BURCHELL -- R. CLAY Dr. Clay Burchell passed away August 8, 2007 at his home in Albuquerque, surrounded by his four daughters and loving wife, Sally. Always a maverick and an iconoclast, Clay was traveling with his wife right until his sudden decline. Clay was born in 1928 in Chicago, IL, the only son of Midwest furniture designers and manufacturers, Lorena Dillon Burchell and Robert Lawrence Burchell. His upbringing on a rural farm shaped many of his later views toward authority (trust one's self and one's family first) and life in general. Clay attended Kent School, MIT and the University of Buffalo Medical School, where he met Sally Fowler. Sally and Clay were married in 1953. Betsy, Molly, Marty and Susie joined them in due course. Clay trained and practiced as an Obstetrician and Gynecologist. He began at the University of Illinois, then became Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hartford Hospital, and then at the Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque. Throughout his career he searched for better ways to practice medicine. He pioneered surgical techniques in operative obstetrics that still save lives today. But he also searched constantly for ways to make women more informed and more comfortable while in the male-dominated hospital setting. Indeed, he was a lifelong proponent of women's rights and dignity, and not just because he was surrounded by women at home. In later years, Clay turned his reformist energies to more broad issues in medicine, in particular, creative ways to deliver better care for less cost. These thoughts are summed up in a volume he co-authored, Reinventing Medical Practice (MGMA 2002). At the time of his death he was still working, in collaboration with his daughter Molly, also a physician, on proposals to improve care and contain medical costs. Clay's friends and family will remember him always as a man who enjoyed wit, repartee, and a gentle tease. Whether talking about Winston Churchill or the best manure to grow roses, whether at work in his shop making copper sculptures or rebidding a slam with his only love Sally at bridge, Clay was never idle and never boring. We will all miss him very much. Following a private memorial service, there will be a celebration of Clay at his home on 8 Tennis Court NW, Albuquerque, NM on Sunday, August 12, 2007 from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to The Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation 875 Via De La Paz, Suite C, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272.

GARCIA -- DANIEL GERALD JR. In Loving Memory Of Daniel Gerald Garcia Jr. August 11, 2003 to April 28, 2006 Some people think that they have to live a long life in order to have an impact. In your short little 2 1/2 year life, you impacted more lives than you can imagine, you brought more tears to the eyes of many than you will ever know, and have left a legacy of people who will never forget you. Yes, your little short life mattered and you had a great impact on others. It changed us all and made us learn to appreciate what really matters, and let go of that which doesn't. Your precious smile is our daily light to continue to live Your cute little laugh will always be like music to our ears And, as for wonderful little you, you were a gift and treasure so indescribable, no one can ever take your place. RIFFENBURGH -- Arthur S. Riffenburgh, 78, a fighter for justice and exemplar of compassion, has gone on before us July 24, 2007. After previously surviving leukemia, his voice was stilled by throat cancer but our memories hold his words. Art was born in 1928 in Christiansburg, VA. After some travel he began his life in the west where he earned a B.A. in psychology at UNM, Albuquerque, in 1951. After college, Art answered what proved a lifelong concern about social injustice with a career in law enforcement, beginning with a 4 year service in the NM State Police. During these years he was stationed in various locations in New Mexico bringing along his new and growing family. This moving broadened Art's contact with and understanding of our richly tri-cultural peoples which served him well in the years to come. He directed his energies into the federal court system as a probation/parole officer in Albuquerque until he retired in 1978. This experience gave Art the intimate insight into our "corrections" establishment which guided his powerful contributions to the NM Coalition to Repeal the Death Penalty of which he was an active and cherished member for many years. Art was also very concerned about the earth, especially all the creatures of the Arctic. His "citizen business" cards read: "Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees. Live modestly. Forgo greed. Be compassionate." His humor, stories, and loving heart will be missed by all those he touched, cared about, and had faith in. The world is a better place for Art having been here with us! Survivors include his beloved wife of 55 years, Ruth; his son, Harry; daughter, Donna Strebe and her husband, David; daughter, Audrey Riffenburgh; brother, Ralph and his wife, Angelyn; brother, Robert and his wife, Gerrye; and grandchildren, Daniel, Renata, and Hannah Strebe. A Memorial Service and reception will be held at Daniel's Funeral Home at 3113 Carlisle NE, Albuquerque (Ph: 884-1188) 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 18, 2007. A wake/dinner to celebrate his life will follow at Albuquerque Mennonite Church, 1300 Girard NE. Memorials be made to NM Coalition to Repeal the Death Penalty, PO Box 8552, Santa Fe, NM, 87504 OR Northern Alaska Environmental Center, 830 College Rd., Fairbanks, AK 99701.
