp wit, an excellent writer, a gifted electro-mechanical engineer and craftsman, and a dedicated advocate for the less fortunate. He served on the Board of Directors of the local anti-police brutality activist organization New Mexico Vecinos United. His friends have described him as "brilliant" and "chivalrous", the latter characteristic well illustrated by the following story: several years ago, his parents sent him a check for $1000 to help him out with some unexpected medical expenses. On his way to deposit the check at the bank, he came across a legless man on the sidewalk, begging for food. Touched by the man's plight, he went to the bank, cashed the check for 50 crisp new $20 bills, went back outside and handed the roll of bills to the astonished man. This was Mitch's brand of chivalry, and it was not an isolated instance. Mitch's body was cremated at the French Mortuary in Albuquerque. His mother, brother and several dear friends carried his remains to a wilderness preserve near the Rio Grande river, where they returned him to earth, spreading his ashes at the base of a cottonwood tree. His brother placed a number of Mitch's small possessions upon the site, and after covering him with beautiful leaves and stones, his friends and relatives said a few words and left him at peace. Surviving are his parents, Evelyn Edge Mitchell and Walter Mitchell, Jr. of Dunwoody, GA.; his brother David Mitchell, David's wife Amanda, and their son Colin, Mitch's nephew, of Washington, DC.
