DENNEY -- Wilma Upton Denney, 92, a resident of Albuquerque since 1946, died Tuesday, June 19, 2007. She is survived by her husband Rex H. Denney. She is also survived by her sons, Douglas Denney and wife, Karen of Wildomar, CA; David Denney and wife, Linda of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Krystal, Michael, Kyle Denney of Wildomar, CA; Erin Phillips and her husband, Matt of Las Vegas, NV; Jordan Denney and his wife, Whitney of Seattle, WA; Stephen Denney of Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her son, Donald G. Denney. Mrs. Denney was a member of the Gold Star Mothers. She took up tennis later in life and became a champion senior tennis player. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 23, 2007, at 10:00 a.m., at Hope Evangelical Free Church, 4710 Juan Tabo NE, Albuquerque, NM 87111. DENNIS -- Bob Dennis of Albuquerque, NM, passed away on Friday, June 15, 2007, at the age of 75. Bob was a native of Oklahoma, born in Blanchard and raised in Woodward. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served his country in Korea. Bob made his home in Albuquerque in 1964 where he had a long, satisfying career in sales. After he retired in 1995, he followed his love of travel. Bob enjoyed many memorable trips with his family and friends. He was also an avid table tennis player and volunteered much of his time to the Albuquerque Senior Centers. He had a strong love for his family. His warm heart, delightful sense of humor, and fun loving personality made him the great husband, father, and friend that he was. Bob is survived by his wife of 44 years, Betty Jo; daughter, Carolyn; sons, Leland and Paul and their wives, Deborah and Christine. Bob also leaves six beloved grandchildren. There will be a private interment at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church on Saturday, June 23, 2007, at 9:30 a.m. His family and friends will hold a Celebration of Life on Saturday, June 23, 2007, at 11:00 a.m., at Manzano Mesa Multi-generational Center, 501 Elizabeth Street SE. FRENCH -- Ann "Annie" French, a lifelong resident of New Mexico, passed away Sunday, June 17, 2007. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Jerry French; children, Ron Foster and wife, Donna of Meridian, ID, Jeanne Gonzalez and husband, Greg of Tulsa, OK, Janet Rivera and husband, Gil of Albuquerque, Christopher Jerry French of Rio Rancho, and Janice Prager and husband, Doug of Hawaii; eight grandchildren, Kevin, Christopher and Cameron Foster, Stephen and Robbie Rivera, and Jennifer, Joshua, and Daniel Prager; and brother, Douglas Hartenberger of Albuquerque. Mrs. French was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Rosie Hartenberger. Annie was born in Albuquerque in 1938. She graduated from Highland High School. Annie worked at First National Bank where she met and married her husband, Jerry. She also worked at Quinn and Company and Russell's Bakery. She was an active member of Exalting Jesus Fellowship Church and assisted at Glory Christian Fellowship. Annie loved and supported her grandchildren, never missing an opportunity to attend a sporting event. She also supported the Dukes, Isotopes and the Scorpions. GABALDON -- Jacobita "Jackie" Gabaldon found her peace on Monday, June 18, 2007 at the age of 82. Mrs. Gabaldon attended Albuquerque High School. She was preceded in death by her son, Ralph Gabaldon Jr. and daughter, Elaine Gomez. Mrs. Gabaldon is survived by her husband of 64 years, Ralph Gabaldon; children, Gloria Saiz and husband, Max, Alex Gabaldon, Larry Gabaldon, Angelina Gabaldon Jayawardana, Elizabeth Romero and husband, Ruben, and Chris Baldonado; brother-in-law, Joe Chavez; 31 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. HERRERA -- BARBARA B. Our beloved Barbara J. Herrera, 81 years young, has journeyed home to be with the Lord and her two sons . . . Martin and Dean. Born January 20, 1926, she is survived by her husband of 57 years, Alex; and their daughter Carlotta (Carol) and her husband Randy La Plante. And daughters-in-law Connie and Stephanie. She was preceded in death by her parents Andres and Rosita Baca, brothers Joe Baca, Skippy, P.A., Epy, Ben and Max . . . surviving sister Rosie Armijo and brother, Andrew Baca. KING -- Eudora (Eudy) King, born July 14, 1919 in Texarkana, AR, died peacefully in her sleep on June 11, 2007 in Albuquerque. Eudora was the daughter of the late James D. Culley and Ella L. Glasgow Culley, wife of James L. King, and the mother of Judy King (Moore) Villella. A resident of Albuquerque since 1965, Eudy was one of the first women trained to be control tower operators in the Women's Army Air Corps during WWII. While serving at the pilot training center at Lubbock Army Airfield, she rose to the rank of Corporal. She attended East Texas State Teachers College (now Texas A&M at Commerce). After she married Navy Lieutenant, Jim King in San Diego on June 16, 1945, the couple moved to Texarkana, TX. As James pursued his career in the Federal Aviation Administration, they lived in Alexandria, LA, Sulphur Springs, TX, Oklahoma City, El Paso, Fort Worth, and Albuquerque. Eudy was a secretary for the Albuquerque Public Schools for many years, and was also active in numerous civic, fraternal, and charitable organizations, including a stint as president of Christian Women's Fellowship and a Laureate member of Beta Sigma Phi. One of her many interests was contract bridge and she was an accomplished player. She and Jim enjoyed their frequent travels around the world. Beloved by her friends, Eudy was a generous, caring person, who was funny, smart and gregarious. She and Jim were loyal members of Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband of 62 years; daughter, Judy and son-in-law, Patrick Villella of Albuquerque; brother-in-law, Bobby Wayne King and wife, Edna, of Saltillo, Texas; sister-in-law, Billie Rose Marable of Franklin, Texas. She will be missed by the many friends and family she leaves behind. A Celebration of her life will take place on Friday, June 22, 2007 at Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 8600 Academy NE, in Albuquerque at 4:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. MAES -- LEO T. Mr. Leo Maes, 58, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on June 17, 2007. Leo is survived by his beloved wife, Antoinette; his children, Michael Maes and wife, Rochelle, Sarah Lieberenz and Alicia Maes-Gonzales; his sisters, Anna Abeyta and husband, Eddie, Alice Maes and Angela Blea; his brothers, Victor Maes and Herman Maes; five grandchildren, Alexis, Troy, Adam, Jackson, and Laura; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Leo was preceded in death by his parents Jose and Mary; and wife, Nikki Lynn. MARQUEZ -- Filiberto Luis (Louie) Marquez, 84, passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2007. Marquez was born in Anton Chico, NM on July 14, 1922 at the home of his parents, Jose and Barbarita Garcia Marquez. His mother was a Five Star mother having five of her sons serve in the army during World War II. Marquez's grandfathers were among the original families who applied for the Anton Chico and Pecos Land Grants. The families were descendents of the Captain Geronimo Marquez who was one of the first Spanish families who came with Don Juan de Onate in 1598 to settle Nueva Espana. Marquez was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, ten brothers, and a grandson. Josephine, his wife of 53 years, three sons, three daughters, and seven grandchildren survive him. His children include Ana Maria, Luis, David, Raul, Maribel, and Cristina. Marquez is also survived by a sister and many nephews and nieces. Marquez graduated from Bernalillo High School, run by the Sisters of Loretto, in 1940. He started his college career at New Mexico A & M (now New Mexico State University) and joined the army in 1942. He served 28 months in the Asiatic Pacific theatre in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines (Leyte, Samar, and Cebu). Marquez's 478th AAA Battalion was awarded a commendation from General Arnold (Americal Division) for their action on Cebu Island. They were also issued a Presidential Unit Citation from the Philippine government. Additionally, Marquez was awarded the Good Conduct medal, Asiatic-Pacific medal with two bronze stars, the Philippines Liberation medal, the Victory medal, and the Presidential Citation Unit badge. After his honorable discharge from the army, Marquez returned to New Mexico State University, received his Bachelor of Science degree, and later completed his Master of Science degree at Washington State University. He worked as Sandoval County Extension agent for 30 years until his retirement in 1978 from NMSU as an Associate Professor. Marquez was a resident of Bernalillo since 1949. Marquez received the National Defense, Combat Service, Overseas Service, Armed Forces Expedition, and American Campaign medals for his military service. Marquez was awarded the National Distinguished award from the National County Extension Agent Association and received a Meritorious Service award from NMSU. He was a life member of the V.F.W. and served on the Bernalillo School Board. Louie Marquez was well known for the delicious apples he grew on his small orchard in Bernalillo. This enterprise kept him busy during his retirement years. Marquez and his wife traveled extensively in Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, and throughout the United States. The Most Holy Rosary will be recited on Friday, June 22, 2007, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel. MCINTYRE -- Christine Esther McIntyre was born September 28, 1918 in Alamosa, CO to Elinor Chableau and William Berardinelli. She passed away peacefully after a long illness on Wednesday, June 20, 2007 in Albuquerque. Christine is survived by her sons, William, Ronald, Guyton, and Clifford; daughter, Roxanne Harbor; sisters, Ernestine Chavez and Evangeline Martinez; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and a large extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband, John F. McIntyre. Christine was the matriarch of her large extended family. She was always the family favorite when anyone had problems to resolve. Her warm and nonjudgmental attitude made it easy to talk to her. Christine was a fun person to be around and all will miss her light-hearted nature. NELSON -- Lloyd Spencer Nelson, Ph.D., passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2007, at the age of 83. He was born in Chicago, IL, in 1924, the only child of Elsie and Roy Nelson. After serving as a naval officer in World War II, he graduated with a doctorate in Chemistry from the University of Chicago. In that campus's chapel, he wed Lorna Manney in 1948. Dr. Nelson worked in high-temperature metals research at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey and at Sandia Laboratories in Albuquerque. After retirement from Sandia Labs, he continued as a scientific researcher at the University of Wisconsin and as a consultant. Lifelong interests included family, music, gardening, Boy Scouts of America, Indian Guides, Band Boosters, world affairs, and photography. Lloyd is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Lorna Manney Nelson; four sons: David and wife, Linda; Evan and wife, Debora Veseth, all of Roswell, NM; Jeff and wife, Sharon of Milwaukie, OR; Milton and his wife, Carolyn of West Hills, CA; and one daughter, Georgia McKinney (born Ardis) of Ojai, CA. Lloyd also leaves behind grandsons, Adrian and Kelsey Veseth-Nelson, of Roswell, NM; five other grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren who live in other states. ROPER -- Lou Roper, 81, closed his eyes on earth and opened them in heaven Tuesday, June 19, 2007. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mable; his parents, Louis and Lillie; and his sister, Louise McClelland. He is survived by his three children, Carol Roper, Chuck and wife, Sarah Roper, Gail and husband, Tom Salazar; and his granddaughter, Rachel Roper. Born in Denver, Lou served in the Army as an x-ray technician in France during World War II. He then became an engineer for Honeywell and Sandia National Laboratory. Lou and Mable were avid Lobo Basketball fans. Most importantly, he was a faithful Sunday School teacher and lighting engineer at Hoffmantown Church for over 30 years. Lou was always tender about the Savior's love for him. SILVA -- Agapito "Gap" Encinias Silva, 87, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at home, on Sunday, June 17, 2007. He was born to Isabel and Mauricio Silva on October 22, 1919 in San Marcial, NM. In 1929 the family moved to Gallup, NM where Gap graduated from Gallup High School in 1939. He enlisted in the New Mexico Army National Guard and was inducted into the regular Army in 1941, assigned to the 200th Coast Artillery and stationed at Ft. Stotsenberg on Clark Field, the Philippines. Gap was taken captive by the Japanese after the fall of Bataan in 1941 and survived 31/2 years in Japan as a prisoner of war. He received many honors and medals for his service, including the Bronze Star, three Purple Hearts, Philippine Defense, American Campaign, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, Philippine Liberation, American Defense, and Honorable Service While A POW. After the war Gap worked at Kirtland Air Force Base and retired in 1973. Following his retirement he enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Gap loved going fishing, gambling (especially at Pai-Gow and Blackjack), and sometimes embellished his golf scores. In the years since WWII, he was an unwavering advocate for veterans and an active life-member of the Bataan Veterans Organization, American Ex-POW's, the DAV, the VFW, the Purple Heart Association, the American Legion, and the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor (of which he was the National Commander from 2004-2006). On November 11, 2004 Gap was honored to lay a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery for Veteran's Day. He was proud to be an instrumental part in the design and realization of the Bataan Memorial Park at the corner of Lomas and Carlisle NE. Gap was also often a guest speaker at local schools and events. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, his singing and dancing, delicious tacos and chili beans, and his undying and great love for his family and friends. STODDARD -- William Philips Stoddard, noted adobe builder, died Sunday, June 17, 2007, in his home surrounded by family and friends. Born January 2, 1951, in St. Louis, Missouri, he came to Albuquerque as a college student at the University of New Mexico in 1973. Soon after, he met Leslie, his wife of 33 years. Together they constructed their unique adobe home on Guadalupe Trail which has changed and grown to meet the needs of their family over the years. As founder and president of Wm. Stoddard Construction, Inc., he built and worked on many residences, historical buildings, and commercial projects in the area. William became known for his adobe expertise and quality workmanship. Despite the multitude of health challenges that he faced throughout his life, he refused to let them dampen his indomitable spirit and zest for life. He was a generous, compassionate man endowed with an unorthodox, larger-than-life-size sense of humor and character. Will brought entertainment and laughter into the lives of everyone he met. He would go to extraordinary lengths to achieve a surprise or create a celebration. He had a gift for making friends wherever he went and will be mourned by many. He was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Ruth Stoddard. William is survived by his wife, Leslie; son, Justin; daughter, Jenna; brother, Jack Stoddard; sisters, Elizabeth Zorumski and Debra Stoddard; father-in-law, Garland Donleavy, and many nieces and nephews. An open house celebration of his life is planned at the Stoddard residence at 9721 Guadalupe Tr NW (North of Alameda Blvd.) on Thursday, June 21, from 5:00pm-8:00pm. Hawaiian shirts and shorts are requested attire. Well-wishers are encouraged to stop by, bring their favorite "William stories," and share food, drink, and remembrances. WATKINS -- Dickerson R. Watkins, a resident of Albuquerque, died Tuesday, June 19, 2007. He was born November 7, 1923 in Santa Rita, NM, a small mining community, no longer in existence. Those born in Santa Rita are now referred to as having "been born in space." The family moved to Santa Barbara, Chihuahua in the Republic of Mexico in 1924, and lived throughout Mexico for thirty years. Mr. Watkins attended high school at Texas Military Institute boarding school in San Antonio, Texas. After one year of college at Texas A & M, he enlisted in the Navy in 1942, and served in the 7th Battalion USNC (Seabees). He served in the Aleutian Islands and on the Island of Okinawa and was discharged from the Navy in 1946. Returning from the war he entered the University of Texas where he met and married Winifred I. Varnon. Upon graduation from college in 1949 with a degree in Petroleum Geology, he returned to Mexico where he spent eight years with a British company in San Francisco del Oro, Chihuahua. Due to lack of facilities to educate his four children in San Francisco del Oro, the family returned to the United States where Dick worked for several years in the potash mines of Carlsbad, New Mexico, later, starting his own mining supply business in Albuquerque. Mr. Watkins retired at age 66, petitioned Masonic Albuquerque Lodge No. 60 and served as Master and Secretary of his Lodge. He belonged to the Albuquerque York Rite bodies and served as Grand Commander and Grand Master, Secretary, Recorder, and Treasurer. He was serving as Grand High Priest at the time of his death. He was a member of the Ballut Abyad Shrine, Scottish Rite, Desert Rose Chapter No. 70 of Eastern Star, and served as Master of Albuquerque Memorial Lodge No. 1. He served as Governor in the New Mexico York Rite College No. 145 and received the Order of the Purple Cross. He was Intendant General for the Red Cross of Constantine for the State of New Mexico and was currently serving as Secretary, Recorder, and Registrar for six various York Rite bodies. Mr. Watkins was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church and a volunteer blood donor for over 60 years, having donated over 20 gallons of blood during his lifetime. He is survived by his wife, Win, with whom he celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary on April 10, 2007, his children, Diane Murray and her husband, Richard, of California; Cynthia Lee and her husband, Bruce, of Phoenix; Cory Watkins of Denver; and adopted son, David, of Albuquerque; brother, Larry M. Watkins and his wife, Martha, of Arizona; their four sons; a niece, Pam; two granddaughters; and two step-grandsons. Mr. Watkins was preceded in death by his son, Dickerson R.
