DUNCAN -- Lucille Mae Thursby Cox Beatty Duncan, passed away on February 10, 2008. She was born July 8, 1917 to Inez and George Day Thursby in Kirksville, Missouri. During her lifetime huge changes occurred in our country. Cars were not a common sight and things like ice for your refrigerator and coal to heat your home were delivered by horse and wagon. She entertained in the parlor and wore a large bow in her bobbed hair. Being a child in the Great Depression, she told of the times they had only oatmeal to eat for weeks at a time. As a teen Lucille loved dancing and music, so she and friends often managed to find a way to get to Chicago and dance to the bands of Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller. Moving to Albuquerque in the 1930s was a leap of faith as she had only one friend in the Albuquerque area and no idea of where she could work. Taking any job she could find meant doing lots of different tasks, but she always adapted. Lucille was active in helping her husband set up their business Rocky Mountain Wholesale Company. When her daughter started school, she became a full-time housewife and recollections of her making margarine yellow so it would look like butter and painting the linoleum counter to match the curtains (much to the chagrin of her husband) are but a few of the things she tackled, fearlessly. Like her husband, she was an involved member of the Democratic Party and once entertained Ted Kennedy at a function in their home to meet fellow democrats. She was the snake charmer in The Daughters of the Nile (or as they called themselves, "The Dirty Daughters of the Ditch"). These are only a few of the many memories of Lucille's life. She will be remembered for her smiling eyes (her sister called her Twinkle), hard work ethic and giving personality. She will be greatly missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Joe Patterson of Charlotte, North Carolina; grandsons, Jack Patterson who resides in Honolulu, Hawaii; Jim Patterson, who lives in Spokane, Washington; and LCDR Joe Patterson and his wife, Isabel and their children, Joe IV and Aneka who live in St. Petersburg, Florida. Lucille is survived by her sister, Dorothy Bowe her husband, Sam; niece and nephew, Kathy and Gilbert and their children. The family would like to thank The Grand Court (assisted living), Canyon Transitional Rehabilitation Center, Hospice of the Sandias and French Mortuary for their compassionate care.
