ALLEN -- The Honorable Frank H. Allen Jr., age 74, passed away on Tuesday, June 22, 2004. Frank was born in West Virginia on January 7, 1930 to Frank H. Allen Sr. and Katherine McNeer Allen. Survivors include his wife, Joanna McGuire-Allen, of Albuquerque, NM; his only daughter, Linley Allen, of Arlington, WA; two sons, John T. Allen and his wife, Patti, of Redman, WA, and David B. Allen and his wife, Kathleen, of Albuquerque; and nine grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; one son, Frank H. Allen III; and Joan McKinnon-Allen. Judge Allen attended the University of West Virginia, and was a graduate of the University of Illinois School of Law. He was also a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. A Memorial Service will be held in his honor on Saturday July 17, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. in St. John's Cathedral, 318 Silver Ave. SW. ARMIJO -- Manuel A. Armijo, age 92, of Santa Fe, passed away Tuesday June 22, 2004. He was preceded in death by his parents; and daughters, Jenny and Patricia. Manuel was born December 10, 1911 in Armijo, New Mexico the son of Lorenzo and Placida Armijo. He married Frances Apodaca on November 4, 1940 in Mora, New Mexico. Mr. Armijo was a member of the 200th Coast Artillery serving the Philippines, survived the Bataan Death March and was a POW in the Philippines for 3 1/2 years. Following his discharge he returned to Santa Fe where he was employed for the WPA Program, later working in the State Government where he was appointed in 1957 as the Director of the State Veterans Service Commission, until he retired in 1966. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. A member and past State Commander, past National Vice-Commander of the VFW, member of the Military Order of the Cooties, Order of the Purple Heart and the American POW Association. Memorial contributions may be donated to your favorite Charity. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Frances A. Armijo; three children, Fred Armijo, Peggy Ruiz, Loretta Lithgow, and husband, Clarence (Porky); nine grandchildren, Loreen Lithgow, Vince Lithgow and wife, Andrea, Dawn Lithgow, Mark Forte, Nycole Forte, A.J. Forte, Fred Armijo and wife, Marissa, Jennifer Winston and Adam Armijo; five great-grandchildren, Rachel Lithgow, Joseph Lithgow, Tianna Winston, Kaitlin Armijo and Zachary Armijo; sisters-in-law, Josephine Ipiotis, and Ellen Apodaca; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 24, 2004, 3:00-5:00 p.m. at Berardinelli Family Chapel. Another visitation will be held Thursday evening 6:30 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, where a rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, June 25, 2004, at 9:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. BATTEY -- Helen Veronica Battey, 96, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2004 at Lovelace Sandia Hospice. She was born on November 1, 1907 on Governors Island, New York City to James and Ellen Bulger. A resident of Albuquerque since 1970, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Orlando, in 1977. She is survived by her son, James Battey and wife, Katherine. BROWER -- Nagle F. "Jack" Brower, 83, passed away Monday, June 21, 2004. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia A. Diaz; granddaughter, Victoria R. Diaz of Albuquerque; grandson, Richard F. Ortiz and wife, Dorothy of Los Lunas; great-grandchildren, Edward Diaz, Savannah Diaz, Andrew Padilla, Adrian Padilla, Christopher Miera and Andre R. Ortiz. Jack was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister. Mr. Brower was owner and operator of Brower Security Services in Albuquerque for 40 years. He served in WWII in the Marine Corps. CARATTINI -- Julio Maria Caratini II, retired U.S. Army Captain, of 2601 Elwood Place NE, Albuquerque, NM, passed away quietly in the Veterans Hospital on June 21, 2004, at the age of 83. He was born in Barrio Pastor, A bonito, PR, son of Julio M. Carattini I & Amparo Padro. Preceded in death by parents & wife, Valeria M. Kons, who died recently, November 4, 2003, in their residence, after 59 years of marriage. They both loved their country, PR and always dreamed of returning some day. They were residents in NM for only about 13 years. Their many friends will miss them. Devoted father of Donnamarie (David) Boyer, of Albuquerque, NM; & Janet M. Carattini, of Altamonte, Florida. Dearly missed by grandchildren: Manny, Jeannette, Donna Nieto; Janet and Jaime Lopez III; great grandchildren, Christian, Alex Diaz, Irmarie Berdecia and Jaime Lopez IV. Also survived by sisters: Mercedes Carattini, Hilda Ortiz, Didi Santini & Emma Malave. He was known as "Papa Yuyo" by his family & friends. He joined the U.S. Army in 1944 in PR & served in WW II & Korean Conflict. Member of the St. Bernadette Catholic Church. He will be greatly missed & never forgotten. CARATTINI -- Julio M. Carattini, II, loving husband to Violet Carattini who passed away in November 2003, and best friend and mentor to his son, Julio M. Carattini III, passed away at the V.A. Regional Medical Center on Monday, June 21, 2004. Julio II is survived by Julio III and his wife, Patricia, Julio IV and his wife, Deja, Julio V, Jennifer Lyons and her husband, David Lyons; and four great-grandchildren. In his kind way, he accepted Donna Boyer and Janet Anza into his household to raise and provide guidance and direction. Julio II, an Army Infantry Officer, served his country in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. A true patriot, he always instilled into his son the meaning of Courgae, Integrity, and Honor and to this day it has made his son a better person. His sisters, Mary Carattini, Emma Malave, Didi Santini and Hilda Carattini will miss their baby brother. Albert Malave and Nicolas Santini, his brothers in law will miss him as a brother. Julio II was born in Aibonito, Puerto Rico, on June 30, 1921, to Italian and Spanish ancestry. His parents, Julio M. Carattini, I, and his mother, Amparo Padro Carattini, could not have been prouder of their son. He grew up on a farm and enjoyed his long walks to school with his sister, Emma. His long horseback rides to the coast with his father were always a fond memory to him. Julio II was fortunate in having four sisters that loved him as much as he loved them. He was truly blessed with the love of his parents, sisters, son, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Julio II and violet were together for 63 years and to the end they walked around holding hands. My father always told me that the secret to a great marriage was not to go to bed angry. Always kiss your spouse before going to sleep. Now they are together again and I thank God for the kindness he showed in letting my parents get back together for eternity. CHAVEZ -- Mr. Kenneth "Kenny" Mark Chavez Jr., went home to be with the Lord on Saturday at the age of 27. He was born in Albuquerque, NM on May 11, 1977. He graduated from Del Norte High School and was a two sport letterman in football and track. He was also very active in softball. He was a very loving, outgoing and charismatic person and will be deeply missed by many. Kenneth was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, James Chavez and maternal grandfather, Richard Serna. He is survived by his father, Kenneth Mark Chavez, mother, Carmen R. ELLIOTT -- Mildred Jewell Elliott, age 62, died on June 12, 2004. She is survived by two sons, Kenny of Albuquerque and Brian of Salida,Colorado. Jewell was born in Black Mountain, North Carolina and moved to Albuquerque in 1969. The family would like to thank the numerous friends and relatives for their sympathy.

FASENMYER -- Tony Fasenmyer, age 52 of Albuquerque joined the Lord and the Grateful Dead on June 4, 2004 as a result of illness. Since Tony grew up in Kansas City and his family-of-origin live there, a memorial service was held there on June 9. Tony was proud that he earned his bachelor's degree from Loyola and he told stories of fun times in New Orleans, including eating cajun seafood. Tony moved to Albuquerque 20 years ago and earned his master's degree in counseling from U.N.M. He subsequently did extensive training with the internationally renown family therapists Jay Haley and Cloe Madanes, while he directed a program for families on the Apache reservation. Tony became a very dedicated, skilled and effective family therapist and he compassionately helped to heal thousands of Albuquerque area families in his work at Memorial Hospital, Valencia Counseling Service and in his private practice at Especially For Families. Tony was responsible as well for doing training and supervision of many area therapists, including Albuquerque Public Schools counselors and social workers. Tony loved helping people. As a result, he leaves a legacy of skilled effectiveness which will see an innumerable number of families in the future continue to receive effective help in a deeply respectful manner. Tony was to us like the organic soil he loved to grow tomatoes in. Tony will be deeply missed in our community, but his work will live on through those he trained. Tony is survived in Albuquerque by his beloved girlfriend Tawanna Barker, who was his soulmate, as well as by his five dogs who were like his children, and his many friends and clients. Albuquerque Memorial Service will be Thursday June 24, 2004 at 6:30 p.m. outdoors at Summit Park, located at Constitution and Bryn Mawr N.E. Contributions may be made to Joy Junction Family Homeless Shelter. The music will live on in the silence between the notes.

GRAMMER -- Allie Maurine Parker Grammer, a resident of Albuquerque since 1926, passed away Sunday afternoon June 20, 2004. Maurine was born on December 7, 1903 in Kansas City, Missouri to John H. Parker and Julia West Parker. She was preceded in death by her husband David A. Grammer in 1959, a brother Chester Parker, and a sister, Helen Parker Hall. Maurine attended Stephens College and the University of Wyoming. A retired Albuquerque Public School teacher, she received her BA and MA degrees from the University of New Mexico. After retiring she concentrated on her Fine Arts and Indian Arts appraisal work, writing books for children. She also wrote many feature articles for magazines. Mrs. Grammer is survived by her son, David A. Grammer, Jr. and wife, Mary Elizabeth; grandson, David A Grammer, III and wife, Patricia Monaghan; Margaret Grammer Gay and husband, Remo Gay; Mary Katherine Grammer; Patricia Grammer Eskew and husband, Mike and three great-granddaughters, Carmen E. HAFELY -- Hoyle Leon Hafely passed to be with his Lord on Wednesday, June 16, 2004. Hoyle was celebrating his 80th year with gusto. His passing leaves behind a host of family and friends. Hoyle is survived by his wife, Jane Hafely; sisters, Lois Buchanan and Twila Whitmore; his son, Lee; daughters, Sherry, Shelly and Lynn; stepchildren, Gayle, Ed, Zoe, Janey, and Candy. Hoyle had 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends and family are invited to gather at the family home, Saturday, June 26, 2004 for continuing celebration of his life. A final Memorial will be held in Pagosa Springs on Sunday, June 27, 2004. HERRERA -- Phillip J. Herrera, Jr., a resident of Albuquerque, died on Monday, June 21, 2004. He is survived by his parents, Claudine and Phillip J. Herrera Sr. of Albuquerque; sister, Vanessa Herrera of Albuquerque; brother, Zachary Herrera of Albuquerque; maternal grandparents, Arthur and Virginia Archuleta of Albuquerque and paternal grandmother, Maria C. Herrera of Albuquerque. Phillip is also survived by his girlfriend, Amber Minssen and many other family and friends. He was a member of St. Joseph on the Rio Grande Catholic Church. Phillip graduated from Cibola High School in 2001 and was attending TVI; he had a desire to work for the fire department. He enjoyed sports, especially basketball and hanging out with his friends. HINDS -- Vera Santa Pelaccio Hinds, 85, was born Sunday, October 27, 1918 in Dawson, NM to Tony and Annie Pelaccio. She is survived by 2 children, son, Bill Hinds of Albuquerque and daughter, Betty Powell of Scottsdale, AZ; 5 grandchildren, Patrick Hinds of San Francisco, CA, Sheli Armstrong of Santa Fe, NM, Scott Grosso of Albuquerque, NM, Michele Powell of Tulsa, OK and David Powell of Ft. Collins, CO. Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Hinds, her parents, Tony and Annie Pelaccio and brothers, Willy Pelaccio and Albert Pelaccio. She resided with her husband, Fred, in Santa Fe for 32 years. Upon retirement, they lived in their hometown of Raton, NM for 12 years. Vera later lived at the Alzheimer's home at Sunrise Assisted Living in the St. Francis Bldg. in Albuquerque, NM. The disease of Alzheimer's takes on many different characteristics that play out differently in each individual. Vera maintained a presence of dignity and strength as she battled this horrible disease. Her nature became a very gentle sprit, filled with peace and full of grace. She was loved and comforted by the wonderful staff and caregivers at Sunrise. Vera is deeply loved by her family and will be greatly missed. KNEE -- Steve Knee, 44, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died suddenly on Saturday, June 19, 2004. He is survived by his wife, Helen Knee; children, Peter, Danielle, Nicholas, Amanda, Ciara, and Kristiana Knee; mother, Dora Knee-Brandt; brother, Danny Knee and wife Sarah; sister, Sandi Novak and husband Mike; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Pete Knee, and step-father, Joseph Brandt. Steve was born on May 26, 1960 and graduated from St. Pius X High School in 1978 and from UNM with a BS in civil engineering. He was co-owner of ABQ Engineering, and an avid sports enthusiast. As a youngster he played Little League Baseball, YAFL, and high school football. Following his love of football, he became a YAFL coach for more than 15 years. He also coached the freshman football teams at La Cueva High School and Cibola High School. Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Community, 12500 Carmel NE. MARQUEZ -- Lorenzo "Larry" Antonio Marquez Jr., 63 of Albuquerque and formerly of Santa Rosa, NM died Monday, June 21, 2004 at Presbyterian Hospital following an extended illness. Larry was born November 22, 1940 in Anton Chico, NM to the home of Lorenzo A. Marquez Sr. and the former Margarita Baca. Larry attended schools at Santa Rosa, New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, NM and Highlands University in Las Vegas, NM. Following his graduation Larry worked for the NM Department of Motor Vehicles in Santa Fe. For many years Larry owned and operated the Square Deal Grocery Store in Santa Rosa. Larry made his home in Albuquerque for the past 15 years working as a licensed insurance agent; he most recently worked for ING Insurance. Larry was active in the Santa Rosa community where he served on the Santa Rosa School Board for several years, was a volunteer fire fighter, and past member of the Santa Rosa Lions Club; he was also a member of the Board of Regents of Luna Vocational Technical School in Las Vegas and a member of the Board of Regents of NMMI in Roswell. Larry loved to compete in marathon runs across the state and across the country. He also enjoyed hiking, and fishing. He was a loving son, father, brother, and friend. His family will dearly miss him. Larry was preceded in death by his father, Lorenzo A. Marquez Sr. in 1965 and a sister, Sylvia Ann Marquez in 1991. Survivors include his mother Margaret Marquez of Santa Rosa; three sons Rance Marquez of Idaho; Miguel Marquez of Los Angeles, CA; Santiago Marquez and wife Carla of Colorado Springs, CO; a daughter Alicia Marquez of Los Angeles, CA; the mother of his children Tinka Castitoni of Rio Rancho, NM; one brother Richard J. Marquez of Santa Fe, NM; two sisters Patricia Martinez and her husband Edwardo of El Paso, TX; and Lorella Marquez Ritchie and husband Frank of Las Vegas, NM. Rosary services will be held at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 23, 2004 from St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Santa Rosa; Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated from the church at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, June 24, 2004 with Father Nick Nichols officiating. Burial of cremains will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Santa Rosa, NM. Honorary pallbearers will include Frances Baca, Antonette Baca, Bernice Smith-Fleming, Martin Smith, Ron Nelson, Mike Gallegos, Gilbert Baca, and Boni Baca. MCWHORTER -- Gayle Boyle McWhorter, 41, of Abilene, TX, passed away on Friday, June 18, 2004, at her residence. Gayle was born on February 19, 1963 in Albuquerque to Charles Joseph and Betty Gayle (Barger) Boyle, and had graduated from Sandia High School in 1981. She married Gary McWhorter on June 29, 2002 in Abilene, where she had lived for the last six years. She enjoyed working with her arts and crafts and had been a member of Risen Savior Catholic Community here in Albuquerque. Survivors include her husband, Gary McWhorter of Abilene; her daughter, Renee Michaleen Boyle of Albuquerque; her parents, Charles "Joe" and Betty Boyle of Albuquerque; her brother, Cmdr. Patrick Kevin Boyle, USN, currently stationed in Iraq, and his wife, Cathy of San Diego, CA; a niece, Christie Michelle Boyle of San Diego, CA; her stepson, Nathaniel Wayne McWhorter of Milton, KY; her stepdaughter, Sarah Renee McWhorter of Milton, KY; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, B.J. and Joyce Johnston of Sheridan, AR; and a large extended family with numerous friends and loved ones. PIERCE -- David M. Pierce, 68, a resident of Livermore, CA from 1966 to 1979, Albuquerque since 1980, passed away suddenly at home on Sunday June 20 , 2004. David was born on March 3, 1936, in McPherson, Kansas. He is preceded in death by his mother, Ester Pierce; father, Gerald Pierce. He retired from Sandia Laboratory after 35 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Nora Pierce; sister, Joanne Todd of Boise, ID; sons, Greg and Tim Pierce; daughter, Julie Cooper; step-sons, Todd and Greg Houck; step-daughters, Cecilie Bodman and Tekla Giron; four grandsons, Ryan, Dylan, Cody, Billy; seven granddaughters, Rachel, Mary Caroline, Megan, Nova, Amber, Bianca and Veronica. SELFRIDGE -- Lyndell P. Selfridge, 64, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on June 22, 2004. Lyndell is survived by his wife, Esther Catron; sons, Robert Selfridge and wife, Evelyn, Brian Selfridge and wife, Susan, Jonathan Selfridge and wife, Kimberly; one sister, Martha Dahlberg and husband, Earl; five brothers, Lonnie Selfridge and wife, Pat, Paul selfridge and wife, Georgeann, Larry Selfridge and wife, Tammy, Harry Selfridge, Ernie Selfridge and wife, Suzie; 14 grandchildren; mothers of his children, Ruth Selfridge and Arleen Selfridge; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Lyndell was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mabel Selfridge, a brother, Bill Selfridge; sisters, Lana Peterson, Eloise Ballew, Mabel Gordon and Sue Baker; granddaughter, Kylee and a grandson, Joshua. SHIPPY -- Homer Charles Shippy Homer Charles Shippy died on Sunday, June 20, 2004 a little over one month shy of his 96th birthday, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Homer Shippy was born on July 31, 1908 to Harriet Seeley Shippy and Leroy Lancing Shippy. Homer was born in Fayette, Iowa and grew up in Limon, Colorado. He went to high school in Denver, CO, graduating in 1927. He taught in a country school for six years and then went to the Colorado State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in Fort Collins. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1936 and taught in Colorado until he moved to Silver City, New Mexico in 1946. He taught physics, chemistry and general science at Silver City High School for 15 years. While teaching, he obtained a Master of Arts from the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in Las Cruces in 1953. In 1962, he moved to Gallup, where he taught science and mathematics in the Gallup Junior High School for ten years. He retired from teaching in 1973, having taught for a total of 43 years. Homer was awarded Hall of Fame membership by the National Education Association of New Mexico "In recognition of distinguished service to the children of New Mexico, for contributions to the advancement of the teaching profession, and for devotion to the ideals of public education." Homer married Amelia Giles in 1940. They had two daughters: Amelia Ellen and Jean Ann. Homer and Amelia moved to Albuquerque, in 1976, to be near their two grandchildren. Homer and Amelia celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on August 15, 1990. Amelia died in 1995. Homer is survived by Ellen Shippy of Albuquerque, and Jean Ann Witherspoon and her husband, Phil of Albuquerque; and two grandsons, Adrian Witherspoon and his wife, Tina, of Bothell, Washington; and Colin Witherspoon of Phoenix, Arizona. The Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 pm Saturday, June 26, 2004 at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Frank Yates officiating. THOMPSON -- Dorothy Morris Thompson 93, beloved and devoted mother and grandmother passed away on Saturday, June 19, 2004. She is survived by her sons Chuck Thompson and wife Clare, and Biff Thompson, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren Bill Merrill, Nathan Thompson, Kaleena Thompson and Casey Thompson. She is preceded in death by her husband William M. Thompson and daughter Carol Nell Merrill. A resident of El Paso, Texas until 1983, she was an elementary school teacher for more than 25 years and a member of St. Clement's Episcopal Church. She moved to Albuquerque in 1983 to be near her children and grandchildren. A very caring person, she blessed the lives of those who knew her. We will miss her deeply. VANOVER -- Viola Hubbard went home to heaven June 22, 2004. She was born March 25, 1916 to Jerry Marion and Mazy (Hubbard) Hubbard at their farm on the north fork of Pound River, Wise County, VA. She married John Paul Vanover in 1935. Elizabeth Joan (Mrs. John) Roberts, Phyllis Jane (Mrs. Wayne) Costley and John Paul (Isabel Montano) Vanover, Jr. were born to them. During WWII they worked in Detroit, MI where our gentle mother, doing her part, inspected and packed guns. They came to NM in 1949 to a new life and the births of three more children, Mary Gayle (Mrs. Roger) Maggard, Deborah Lynn (Mrs. David) Standfier and James Mark Vanover. John Paul Senior, Phyllis and Mark have preceded her in death, as have her sisters Ethel, Ella, Della, Ada and Nella and brothers Marshall, Arthur and Tollie. She liked to say that three wonderful things happened to her after coming to New Mexico, three more children, finding her beloved Church of the Nazarene and becoming a nurse at Presbyterian Hospital. She retired 25 years ago. A true Virginia belle, a devoted Christian, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great great grandmother, and friend. Everyone who knew her was touched by her loving compassion and grace. "Her children shall rise up and call her blessed."
