GOSNELL -- James L. (Jim) Gosnell A grand and noble man, James L. (Jim) Gosnell died April 8, 2008, at Highgate Senior Living in Billings, MT. As in life, he faced death with courage and his wonderful, dry wit. During his last days, when asked if he needed anything, he would always reply, "money." If one listened closely, this statement was followed by a slight chuckle. Jim was a tall, handsome, imposing man with the most striking blue eyes. Throughout his long and wonderful life, he loved beautiful women-his late wife Virginia (Gina) Kelly Gosnell, his daughter, Helen Gosnell MacKay and his only granddaughter, Kaitlin Kelly Gosnell Clarke-as well as fine horses and great dogs. He was born in Delmont PA, on May 4, 1920, to L.S. and Helen Hirsh Gosnell. He grew up in Latrobe, PA, where he attended schools until leaving to attend college at Case/Western Reserve in Cleveland, OH. He joined his father and his brother in the funeral business in Latrobe, PA, before moving to Ridgway, PA, to open his own funeral home. And fate and good fortune smiled on him. He met his to-be-wife, Gina, in her home town of Ridgway. Although romance blossomed, World War II demanded first attention from both of them. Jim enlisted in the United States Army on January 26, 1942, while Gina spent the war years in the WAVES in Washington, D.C. After basic training Jim went to North Africa where he spent the next year. Early in 1944, his unit was sent to Italy landing near Anzio as part of Operation Shingle. For the next year and a half, his unit fought their way to Bologne when the Germans finally surrendered. Expecting to be sent home, Jim's unit boarded a troop ship in Naples and traveled through the Panama Canal to the Philippines in preparation for the invasion of Japan. Though Japan surrendered in September 1945, Jim did not receive his discharge until December 1945. Then it was home to Ridgway where he married Gina on November 23, 1946. And their adventures and love affair consumed the next 61 years until Gina death in September 2007. Jim left the funeral business in 1950 and began his new career with RCA as a salesman. As in all things, Jim excelled at this work and was awarded with many advances. Many of the advancements caused family moves but also brought rewards as Jim and Gina escorted top retailers for RCA on trips to many foreign countries. Jim had a life long love of horses. He rode English on mostly American Saddlebred horses. He rode with great style and was awarded many trophies. After he and Gina moved to her family's farm in Elk County PA, the family enjoyed pleasure riding through wooded hills. Dogs also abounded. The family raised Dalmatians for a number of years and his special favorites were two named Kelly and Misty. In recent years, he and Gina adopted a pound puppy named Blue who now lives with Jim's daughter, Helen Gosnell MacKay, in Red Lodge. Blue was able to visit Jim often at Highgate. Through the years, Jim always loved fine cars and took excellent care of all vehicles. In all probability, he never drove a dirty car and prided himself in keeping all his rolling stock in tiptop condition. In 1984 Jim and Gina sold the family farm in Pennsylvania and made another home for themselves in Albuquerque, NM. Here they worked as volunteers for "Friends of the Library" and enjoyed exploring New Mexico. As health issues began to arise, Jim and Gina pulled up stakes once again and moved to Westpark Village in Billings to be near their daughter in Red Lodge. Together they hosted a private party to celebrate their 60th anniversary. As always, everyone else did most of the talking while Jim listened, observed and put in a succinct word here and there. Throughout his life, Jim was a quiet man who loved his small family deeply. His most priceless times were spent with Gina and his son and daughter. He never lost his love for fine horses, classic automobiles or good dogs. He also had a finely developed taste for good bourbon whiskey when the time was right! Grand, noble, caring and compassionate, Jim lived a full and wonderful life that will be celebrated by his son, Jim Gosnell of Salt Lake City, UT; his daughter, Helen Gosnell MacKay and special friend, Tony Duke of Red Lodge and his granddaughter, Kaitlin Kelly Gosnell Clarke, "Kate", and her husband Daniel Clarke of Dallas, TX. Joining the celebration will be all of those fortunate enough to have known this remarkable, handsome, quiet man with the striking blues eyes. Private Services have been held to place his ashes next to Gina's at Mountview Cemetery in Billings. To honor Jim's lifelong love for animals, memorials are suggested to the Beartooth Humane Alliance, P.O. Box 853, Red Lodge, MT 59068. JOHNSON -- Frances Johnson, born in Albion, Nebraska, November 15, 1915, grew up in a small farming community. During the Great Depression, she worked to help her family by teaching in a small one room schoolhouse. Busy working on a homecoming float, a gentleman appeared and announced, "I'm your carpenter". She and her carpenter, Harlan K. Johnson later wed. Tough times and World War II necessitated the couple travel where Harlan could find war work. A small family now, they criss-crossed the U.S. in a tiny teardrop trailer. After the war, the family moved to Grand Island, Nebraska where they gave up the trailer and moved into a house. Needless to say, the children wept bitter tears. Frances went on to earn a bachelor's degree in education while hosting a TV cooking show. She later gave up show business and taught school for 20 years. She and her "carpenter" traveled to and from Europe during school vacations. They finally made their permanent home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Frances was a long time member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church and remained active in the community. She tutored young people for many years, teaching them to read and write, one of her proudest contributions. Harlan preceded Frances in death in 1997. Frances' survivors include: sister, Marjorie Johnson of Newman Grove, NE; brother Bob Bittner and wife Ilene of Albion, NE; son, Gary K. Johnson and wife Marylyn of Franklinton, NC; daughter, Marilyn J. Wireman and husband Bill of Palm Springs, CA; daughter, Nancy L. STOCKMAN -- Sarah Arkell Stockman (Sally), a longtime resident of Four Hills, Albuquerque, died in the early afternoon of May 7, 2008, from lung cancer. Her husband, Hervey, was at her bedside. Her last days were under the gentle care of the staff at Lovelace Hospital and the love of her extended family. All who knew her adored her. Sally was born on January 16, 1923 in Canajoharie, NY. She went to Sarah Lawrence and continued her education through avid reading. Sally enjoyed sports throughout her life. She had a longtime attachment to the game of golf as a participant and spectator. She had a deep affection for sports commentators on both sides of the pond. Our house was alive with talk of golf, baseball, and, begrudgingly, basketball. Sally had busy hands. She painted landscapes and produced award-winning embroidery in mixed media found in shops along our travels. She looked forward to her weekly bridge games. Sally loved dogs, particularly Keeshounds, a breed that she was given in Philadelphia nearly forty years ago. Philanthropy became a major activity in the last decade of her life. Sally established the Stockman Family Foundation and its support of art conservation. She delighted in the success of the foundation and the letters of thanks from the recipients, including many New Mexico art museums and conservation programs. From a small beginning, the foundation has become one of the larger art conservation supporters in the country. Sally is survived by her husband, Hervey, her son Hervey Jr. "Peter" (Baltimore) and wife Dyson; and three grandchildren: Allison (Washington DC), Robert (Baltimore), and Charles (Seattle). The family is planning a private reception in the Four Hills area and asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to a favorite charity.

TRAUGER -- Frederick Dale Trauger, well known geologist and author, passed away May 3, 2008, at the age of 92 in Albuquerque. Fred was born in California's San Joaquin Valley where his father was Chairman of the Lindsay-Strathmore Irrigation District. Geology was a natural course of study, and Fred received his B.A. from Fresno State University in 1939. He then entered the graduate program at Stanford University. As a student, he worked with the Strategic Minerals Branch of the U.S. Geological Survey evaluating mercury and manganese deposits in Nevada and California. At the outbreak of World War II, Fred enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was trained as a photo interpreter. He served in that capacity in North Africa and Italy in 1945. With his return to civilian life, Fred joined the Ground-Water Branch of the U.S. Geological Survey in the Oregon District. In 1952 Fred was transferred to the New Mexico District of the USGS in Albuquerque. Fred served as President of the New Mexico Geological Society in 1966. In 1972 he was made an Honorary Member of the NMGS. He published a number of investigations of the water resources in Oregon, California, and New Mexico. His report "Water resources and general geology of Grant County, New Mexico" (Bureau of Mines Hydrologic Report 2, 1972) remains a classic for southwestern New Mexico. He was one of the recognized authorities on the ground-water resources of eastern New Mexico and the southern Great Plains. Following his retirement from the U.S. Geological Survey, Trauger founded the consulting firm of Geohydrology Associates, Inc. with T.E. (Tim) Kelly in 1975. The firm specialized in water supplies for municipal and industrial purposes. Fred participated in the development of water supplies for the Escalante Power Plant at Prewitt, New Mexico, as well as for municipal and well design for the City of Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Silver City, and Carlsbad. Trauger was a recognized authority on roses and a long-time and active member of the Rose Society of Albuquerque. He was a consulting rosarian and an accredited judge at rose shows throughout the southwest. He later developed a love for orchids and exotic trees. The "Trauger Forest" in northeast Albuquerque contains giant redwoods and various species of pine and cedar found only in California and Arizona. Fred was also a recognized authority on turquoise. He visited most of the turquoise-producing areas in the Southwest and made a detailed study of the Carico Lake Mine near Austin, Nevada. He presented a series of lectures on the occurrence and quality of turquoise, with lectures presented as far away as New York City. Fred is preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne Marie Moore Trauger; his father, George W. Trauger, Sr., his birth mother, Amy Ellen Barr and his step-mother, Betty Trauger, who raised Fred from an early age; and his brother George W. VALDEZ -- Rosa THE BROKEN CHAIN We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name, In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone, For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide, And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again Author Unknown I still think of you everyday Grandma, I wish I had spent more time with you and learned more of your life. Your wonderful recipes are lost forever. Till our chain links again, Love Connie
