Herdejurgen -- Mildred Herdejurgen,"Gram" died Sunday, August 18, 2002 at the age of 95. Born Mildred Gray on January 24, 1907, in Tupelo Mississippi, the youngest daughter of Russell and Margaret Gray she moved, with her ten siblings, to Texas at the age of five. She spoke of riding the train from Mississippi to Texas in 1912, and Mama waking her to see the Mississippi river as they crossed it. It was in Houston that she met and married Johnny Herdejurgen, who passed away in 1975. Together, the couple was blessed with four children. Their eldest son, Jack Herdejurgen, of Houston who passed away in 1992, is survived by wife, Mary. Second oldest son, Ross Herdejurgen and wife, Donna live in Houston TX. Only daughter, Annette and husband, Epifanio Padilla Jr. live in Moriarty NM and youngest son Arthur"Sonny" Herdejurgen and wife, Sylvia also reside in Houston. Gram is also survived by 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and ten great-great grandchildren. Mildred and Johnny moved to Albuquerque in 1945, where they ran a small 2nd Street Café. After Johnny's retirement, Mildred opened Buttons and Bows, a seamstress shop, which she operated for many years, well into her 80's. She worked hard and was proud of the many garments she created, including several wedding dresses and figure skating costumes. If her eyesight hadn't failed, no doubt she would have continued to sew to the end. A strong, self-sufficient woman, she continued to live independently in her Albuquerque home until 1997. Her last years were spent in Edgewood NM, near her daughter, Annette. Gram was a caring mother and grandmother who enjoyed teaching her grandkids to sew, playing dominoes and going fishing. If you called to ask what she was doing, she was likely to say that she was,"Sewing up a storm." A life that spanned a century, 95 years is a very long life indeed, yet the time is brief and seems to pass too quickly. Remember, and she is there. We are never ready to let go, but we also know that she lived a long and good life and deserves to rest. We are pleased to know that she is free from the troubles of this world and the ailment that entrapped her. At last, she will rejoin Jack and once again go fishing with Johnny. Great-grandson, Rev. Dennis Padilla will officiate at the service. Pall bearers are Johnny Padilla, Robert Padilla, Paul Padilla, Christopher Padilla, John Lyn Herdejurgen and Russell Herdejurgen.
