ARFMAN -- Col. John Frederick Arfman (US Army-Ret), 92, passed away on Saturday, March 13, 2004, in his sleep of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth Ann, in 1997. John was born in New York City on April 5, 1911, graduated from James Monroe High School in NYC in 1929 and went on to attend the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, graduating in 1933 with a degree in Civil Engineering and a commission in the U.S. Army Reserve. After working for Consolidated Edison Co. in his home town of New York City, he accepted an active duty commission in the regular Army in 1938. During the early part of World War II, he helped form and train new engineering battalions throughout the country. While stationed in Boise, Idaho in 1943, he met his wife-to-be, Elizabeth Ann "Ban" Barber, and were married in Greenville, SC, on September 23, 1943. Soon thereafter, John deployed to the Pacific theater where he spent most of his time building airfields and military bases. After the war ended, he was assigned to the Military Advisory Group in Manila, Philippine Islands where his wife joined him in 1946. It was in the Philippines where their first child, John Jr., was born in 1948. Two more sons, Richard Lee and Frederick Christopher, followed in Iowa City, IA, in 1950 and 1951, and daughters, Susan Leigh in New Orleans in 1953 and Joanne Lynn in Albuquerque in 1961. John's last assignment before retiring in 1963 was as the Chief Engineer, Albuquerque District, for the Corps of Engineers. After retiring from the Army, he worked for a private company and then for the State of New Mexico as the Chief Engineer of the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District. In 1972, he retired for good. John is survived by his son, John and his wife, Peggy of Albuquerque; son, Richard, his wife, Kim and daughters, Katie and Maggie of Augusta, GA; son, Fred, his wife, Karen and sons, Calvin and Jake of Albuquerque; daughter, Susan of Albuquerque; and daughter, Joanne Chaplin, her husband, Douglas and children, Justin and Victoria of Rio Rancho, NM. "The Colonel," will be dearly remembered by his children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors. The family would also like to thank all the wonderful angels at both Crossroads Hospice and Maxim Healthcare who helped to fill John's last days with compassion, love, and caring. Services will be held Thursday, March 18, 2004 at 10:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, interment will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. BRIGGS -- Viola Louise "Skippy" Briggs went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 11, 2004, just one week short of her 88th birthday. Skippy was born on March 18,1916 to Minnie Mae and Harry Rowe in Marvel, Colorado. She married Clayton Briggs on December 24, 1935. Clayton and her grandson Gary Joe Briggs preceded her in death. Skippy taught school for 32 years in Colorado, Washington and New Mexico, in Albuquerque she taught at Bandelier and Sandia Base schools. Skippy is survived by her two children, Beverly Briggs of the family home and Gary Briggs and his wife Judie of Las Cruces, NM, she is also survived by four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Bill Rowe and his wife, Audrey; and a sister, Wilma Flaugh. A Memorial Service is planned at a later date in Marvel, Colorado.

CHANDLER -- Verna Chandler, 86, of Las Cruces, NM, died March 14, 2004 at her residence. She was born January 20, 1918 in Seminole, OK to the home of Emma and Joe Ginnings. Verna was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ and had been a member of the Church of Christ in Las Cruces for over 25 years. She graduated from New Mexico State University in 1941 with Math and Education Degrees. Verna taught school in Roswell, NM for 25 years before retiring and moving back to Las Cruces. She had a great love for her church and family, enjoyed her grandchildren deeply, and was always available to offer help with their math. She enjoyed being involved in the local German Shorthaired Pointer Club, where she was the active treasurer for many years. Verna will be remembered as a strong woman with a great sense of humor and a stonger love for her family and church. Survivors include 2 sons and daughters-in-law: Ray and Shirley Chandler of Tijeras, NM, and Terry and Janet Chandler of Las Cruces, NM; 2 daughters and 1 son-in-law: Judy Barrett of Tijeras, NM, and Jolita and Ernie Barnes of Tijeras, NM; 2 sisters: Irene Wall and Juanita Barbee, both of Portales, NM; 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by 9 of her siblings including her twin brother, Vernon Ginnings. Graveside services will be held Friday, March 19, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Portales Cemetery.

CHERRYHOLMES -- Willie Cherryholmes. To honor his life, his daughter and grandchildren have arranged a memorial tribute to rejoice in his life. Mr. Cherryholmes was a Building Official with the City of Rio Rancho since 1987 and was the Building Inspection Supervisor since 2002. Mr. Cherryholmes was a vital part of the development in the City of Rio Rancho and was well respected. The memorial is scheduled for 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at Haynes Park in Rio Rancho. GREENSTREET -- Leora G. Greenstreet died on March 14, 2004 in Albuquerque. She had been a resident of Bear Canyon Estates since 1997. Leora was born in Oklahoma on July 12, 1914. She spent her early years in southeast Kansas and later in Lebanon, MO, where she met and married John Greenstreet in 1937. They lived in Glenns Ferry, ID, from 1943 to 1970, when they moved to Pocatello, ID. John died in 1984 and Leora remained there until 1997. She is survived by a brother, John Holler, of Sonora, CA; a son, J.E. Greenstreet, and his wife, Helen, of Albuquerque; a daughter, Doris Anne Brown, and her husband, Charlie, of Sun Lakes, AZ; four grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren. She was a wonderful mother, friend, and neighbor, and will be greatly missed. Interment will be in Pocatello, ID. HALLER -- Daniel J. Haller, age 58, husband of Cindy Haller (nee)Ruhl, died on Monday, March 15, 2004 from injuries sustained in an auto accident in Albuquerque on March 12. He was born on August 9, 1945 in Seven Hills, Ohio to Daniel P. and Ursula Birk Haller. Upon graduation from high school, he entered the army, serving the majority of his three-year duty at Brooks Army Hospital and Ft. Sam Houston in the medical corps division in San Antonio, Texas. While there, he began his university education and upon discharge received a Bachelor of Science degree in math from Ohio University. He began his career as a CPA with Touche Ross in Dayton, Ohio, in the auditing and later, management services department. A client firm, Nord Resources, hired him as chief accountant for one of their overseas mining operations in Sierra Leone, Africa. Two years later, he continued with Nord at their headquarters in Albuquerque as assistant controller and later, as treasurer, also earning an M.B.A. from the University of New Mexico. Career change led him to Houston, Texas, where he began a 21-year career in executive search and outplacement services. Dan's sporting interests included tennis, windsurfing and participating in the charity MS 150 bike rides from Houston to Austin, and the "Hotter Than Hell" bike races in Wichita Falls. He was also a 20-year veteran of JSC Toastmasters in Houston, and most currently the Honeywell Sunrisers Toastmasters. In 1999, Dan joined the Southwest Airlines' family in Houston as a reservation sales agent. Dan and Cindy's affinity for New Mexico brought them back to Albuquerque later in the year, where Dan continued with the airline. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Terry and husband, David Simko of Chagrin Falls, Ohio. A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 18, 2004, at 10:00 a.m., at Gate of Heaven Mausoleum Chapel, 7999 Wyoming Blvd. NE. INBODEN -- Edward G. Inboden, 85 of Chatsworth, IL, formerly of Albuquerque, died Friday, March 12, 2004. He is survived by his wife, Muriel Inboden; daughter, Carol Flowers of Albuquerque; four stepchildren, Gary Brandt and wife, Joy of Magnolia, DE, Beverly Zorn and husband, John of Piper City, Donna Shriver and husband, Mike of Chatsworth, IL, and Jim Brandt and wife, Sue of Kankakee, IL; and six stepchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Grise in 1995; granddaughter, Cindy Lee Merrick in 1968; two brothers; and one sister. Edward was born June 27, 1918 in Enon Valley, PA to George and Minnie Stephenson Inboden. He married Muriel Brandt in November 1995 in Chatsworth. Edward served his country during WWII in the Army Air Corps and later retired from General Electric. He was a member of Masonic Hiram Lodge 13, a 32nd-degree member of Scottish Rite of Santa Fe, and a 50-year member of Ballut Abyad Shrine Center. Edward was a charter member of the safety patrol which later became the Ansars where he was president numerous times. He also belonged to the American Legion and VFW Post 49. JACKSON -- James E. Jackson, 59, a resident of Albuquerque since 1969, died Thursday, March 11, 2004. He is survived by his spouse, Beverly Jackson of Albuquerque; daughters, Monica Jackson-St. John and husband, Christian of Albuquerque, Sherry Jackson of Scottsdale, AZ, and Christie Jackson of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Alex Neff, Brittney Neff, Alexxa Nieto, and Sabrina Nieto; brothers, Hubert Payne and wife, Myrtle B. of Geiger, AL, and Bobby Williams of Oklahoma City, OK; sisters, Ellayne McCoy of St. Louis, MO, and Barbara Turner of Chandler, AZ; mother-in-law Bobbie Bracken of Albuquerque; sisters-in-law, Jacqueline Casteel and husband, Jesse and Sondra Isaminger and husband, John, all of Albuquerque; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. KLUVER -- Helen Lyons Kluver, formerly of Albuquerque and Santa Fe, peacefully died at home at Aspen Ridge Lodge in Los Alamos on Sunday morning, March 14, 2004. She was 93. She was born in Excelsior, Minnesota in 1911, the eldest of seven children. She experienced and rose to all the challenges and changes of the 20th century, through which she lived. She was a "flapper", who loved their 1931 Model A. She never forgot the depression and its lessons. During World War II, she was a plane spotter in California during the constant air raid alerts and then began her career working for the military in the Panama Canal Zone. After the war, she moved to Albuquerque and worked for eighteen years at Sandia National Laboratories. She is survived by her two daughters, Carol Thomson of Santa Fe, and Candace Frostenson of Los Alamos, and sons-in-law, James Thomson and Carl Frostenson. Helen's special delight were grandchildren, Anne, James, Chris and David Thomson, and Day and Sky Frostenson, and four great grandchildren. A private Service of Burial of the Dead will be held at the Episcopalian Parish Church of St. Barnabas on the Desert in Scottsdale, Arizona. She will join her husband of fifty-one years, Wessel Kluver, who died in 1985, in the Memorial Garden at St. Barnabas Church. She always danced when she could and was ready for the next adventure. May the Lord bless her and keep her; May the Lord make His face shine upon her, and be gracious unto her; May the Lord lift up His countenance upon her and give her peace. MISCH -- Allen Misch, M.D., 78, a resident of Albuquerque since 1987, died Sunday, March 14, 2004. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Misch; daughters, Kathryn Newman and husband, Karl of Minneapolis, MN, Patricia MacKay and husband, Donald of Milwaukee, WI and Jeanne Parker and husband, Douglas of Dallas, TX; and son, David Misch and wife, Debora of Lakeland, FL; five grandchildren; brother, Clarence Misch of Independence, WI; sister, Petronella Heisserer of St. Paul, MN. Dr. Misch was a Radiologist at Presbyterian Hospital 1987 to 1995. Dr. Misch was a radiologist in Sheboygan, WI from 1972 to 1987. He spent three years at St. Luke's Hospital in Milwaukee completing training as a radiologist. From 1955 to 1969, Dr. Misch was a general practitioner in Cedarburg, WI. MORA -- Florenio Mora, 88, passed away on March 15, 2004, at his home in Albuquerque surrounded by his family, friends and caregivers. He is survived by his son, Jose A. Mora and Mary G. Wilson of Albuquerque and Abo, NM. Also surviving are his sister, Adelina Montoya; his brother, Juan B. Mora, both of Albuquerque; many nieces and nephews, extended family members and loving friends. Mr. Mora was born in Chilili, NM and was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Carolina Aragon Mora in 1995; his parents, Manuel and Virginia Tapia Mora; and seven brothers and sisters. Like many New Mexicans, Mr. Mora moved to Albuquerque in the early 1950s seeking employment. An industrious man all of his life and a rancher most of his life, Mr. Mora retired from Sandia National Laboratories in 1977. A Rosary for Mr. Mora will be recited on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, 5311 Phoenix Ave. NE. ORTEGA -- Ernest Ortega, 49, a resident of Anaheim, Ca. and formerly of Albuquerque passed away on March 11, 2004. Mr. Ortega is the beloved husband of 31 years to Jo Anne Ortega. Mr. Ortega is also survived by one son, Christopher E. Ortega; one daughter, Tiffany N. ROBINSON -- Elijia Robinson, born October 19, 1954 passed away unexpectedly in the loving arms of her family and friends on Monday, March 15, 2004. Elijia was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Dulcinea Chavez; her mother-in-law, Doris Robinson and her brother-in-law Ray Gomez. Elijia is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Elgin (Robbie) Robinson; her daughter, Vanessa Robinson whom she loved and adored; her father-in-law, Elgin Robinson, and her special Goddaughter Cassandra (Mannie) Salazar who owned a special piece of her heart. Elijia is also survived by her siblings, Rosie (Lea) Gomez, Alejandro (Bebe) Chavez and wife Monica, Johnny Chavez and wife Tam, Martha Salazar and husband Fred, Eric Chavez and wife Angelica, Jackie Chavez and husband Dennis, Alejandro (Critter) Chavez and her sister-in-law, Georgia Gallegos. Also surviving are several nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins. Mrs. Elijia Robinson had a dream. Her self-less, tireless dream included over 855 other people. Those 855 other people are 9-1-1 emergency operators, police radio dispatchers, who are the link between the citizen's of the State of New Mexico and emergency police, fire and ambulance/rescue services. Our dear Elijia wanted to see the fulfillment of a bill passing through the New Mexico State Legislature and the Senate that would grant twenty-year retirement for all law enforcement emergency operators. Elijia had been working diligently for this, making many, many trips on her own time and finances to Santa Fe, meeting with State Representatives, Legislatives and Senators concerning the fulfillment of this bill. This was her dream, which included so many others. Mrs. Robinson had been a telecommunicator since 1973, when she was hired by the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department as a radio dispatcher/9-1-1 operator. She was a dedicated employee, and her accomplishments included promotions to a certified trainer, instructor and supervisor of Communications for the Bernalillo County Communications Department. She was, most of all, a wonderful human being, who was caring, friendly, funny, sincere, and one who will be greatly missed. Visitations will be held on Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Stover Chapel of Garcia Mortuary. A rosary will be recited on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the St. Anne Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. also at the St. Anne Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the San Jose de Armijo Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Chris Sanchez, Tim Brown, Mike Harpster, Andy Brads, Capt. Jones, Norbert Montoya, Gary Gomez and Johnny Tapia. SALAZAR -- Maredith "Mimi" A. Salazar, a resident of Los Lunas, NM peacefully passed away at home on Monday, March 15, 2004. She is survived by Chris J. Salazar and their children, Diana G. Watley and her husband, Clarence and their son and four daughters; Frank R. Salazar and his wife, Patricia and their son and two daughters; and Chris Jo Salazar and her son; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her youngest son, Mark a. Salazar in 1981. SANDOVAL -- Pilar T. Sandoval, 84, went home to be with the Lord on March 15, 2004. She was born on September 5, 1919 in Alameda, New Mexico. Visitations will be held on Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Eighth Street Chapel of Garcia Mortuary with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Refreshments will follow in the Celebration of Life Room also at Garcia Mortuary. WONG -- Henry L. Wong Sr. (Wong,Chew Pien), 64, loving husband, father, father- In-law and grandfather passed away on March 11, 2004. Born in Canton, China and immigrated to the United States in 1953. He was a resident of Albuquerque since 1967. He owned and operated The Chinese Garden Restaurant for 16 years. He was a renowned Chef in Chinese Cuisine and other fine foods. He is survived by his loving wife, Jolene J. Wong; his son, Henry L. Wong Jr. and wife, Mellissa; grandsons, Christopher and Matthew Wong all of Albuquerque. He is also survived by several brothers and sisters; and several other honorary grandchildren. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at Fitzgerald & Son from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. with Wake Service to immediately follow.
