ABRAMS -- Charles Robert Abrams, 79, a resident of Albuquerque, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004. He was a devoted husband and father. Charles is survived by his wife of 45 years, Anne Abrams of Albuquerque; children, Lori and husband, Eddie of Columbus, OH, Lance and wife, Gayle of Mt. Prospect, IL, Lane of Las Vegas, NV, and Lise and husband, David of Gainesville, FL; one grandchild, Naomi; brother, Shimon of Israel; and sister, Sylvia of New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lynne. Charles was born in New York City to Louis and Hannah Abrams on January 16, 1925. He graduated with master's degrees from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Princeton University. He was an aerospace engineer who worked for the Naval Air Development Center in Warminster, Pennsylvania, for 30 years, and following his retirement from the Navy, he subsequently worked for Sperry in Albuquerque for several years. Services were held Friday, April 2, 2004, 8:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, with Rabbi Arthur W. Flicker presiding. AFTON-POOLE -- Margaret "Maggie" Renne Afton-Poole, 57, a resident of Albuquerque, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004. She is survived by her son, Claude DeMenezes and wife, Krista; grandchildren, Keneth and Joseph of Las Vegas, NV; daughter, Shirley Walker of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Krisina, Kristofer and Kristal of TN; brother, Jonathan and wife, Judith Poole of South Huntington NY; sister, Helen and husband, Gilbert Newman of Berkley CA; brother, Gregory Daniels of Glandale CA; and many nieces and nephews. She was a member of Eastern Star, San Marcial Chapter Albuquerque and a lifetime member of Eastern Star Chapter #133 in South Pasadena CA. She was a passionate Teddy Bear Collector. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 3 2004 at 10:00 a.m. in the Eastern Star chapter of San Marcial, 3914 Silver SE Albuquerque.

ANDERSON -- Phyllis Warren Anderson passed away at Cortez, CO on Thursday, April 1, 2004 at the age of 89. She was born May 27, 1914 the daughter of Ralph Clinton and Laura Jane (McIntyre) Parsons in Gloucester, Mass. Phyllis resided in Albuquerque, N.M. from 1949 to 2000. While living there she was a member of Eastern Star and Amarath. In 2000, Phyllis moved to the Cortez area to be near her daughter, Jane. She became a member of the Montelores Baptist Church. Surviving Phyllis are her beloved daughter, Jane Schurr and her husband, Terry of Cortez; grandchildren, Terra Graf and husband, Terrill and Clint Schurr and wife, Kris all of Pleasant View, CO.; and great grandchildren, Bailey and Kacey Schurr. Preceding Phyllis in death are her husband, Everett Anderson; four sisters and one brother. Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Phyllis Anderson with Madison House, 120 S. Madison Ave., Cortez, Colo. 81321. No services are planned. Arrangements are being made through the Ertel Funeral Home.

ANDREWS -- Willene Andrews, 70, passed away Thursday, April 1, 2004. She is survived in death by 2 sons, Mike Andrews and wife, Stanlie of Albuquerque and Andy Andrews and wife, Sandi of Mission Viejo, CA; daughter, Connie Collis and husband, Dave of San Ysidro, NM; 2 brothers, Bob Foster and wife, Lenore of Albuquerque, Bud Foster and wife, Mildred of Yuma, AZ; sisters-in-law, Martha Andrews of T or C,NM and Doll Griffith and husband, Jack of LaMesilla, NM; grandchildren, Charles and wife, Terri, Larry and wife, Davrie, Darlene and husband, Donald, Richard and wife, Connie, Michael and wife, Shonda, Robert and wife, Lesla, Amanda, Kellyn and husband, Kyle and Brette; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Willene was preceded in death by her husband , Charles L. Andrews, Jr. They had been married for 47 years. Willene spent most of her life in the South Valley of Albuquerque. She was currently living in San Ysidro, New Mexico. She loved being involved with her family and friends, pursuing their favorite activities, especially 4-H and Rodeo. Willene had a wonderful talent for making things out of wood. Some of her families most cherished items are antique furniture that she restored. Friends were an important part of her life, making and maintaining those relationships was very important to her. Willene struggled with illness in her later years, but never waivered in her devotion to family and friends. She will be deeply missed. BARBER -- JoAnne D. Barber, 67, a former longtime resident of Albuquerque, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004. She is survived by her son, David Barber and wife, Penelope of Albuquerque; daughter, Tanya K. Larson and husband, Donald Otto of Phoenix, AZ; son, Thomas Barber of Prairie Hill, TX; grandchildren, Louis J. Kelemen IV, Tiffany Kelemen, Ashley Otto and Bethany Jean Barber; sister, Patricia Wyne and husband, Ben of Castle Rock, AZ; nephews, Benjamin Wyne and wife, Barbara of Albuquerque and Michael Wyne and wife, Kelly; and niece, Andrea Wyne Smith and husband, Tom, all of Arizona. Mrs. Barber was preceded in death by her father, Harry T. Driver; mother, Althea Driver; and husband, Rudolph V. Barber. She was a strong supporter and Certified Disaster Specialist with American Red Cross. Mrs. Barber loved to square dance and travel. She will be greatly missed. BARELA -- Ruth Estela Barela, 78, a resident of Albuquerque for 56 years passed away on Tuesday, March 30, 2004. She was born in Holman, NM on Sunday, September 6, 1925. She attended McCurdy Mission School in Santa Cruz, NM and went on to attend York College in Nebraska, and then married Ramos Barela on June 1, 1949. Ruth was a teacher in the Albuquerque schools for nearly forty years. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and loved by all. She is survived by her husband, Ramos Barela; two daughters, Iona Barela and Ivalee Rene Soria and husband, Randy Soria; four grandchildren, Mariah Barela, Kevin, Kaylyn and Kelly Soria; and two sisters, Marcia Lucero and Helen Dyer and husband, Denzel Dyer. The family wishes to thank, Dr. Sheila Ahmadi, Dr. David Robbins, Dr. Zakia Bell, nurse and case manager, Paula Merriam, the Heartland Hospice Services and the Angels of Assistance. BLOUNT -- Carrie-Mae MacNair Blount passed away on Monday, March 29, 2004. She was born in New Jersey, the daughter of Walter Archer MacNair and Vernna-Mae Growt MacNair, and graduated from Goucher College in Towson, Maryland. During a visit to New Mexico she met and later married her husband of fifty-one years, Robert J. Blount. Survivors include daughter Susan Blount Wiarda, husband Kevin Wiarda, and son Russell Cole Wiarda; son Lawrence Carter Blount, wife Michelle Kaeser Blount, daughter Emily Susan Blount, and son Matthew Robert Blount; daughter Holly Blount Laird, husband J. Michael Laird, and sons Charles Michael Laird and Jon Ross Laird; and special friend Karen Lou Carlson. Her innate sense of fairness was upset during an election ballot count at a meeting. This lead to formal study then to becoming a Professional Registered Parliamentarian and ultimately President of the National Association of Parliamentarians. She served as teacher, consultant, and convention parliamentarian for local, national, and international organizations. She continued her membership and active participation in the Pi Beta Phi fraternity after college, and worked nearly every year with the chapter on campus at UNM, as well as with other pan-hellenic groups nationally. Carrie-Mae believed in giving back to the community through volunteer activity. A favorite was serving as a member and chairman of Albuquerque Crime Stoppers in its early and formative years. She was a long-time member of the Junior League of Albuquerque and served on many community boards. Carrie-Mae enjoyed being a wife and mother, reading, sewing, skiing, water skiing, and was an avid fan of college women's and men's basketball. High on the list of her special friends are the doctors, nurses, and staff at The University of New Mexico Cancer Research and Treatment Center who helped her battle the disease for twenty years. CHAVEZ -- Geraldine Chavez passed on Thursday, March 25, 2004. She was a longtime resident of Emeryville, CA where she was an arts and crafts teacher and crossing guard. She later became an instructional assistant for Berkeley Unified School District. She leaves behind Rose Archuleta of Albuquerque, Jerry and Seilala Chavez of Modesto, CA, Antionette, Daniel and Sophia Chavez of Emeryville, Gilbert and Margie Chavez of Hayward, Raymond and Jessica Chavez of Castro Valley. She also leaves 17 grandchildren, Joseph, Angela, Amanda, Leeanna, David, Jacob, Erika, Charles, Anthony, RayRay, Paul, Christian, Carmen, Marley, Tomas, Mathew, Jerry and one unborn. She was preceded in death by Jerry Chavez, Sr. Services were held at the Grant Miller-John Cox Mortuary at 2850 Telegraph Ave. in Oakland, CA. A viewing was held in her honor on Thursday, April 1, 2004 followed with a Rosary. Services in Albuquerque are at Holy Family Catholic Church at 9:30 a.m. on Monday April 5, 2004. CURL -- Duane A. Curl, 77, a resident of Corrales, died on Wednesday, March 31, 2004. Duane was born on August 21, 1926 in Tyndall, South Dakota to Walter L. Curl and Nettie Felton. He is preceded in death by his parents; and his three sisters, Viola Williams, Beulah Gunn, and Sylvia Vilhauer. Duane is survived by his wife, Ivy (Romero) Curl; his daughters, Karen Gray of Madison, AL, Twyla Morford and husband, Charles of Redding, CA; step-children, Judi Bowman, Bob Schenk and wife, Debbie of Rio Rancho, NM; a special nephew, Glen Vilhauer and wife, Faye of Bailey, CO; a special niece, Lana Williams and husband, Will of Littleton, CO; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and numerous other nieces and nephews Duane was an avid reader and enjoyed his time outdoors. He spent a lot of time RV'ing and working on jigsaw puzzles. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Post 611. DARST -- Robert J. Darst, age 70, passed away Monday, March 29, 2004. He grew up near Cleveland, OH and has lived most of his life either in the Cleveland area or here in Albuquerque. He had been a resident here for the last five years. Robert is survived by his wife, Josie, a native of Albuquerque; his daughter, Diana Schubert of Lacey, WA; and two grandsons, Isaiah Schubert and Joshua Schubert, also of Lacey, WA. A Memorial Service will be held to celebrate his life at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 3, 2004 at Christ Unity Church, 9800 Candelaria NE. EBY -- Ida May "Pat", born Mary 12, 1915 in St. Joseph, MO to Raymond S. and Ida Le Blanc Sentney. Her father raised registered Morgan horses and farmed in Hutchinson, KS. She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1933 and attended Hutchinson Junior College. In 1937 she married Maurice J. Eby who was with 20th Century Fox. During WWII together they had a professional photography studio. In 1947, because of his health, the family moved to Las Vegas, NM continuing with another photographic studio. Taking a position at NMSU the family moved to Las Cruces, NM in 1952, Maurice passed away in 1967 and she then moved to Albuquerque. Ida May had a long and interesting life; at an early age (in the 1920's) she traveled with her parents through southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. She worked for the Hutchinson Police Department; she was a professional photographer, being published and exhibited internationally. She also worked as a floral designer and was an accomplished fine artist. In later years Ida May did restoration work on Native American art, pottery and kachinas for several galleries and museums throughout the southwest. Ida May is survived by her daughter, Maurcena Eby Wells of Albuquerque; cousins, Shirley LeBlanc Blady and Andre LeBlanc of New Orleans; "second daughter" and close friends, Marsha and Jim Cramer of Mesa, AZ; dear friends, Anita Da and family of San Ildefonso, NM, Anne and Leroy C'de Baca, Peter Wells, Rowena Demaree, Billye and Lucky Boyd all of Albuquerque. Cat companions Julio, Silky and Thai, (Mother, I always loved you and will miss you.) She was catholic, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced. GILL -- Tony P. Gill, 88, of Albuquerque , died March 31, 2004. Tony was born in Shelburn, Indiana on May 27, 1915, to Joe and Katie Gill. He joined the military in 1942 and became a pilot in the Army Air Corps. He flew 17 combat missions in a B-17 bomber in WWII, before being shot down in Denmark returning from a bombing raid over Poland. He was able to avoid capture and after recovering from injuries, continued to fly for the Air Force. He logged over ten thousand flying hours before retiring in 1965. He flew for local air carriers until 1975. Tony is survived by his wife of 57 years, Renee; and his three children and their spouses, Pam Gill and Chris Boyle of South Beach, OR, Sandra and Gary White of Dallas, TX, and Phil Gill and Jodi Camrud of Billings, MT; and three grandsons, Robert Crawford III of Minneapolis, MN; Michael Crawford of McLean, VA, and Greg Crawford of Dallas, TX. Tony was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who loved the outdoors, good books, and a fine glass of wine. This kind and gentle man will be missed by all who knew him. GUTIERREZ-ORTIZ-CORONA -- Margaret Gutierrez-Ortiz-Corona, age 72, passed away at home surrounded by her loved ones, March 31, 2004. HINES -- Marilyn M. Hines, 69, passed away on March 25, 2004. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Billie C. Hines; sister, Charlotte Moore; daughter, Debra Hines-Eisenhour and husband, Don; son, Joseph Hines; granddaughters, Jessica and Emma; sister-in-law, Carolyn Moore; nephew, Phil Moore and wife, Jan; and niece, Susan Moore. She was preceded in death by her parents, J. Ross and Edna Moore; and brother, Marvin Moore. She loved her family, friends, church and her horses. For 31 years she was employed by Balkcom & Pearsall CPA. NORSWORTHY -- Dorothy M. Norsworthy, age 89, years young and a resident of Belen, New Mexico peacefully joined the Lord on Thursday, April 1, 2004. Born in Glendale, Arizona and a longtime resident of Yuma, Arizona, she worked for 30 years for Southern Pacific Railroad and retired to the Albuquerque area in 1975. Dorothy was loved by everyone whose life she touched and lived her life with exuberance. She was a rock hound and had a great love for the New Mexico desert and its mountains. She was active in the Del Rio Senior Center and enjoyed singing with the chorale group. She will be remembered for her love and generosity to all people. She is survived by her son, Bill Brown; and her grandchildren, John, Tim and Danny Gray, Carl, Jon, and Pamela Sanders, Keren Whitney and their families, including 11 great grandchildren and many extended family members. Dorothy has requested to be cremated, and family and friends are planning a private celebration of her life. Her family and friends would like to thank everyone for their support and prayers, especially these last few weeks. PHELPS -- Betty Phelps, after a period of suffering with pancreatic cancer, passed into peace and freedom from pain on Thursday, March 18th, 2004. She was surrounded by family: beloved husband of 45 years, Tom Phelps, daughter Lynne Phelps and son Scott Phelps. She is also survived by: her daughter, Janet Moredock; son-in-law Jeff Moredock; four grandchildren; Jeffrey, Sarah, Hannah, and Rebekah Moredock; her siblings Harriet Kokjer, Ken Kampfe, DeMaris Jarrett, Darryl Kampfe, and Bill Kampfe; and many nieces and nephews. Born Betty Joyce Kampfe in 1937 in Omaha, Nebraska to parents Esther and Ernst Kampfe, she attended University of Nebraska where she met her husband. As a Navy wife, she lived in many places, and made them all a joy for her family and friends with her positive attitude. Betty visited Albuquerque throughout her life to see relatives and retired here with her husband Tom twelve years ago. She is remembered by all for her warmth, charm, and generosity of spirit, tolerance, and sense of humor. Her family and many friends will sadly miss her. She was active in the community and her church, Holy Cross Lutheran, and was a member of Newcomers, Encore, P.E.O., Prime Time Gang, and was a past president of the Tanoan Niners. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, needlework, arts & crafts, reading, and golf. Her family wishes to thank all of the family and friends who were such a support to the family through her illness, and "Nurse Nancy" and Ashley of the Lovelace Hospice Program. VALENCIA -- Bernard In Loving Memory of Bernard G. Valencia (Benny) April 26, 1918 - April 3, 1974 Our beloved father, Benny, took his place in Heaven on this day, 30 years ago at the young age of 55. He loved life and was devoted to his family and country. We miss you dad and we pray that your rest is peaceful and calm. we will always love you and we will never forget you. WHITE -- Edgar Alexander White passed away, Wednesday, March 31, 2004. He was known as "Slim" or Ed and was born in Wayne County, Missouri, Wednesday, June 7, 1916. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clayton Alexander and Myrtle DeRuse White, and brother, LeRoy and sister, Burneal. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary after almost 67 years of marriage. He leaves a son, Charles and wife, Linda of Las Cruces, NM; grandchildren, Allison, Sarah, Rachel and Daniel; daughter, Barbara Blakley and husband, Larry; grandchildren, Davedda and husband, Chris Marshall, Danette and husband, Justin Edgar; great-grandchildren, Connor and Colby Marshall, Jed, Blakley and Jadyn Edgar; sister, Mazelle; brother's, Paul and David, their families; and many nieces and nephews. He moved with his parents who homesteaded out of Clayton, New Mexico, near a small Bulgarian Community called Sofia. After the death of his father when Slim was only 16, he took great pride in being one of Union County's top ranch hands as he helped his Mother support his younger siblings. He graduated from Clayton High School in 1934. He and Mary met at a basketball game and she proceeded to become a star for her Grenville, NM high school team. In 1937 his father and mother-in-law, Kosta and Zina Dimitroff gave the newly weds a trio of chickens so they would always have something to eat. They continued raising chickens, rabbits, dogs and cats their entire life together. Later Slim served as the New Mexico State Fair Rabbit and Poultry department superintendent. He held this position for 38 consecutive years, never missing a single day during the State Fair. He received numerous trophies and championship recognitions for his outstanding Cornish Bantams. He served as President of the Poultry and Rabbit club for numerous years and often judged the 4H Club poultry and rabbit entries. He provided much love and guidance to these young people. He served his country in the Army during WWII, being stationed in the Philipine Islands. He worked for Robert Porter and Sons, State Distributor, Swartzman Packing Company and retired after many years as warehouse supervisor for K-Mart. Slim was self-taught guitar and fiddle player who loved to sing and perform. He won numerous senior citizen talent contests. He served as Deacon and Song leader for Calvary Baptist Church and Rio Rancho Baptist Church, being one of their charter members along with wife, Mary. His love of God and his faith in Christ was prominent in his life. He was prepared to join God in Heaven. He was a hard working and dependable man. His work ethic and dedication was admired by all. He always provided strength, determination and support to all who touched his life. He was a very loving man who had a great sense of humor and a very positive attitude. While the family is eternally grateful for his almost 88 years on this earth, he will be missed and loved forever. We also thank the love and support provided by the Visiting Angels and the Andrew House staff. Services will be held Monday, 1:00 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Rio Rancho, 528 19th St., Rio Rancho with Pastor Si Budagher. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE. Pallbearers will be Bud Langlois, Herschal Whitford, Jack Corder, Gary McDaniel, John Hedlund, and Jim Cleveland. Honorary pallbearers will be Chris Marshall, Justin Edgar, Daniel Hawkins, Frank Davis, Gene Spence, Allen Goodrich and Duane Spence. Friends may visit French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, Sunday 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts to one's church or favorite charity. WILKINSON -- Arlene Yvonne Wilkinson, 75, died Thursday, April 1, 2004. Arlene was born in Madison, Kansas. She graduated from UNM with a B.A. in Fine Arts. Arlene worked for TVI for many years. She enjoyed music, quilting, reading and spending time with her family. Arlene is survived by her children, Bill Wilkinson and wife, Peggy of Texarkana, TX, Kathy Anaya and husband, Fred of Albuquerque, Dan Wilkinson and wife, Annette of Albuquerque, Kristy Calles and husband, Ambrose of Belen, NM, Carol Plott and husband, Ray of Meridian, ID, Charlie Wilkinson and wife, Elisa of Albuquerque, Misty Torres and husband, Eric of Frisco, TX; grandchildren, Jenny and Amy Wilkinson, Ayla and Kyle Anaya, Dan Jr., Brian, Toria and Gabriel Wilkinson, Kaitlin and Justin Calles, Brooke, Jordan, and Megan Plott, Joseph and Kella Wilkinson, Taryn and Hollyn Torres; brother, Bob Deavenport and wife, Lenora of Albuquerque; 6 nieces and nephews; and many close friends. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1988, Lt. Charles J. Wilkinson, Sr., USN (Ret). Arlene was a member of Monte Vista Christian Church, 3501 Campus Blvd. NE. Services will be held Monday, 12:00 noon, at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel. Interment will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM.
