QUARGNALI -- Paola Bianca Quargnali passed on Sunday evening in the peace of her home on Old Town Road in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is survived by her children, Amina and Alessandro, her son-in-law David, her daughter-in-law Joanna, her sisters Enza and Lia, and many other loving extended family members. Born in Rome, Italy on 8 July, 1940, Paola first came to the United States (Los Angeles) in 1958 as a high school exchange student in the American Field Service Program. She returned to Italy to become an assistant to the Minister of Cultural Affairs, involved in the recovery of Italian art treasures lost and stolen during the second World War. In the early 1960s, Paola returned to the United States, this time to join her sister Enza Quargnali and to attend the University of New Mexico, where she achieved a Master of Arts Degree in Romance Languages. She was a 1973 Fulbright Grant recipient to Argentina to study the works of Manuel Mujica Lainez. Paola taught Italian at the University of New Mexico for many years. She retired in 1995 from Albuquerque Public Schools, where she taught Spanish, Italian, and French to hundreds of students at Cibola High School. She was the Vice-Consul of Italy for New Mexico for over 18 years. A paladin of art and culture, Paola continually sought to foster and encourage cross-cultural knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of Italy. The great passion of Paola's life, however, was her involvement with La Romita School of Art, the non-profit art school that she co-founded and directed with her sister Enza Quargnali. For 38 years, Paola and Enza introduced thousands of artists, both neophytes and accomplished painters, to the beautiful Umbrian hill-towns and people that they loved. Her family will continue her life's work at La Romita School.First diagnosed with breast cancer in 1981, Paola finally lost her long and valiant battle. ROARK -- Lt. Col. Carl F. Roark (U.S. Army ret.), a resident of Albuquerque for 12 years, died on November 29 after a very long, courageous, and always upbeat struggle with emphysema. He leaves his wife of 59 years, Geneva P. Roark, memories of a lifetime of love and devotion. He leaves his three children the responsibility to carry on; knowing that he had shown them how, and he leaves his son-in-law and his daughters-in-law his never ending gratitude for his seven grandchildren. Lt. Col Roark was born in 1922 in Allen, Oklahoma. He was the third of Bess and Frank Roark's seven children. His father called him Rusty because of his hair and his family and friends called him Russ long after his hair had turned snow white. The Roark family was raised in the farm country of Oklahoma and Kansas. Russ graduated from high school in Gypsum, Kansas, and joined the army in 1940. He rose through the ranks, was commissioned in 1942 and proudly served as an artillery officer for 30 years. His overseas assignments included the Pacific theater, Japan, Burma, Germany, and Vietnam. His decorations included the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Joint Services Commendation Medal. After completing his military service in 1972, Russ became the Executive Director of the Southern Arizona Cerebral Palsy Foundation in Tucson, Arizona. Over the next twenty years as his love for the children that were served by the foundation grew, he worked his way down to bus driver in order to be able to spend more time with "his kids." He used his skill as a woodworker to make them custom chairs, physical therapy accessories, and toys. He was devoted to the work of the Civitans in Tucson and treasured his fellowship with the members of the Old Pueblo Club. He moved to Albuquerque in 1991 to be closer to his family. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow, he enjoyed the view of the mountains from his patio, and he enjoyed the weather; many times he was able to enjoy all three at once. There will be a service at Trinity at the Marketplace, 2520 Chama. NE, on Wednesday, December 3, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Peter Schoew officiating. Interment with military honors will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. French Mortuary 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE 275-3500

URBAN -- Ron Urban born May 21, 1963 passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2003. He was preceded in death by his Father, Glenn, his brother, Daniel and his obnoxious beloved dog, Zeppelin. Ron spent his teenage years stuffing sopaipillas under the eagle eyes of Lydia and Larry Villanueva who he credited with teaching him what work was all about. Many of his youthful lessons were learned in the company of his 'cousin in crime', Andy Theiler. For the next 19 years he worked under cover of darkness at Phillip's Semi-conductors with his cronies Chris, Jamie, J.R., Dale and Phil. There he met Tarry, his wife, spiritual advisor and partner who he loved the most. Together they included their daughter, Rachel in all their moments of darkness and light. Rachel was most surely Daddy's Angel and will always be. Ron is survived by his Wife, Tarry, his daughter, Rachel, his Mom, Margaret and Jim Weber, his Sister, Lynn and Randy Hannah, his brother Greg and Monica Urban, and his brother, Ken Urban who held us all together. Special thanks to his Uncle and Aunt, Tom and Candy Starkovich and his Aunt Betsy Krzykowski for their loving assistance to Ron and his family in his final days. If there was any wisdom Ron gained that he would want to pass along, it would be that everything that comes into your life is an experience with an opportunity to learn how to do it better and have as much fun with it as you can. His quirky wit and smile lightened up even the darkest hours of his journey home. Ron, as you Rush ahead, leaving only Trails of Vapor, know that we loved you well and look forward to being with you on the other side... if we can coax you off the golf course. Services will be private. Arrangements by: Salazar and Sons Mortuary 400 Third St. SW 247-4124
