KINGSTON -- Arthur Kingston Funeral Services for Arthur Kingston will be Friday, October 3, 2008 at First Baptist Church in Carlsbad, NM, at 2:00 p.m. Dr. Brian Taylor, Spiritual Leader of Temple Beth El will be presiding. Interment will follow at the Carlsbad Cemetery with military honors being performed by the Carlsbad Veteran's Honor Guard. Masonic graveside services will be performed by Eddy Lodge #21 AF&AM. West Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements. Arthur Kingston was born December 17, 1919, in Karlshafen, Germany to Isadore and Franziska Koenigsthal. Fearing for his safety during the Holocaust his parents sent Arthur to stay with relatives in Carlsbad in 1937. He was a mere 17 years old and knew no English, yet he immediately went to work at Bryan's Grocery. When he became fluent in English, he moved to Roswell to work for Safeway. It was not long before he was able to move to El Paso and manage the Safeway meat market. Arthur reported for Army service in January of 1942 when he was 22 years old. During his four years of service he attained the rank of T-4 Surgical Technician and Unit Interpreter. He assisted in over 1,000 serious surgeries while in his Mobil Army Surgical Hospital Unit and served as an interpreter of General Patton. He received WWII awards and medals for Normandy (Omaha Beach), Northern France Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), ETO with Silver Star, Presidential Unit Citation, American Defense Medal, Good Conduct, and Victory. After service he returned to Carlsbad and continued his trade as a butcher. On July 4, 1948 he married Berta and enjoyed fireworks in Carlsbad ever since. During his lifetime Arthur had many careers. He owned and operated his restaurant, Art's Delicatessen on Fox Street across from the Court House. Later, he managed the Apache Canyon Trading Post for 10 years. The most rewarding occupation Arthur had was working for Carlsbad Municipal Schools as Food Services Director. Although considered work by most, Art enjoyed nothing more than providing nutritious meals to students attending Carlsbad Schools. He proudly served as Food Service Director from 1968 to 1985. After he retired he volunteered for many community organizations including the American Red Cross, Community Concert Association, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In 1990 Arthur, along with his wife Berta, was awarded Carlsbad's most prestigious award, the A. J. Crawford Humanitarian Award. Arthur was an active member of the Elk's Lodge 1558, VFW 3277, DAV 13, Eddy Masonic Lodge #21 AF&AM and was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. Arthur Kingston passed away Monday, September 29, 2008, at Carlsbad Medical Center. Arthur is survived by his only child Bill of Carlsbad; four grandchildren Daniel Jeffrey and wife Leslie, Jordan, Alexandra, and Taylor; all of Albuquerque. Arthur was a very proud great-grandfather of Cooper and Dawson. As Arthur felt flowers are for the living, please make any gestures of sympathy to the Carlsbad Foundation or any other local charity of your preference.

LOGSDON -- Loretta Kay Logsdon alias "Grandma Chili", 72, went on her final "Happy Trail" to be with her Lord and Savior on September 27, 2008 after a brief battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Bill Logsdon; her four children, daughter Shirley Griffin (Jaimie) of Colorado Springs, CO; son Curt Logsdon (Teresa) of Woodland Park, CO; daughter Ronnie Young (Kirk) of Woodland Park, CO; daughter Vonna West (Mark) of Albuquerque, NM. She leaves behind 11 grand-children Renee, Lena, Jaimie Leigh, Michelle, Chad, Elusha, Kenny, Josh, Melissa, Randy and Justin; along with four great-grandchildren: Maven, Daniel, Shayleigh and Jamison. She is survived by two sisters, Carole Smith of Poncha Springs, CO and Georgia Sciacca of Hoehne, CO. Loretta was preceded in death by her parents Linn and Florence Zolman; and her brothers Ted Zolman and Jim Zolman. Being the true heart of the west, Loretta Logsdon lit the hearts and imaginations of many. She was Roy Roger's biggest fan, the most enthusiastic collector of all things new and exciting, and always made the best pot of both red and green chili for miles around which is where she gained the name "Grandma Chili". Loretta will be remembered by all using one simple word: FUN! She brought joy, life, and adventure to all she met and all she did. As a fanatic collector, she took most of her family on wild goose chases finding beanie babies and anything else that struck her fancy. And for holidays, such as the Fourth of July, she would be the one sporting the most flashing-lighted patriotic necklaces and spinning headbands. "Grandma Chili", a member of the International Chili Society, also held numerous awards, trophies, and honors for her famous 'Holy Smoke' chili and salsa. She had a heart for yodeling and ice skating. Even more important, she had a heart for her family. She was a devoted wife, and loving mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great- grandmother and friend. She served her husband faithfully as both companion and business partner for 54 years. Her greatest joys in life were the moments she spent with her family around a camp fire in the mountains, watching her grandchildren either at ice skating rinks, basketball courts, football fields or next to a tree at Christmas. She never failed to give you her undivided attention and always made you feel as if you were the most special, most loved, and most talented person she had ever known. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. As "Grandma Chili" would say, 'Happy Trails to you, until we meet again'. Viewing will be from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 4 at Blake Road Baptist Church, 1704 Blake Road SW. Following the Viewing and visitation, the Memorial Service will begin at 12:00 noon. He was at home with Vicki, his wife of 51 years, and had spent the evening before having dinner with his children and grandchildren. Mike was a long-time resident of Albuquerque, NM, having moved here in 1958. He is survived by Vicki and his five children - Kelly White, Christopher Turpen, Shannon Horst, James Turpen, and Elizabeth Turpen. He also had 12 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Mike's dear sister, Carol Turpen Benson, is also a resident of Albuquerque, NM. Mike was born in Nashville, TN and grew up in Tennessee and Virginia. He and Vicki met at University of Kentucky, married and shortly after that moved to New Mexico. Mike and Vicky graduated together from UNM in 1969 - after all five of their children were born. Mike blessed the world with a beautiful tenor voice and sang the lead in many Albuquerque Civic Light Opera Association productions in the 1960s and early seventies. He spent his career working for Farmers Insurance Group, as an agent and District Manager, and retired after 43 years with the company five years ago. He and Vicky spent the last five years traveling the world - Europe, Africa and Latin America - and spending time with their children and grandchildren. Mike was an active, long-time member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, most recently serving a three year term as First Reader. He was a loving son, husband, father, brother, friend and colleague to many. Few men have blessed the world in so many ways. He often said that he was one of the most fortunate men in the world because he could count all of his children as his best friends. Friends of the family, church members and colleagues are invited to a celebration of his life on Friday, October 3, 2008 at 2 p.m. at El Nido Farm in the South Valley. Mike's request was that, instead of flowers, individuals donate to the charity of their choice. "I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly." (John 10:10)
