HUGHES -- Florence Whitsett Hughes passed away on October 1, 2007. Florence began life in the rugged mining hills of Whitsett, Kentucky - a town named for her father's side of the family. There, beginning in 1920, she saw her father, Harold, serve as mining camp law officer and store owner, and committed to memory the colorful lives of the coal miners and their families. During the 1930s, the Whitsetts immigrated to Gallup, NM, which was experiencing a boom in the mining and petroleum industry. Florence loved public school, and was a brilliant student who excelled in speech and dramatic recitations. Though longing to go to college, her parents thought it best for her to go to work following graduation. This event, though a great source of disappointment, was to provide impetus to a lifetime of volunteerism. Florence married Jay Woodrow Hughes of Hearne, TX, around 1942, and they embarked on a journey that eventually led them to Albuquerque following the war. Jay and Florence had two children, Mark and Kevin, and began their family together on the west side of the city. Around 1960, after Jay gained employment with Sandia National Laboratories, the family moved to Albuquerque's North East Heights and joined a budding Presbyterian church named Saint Andrew. Their church home provided an ideal environment in which Florence could practice her keen organizational and leadership skills to help begin a Women's Group, devoted to social and spiritual issues, and serve as church secretary for one of St. Andrew's early ministers, Harold Daniels. The pinnacle of Florence's volunteer work came through her involvement at Martineztown House of Neighborly Service, where she served as secretary, president, and member of the Board of Directors throughout the 1970s. Florence was passionately dedicated to the mission of this Presbyterian organization, which provides positive after-school activities for children, helps provide emergency food and clothing assistance to families in need, and runs a senior services program in this historic part of Old Albuquerque. With a fluency in Spanish, she most enjoyed interacting with the children of Martineztown, with whom she made many friends. Florence was also a model church deacon, quietly providing support and visiting parishioners at home or in the hospital. After her son Mark was diagnosed with schizophrenia, she and Jay became long-time members of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI), an organization dedicated to helping sufferers and their families better understand and cope with mental illness, and influence lawmakers to protect and serve people with these disabilities. Throughout most of her life, Florence was an avid reader, student of current events, ace bridge player, and convivial host to visitors in her home. Though she developed dementia in the last years of her life, she always took great pleasure watching her only grandson, Joshua (now 10), demonstrate his karate moves or sing one of his own compositions to her. She is survived by her grandson, her one surviving son, Kevin Hughes, a beloved daughter-in-law, Mary Reed, and many life-long friends. Her Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 13, 2007, 11:00 a.m., at Saint Andrew Church, 5301 Ponderosa Avenue, NE. A reception will follow.
