BATES -- William Colcord Bates was born on April 14, 1923 in Tulsa, OK to John Wesley Bates and Caroline Colcord Bates. Bill grew up and attended public schools in Tulsa. He actively participated in sports throughout his life including golf, skiing, wrestling, football, and his favorite, tennis. He attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH as did his father, uncle, cousin, and brother, Jack. In his junior year at Dartmouth with the onset of U.S. involvement in World War II, Bill volunteered for the Navy and became a fighter pilot, earned the rank of Lieutenant, and was stationed at Pensacola, Florida. At the end of the war, he returned to Dartmouth and graduated in January, 1947. Rather than join his father's oil-drilling business, Reading & Bates, where his brother had become President, Bill was eager to strike out on his own as an entrepreneur. He visited the CEO of Alcoa Aluminum on his return trip to Tulsa after graduation to win the opportunity to become their sales representative in New Mexico. Bill also was an avid rancher, first on his family's ranch in Pawhuska, OK and then on their ranch near Corona, NM, through which he came to know Albuquerque. Bill started an aluminum-supply company in Albuquerque with Frank Cronican, the husband of his sister, Harriett. In Tulsa, in October, 1947, Bill married Patricia Estill, his life-partner for 59 years. They built their first home in 1948 on Lafayette NE. In 1949 they purchased farms in Polvadera and Las Lunas, NM where they grew alfalfa and ran cattle. In 1950 they returned to Albuquerque where their son, Bill Jr. was born. Bill expanded the business called Bates Roberts Co. to building supplies and lumber. Bill especially loved being in the mountains of New Mexico and founded Bates Lumber Company to cut timber and manufacture and sell lumber and its by-products in the U.S. and Mexico. In 1952 their daughter, Patricia, soon to be known as Dolly, was born. At a christening of a Reading & Bates offshore oil rig, Bill met the owner of Letorneau, the manufacturer of the newly invented land-clearing machines. Bill saw the opportunity to clear western ranches of encroaching mesquite, cactus, and scrub trees, in order to enhance the growth of native grasses for grazing cattle. With his first land-clearing machine, the "Dolly," Bill proved his concept on the family ranch in Corona. He also cleared land for tree-farms in the southeastern U.S. and Cotzicualco, Mexico. Bill exercised his passion for flying his Bonanza plane, traveling between his far-flung businesses. Pulled too much from his family, Bill finally elected to sell his tree-clearing business and concentrate his activities in New Mexico. There he also built and sold homes, motels, and other real estate, some designed by his wife, Pat. Often they lived in the homes as they upgraded them for sale. For leisure, Bill and Pat loved to vacation in the Bahamas, joining his parents to cruise for several weeks a winter, often with their children as well. Bill and Pat owned a home in Aspen for 25 years where they enjoyed the outdoors. Later they owned a home on Harbour Island in the Bahamas where they wintered after Bill's retirement. They also enjoyed foreign travel, to Japan and China as cultural and business ambassadors and for many years in the autumn to France where they stayed in Paris visiting friends. Bill's favorite charitable activity was his support of and participation on the board of the Albuquerque Zoo. Rather than sending flowers, the family encourages gifts in his memory to the Albuquerque Zoo, the Albuquerque Art Museum, or the University Art Museum. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his son, William Colcord Bates Jr. of Albuquerque; his daughter, Patricia Lee Estill Bates Spragins (Dolly) of Chicago, IL; and his two grandchildren, Peter Bates Spragins of Claremont, CA and Elizabeth Lee Spragins of Williamstown, MA. Those of us who knew and loved Bill Bates appreciate God's blessing to us in the gift of his life. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, November 27, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. at the chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 250 Locust St. NE.

HOLTZMAN -- Cleo Marguerite Holtzman, a long-time resident of Los Lunas, passed away the afternoon of November 20, 2006. She had been hospitalized since October 4, following a fall in her home, and died of resulting complications. She was a believer in the God of the Bible, and His saving Son, Jesus Christ. Cleo was born October 23, 1916 in Okmulgee, OK. She was the eldest of three children of Harry B. Clark (a lifelong carpenter, who served as foreman on the Will Rogers Memorial in Claremore, OK) and wife, Charlotte (who, with her siblings, traveled in a covered wagon from Oklahoma to eastern New Mexico and staked a claim). The children grew up in Tulsa, OK, where Cleo took ballet and violin lessons; graduated from Tulsa Central High School in 1934; and later become a member of a city dance troupe. One of her greatest trials came with the death of her younger sister Fay, at age 14. Later, Cleo's life work centered in the medical field, beginning as a medical technician in doctor's offices. She moved to southern California in the 1950s, seeing a chance to live near family members who'd moved there and to try something new. Weekends were spent at family gatherings or rock-hounding and exploring the desert at a small family cabin near Twenty Nine Palms. Cleo later migrated with her family (including daughter, Kim) to New Mexico in 1966. True to a promise she offered about the move, she bought a horse and saddle for her daughter when they arrived (even before having a home!) and helped launch an ongoing involvement with horses for Kim and her eventual extended family. A 20-year civil service employee, Cleo worked at Kirtland Air Force Hospital as Supervisor of Hematology in the lab. During time off, she loved doing any kind of exploring in New Mexico, from seeing Indian ruins to old ghost towns. She also liked camping, traveling and genealogy research. It was her lifelong habit to wake before sunrise, and greet the day accompanied by coffee and a newspaper (and, when she had them, beloved pet dogs). She enjoyed music, especially the Big Band Sound and the Irish tenor, Daniel O'Donnell. The "Sound of Music" was her favorite movie. She remained a living companion of her mother for many years (both lent their hand to a multitude of gardening and building projects) until Charlotte's death at age 101. Then at age 81, Cleo set out on one of her gutsiest adventures, deciding to sell her home and move back to Oklahoma. While there, she loved eating at the "Catfish Platter" and embarking on trips with a close friend she'd made. Following the friend's death, she opted to return to Los Lunas to be near Kim's family. Cleo is survived by her daughter, Kim and her husband, Corky Morrison; granddaughters, Amy Chavez and husband, David, and Stefanie Morrison; and great-grandson, Kaden Chavez, all of Los Lunas; her brother, Orien Clark and wife, Virginia of Mesa, AZ; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister, Fay Maxine Clark. A celebration of life Service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 28, 2006 at Grace Fellowship, 3384 Hwy. 47 in Los Lunas. A potluck reception will follow.
