Baker -- Helen Lockwood Baker, 80, passed away on June 28 in Albuquerque. After graduating from Sidney High School in Nebraska she studied nursing at Presbyterian Hospital in Denver, Colorado, where she became a Registered Nurse in 1945. She moved to Texas and worked in tuberculosis hospitals near Kerrville for several years. In 1947 she married Girdo Marion Baker. They had two children, David George and Nancy Jean. Helen Lockwood Baker worked as a Registered Nurse in Colorado, Texas, Kansas and New Mexico. She earned her bachelor's degree in management from Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas in 1979. After earning her bachelor's degree, she worked as a nursing home administrator in Kansas. While living in Kansas she served in the Silver Haired Legislature and ran for the Kansas State Legislature in 1989. She returned to New Mexico in 1993. In retirement she participated in the Senior Olympics winning several local, state and national medals in air gun competition, 100 meter run and shuffleboard. She is survived by her longtime companion, Gwen Baughman; her son, David of Santa Rosa, CA; daughter, Nancy and husband, Brian Tafoya of Albuquerque; her two sisters, Zepha Hinkle of New Prague, Minnesota and Mildred Swanson of Dalton, Nebraska; and her two grandchildren, Brianne and Jacob Tafoya of Albuquerque. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on July 5, 2002 in the garden area at Three Fountains Apartment Complex, 2212 Lester Drive NE. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the New Mexico chapter of the American Diabetes Association.

Benson -- John F. Benson, 70, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 28, 2002. He was preceded in death by his two sons, Keith and Christopher. He leaves behind his loving wife, Celia; seven daughters, two sons, four sons-in-law; two daughters-in-law; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He served honorably in the US Air Foce and the US Marine Corps and retired as a Safety Engineer. He will be greatly missed by the many lives he touched. Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, July 3, 2002 at 9;30 a.m. at Our Lady of Assumption, 811 Guaymas NE. Private burial will take place in Old Mesilla, NM at a later date.

Dorrance -- Mary S. Dorrance, 79, a resident of Albuquerque since 1966 and previous resident of Cimarron, NM, went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 1, 2002. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Alfred A. Dorrance; daughter, Dolores E. Gammon and husband, Edward A; grandson, Edward Eric Gammon and wife, Sherry, all of Albuquerque; brothers, Filbert Sanchez of Santa Fe, Pete Sanchez and wife, Florence of Pueblo, CO and Matt Sanchez and wife, Angie of California; sister, Henrietta Sanchez of Denver, CO; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Mary was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Mass will be celebrated Friday, 9:30 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 1818 Coal SE, with Father Bob Chabot, Celebrante. Gabriele -- Victor W. �Squeaky� Gabriele, 76, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Sunday, June 30, 2002. He is survived by his sons, Vic Gabriele and wife Clara, Fred Gabriele and James P. Gabriele and wife Valerie; daughters, Pamela �Bunny� Gabriele, all of Albuquerque and Jody Evans and husband, Lee of Katy, Texas; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Ellen Wolfe of Long Beach, CA. He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Dorothy M. Gabriele; sister, Betty Toledo; and grandson, Sean Gabriele. Victor was employed by the U.S. Postal Service since 1954. He was an Army Veteran and served as an interpreter during WWII. Victor was also a member of the Elks, The DAV, American Legion Post 13 and numerous other veteran groups. He was a lifetime member of Faith Chapel and a Southwestern Fine Arts Collector and Appraiser. Services will be held Friday, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Rev. Mabel Dawe and Rev. Tom Salmon officiating. Gilsdorf -- Bernice M. Gilsdorf, 85, a resident of Albuquerque, died Sunday, June 30, 2002. Hanrahan -- Michael F. Hanrahan, June 7, 1930 - June 30, 2002. Michael Hanrahan is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Esther R. Hanrahan; five children, Michael Steven and Cindy, Peggy and Tim Martin, Donald, Sandra Cordova, Mike James and Debra; eight grandchildren, Vanessa, Monica, Brandon, Amanda, Chris, Thomas James, Andrea, and Rachel; two sisters-in-law, Arlene Hanrahan and Patsy Reed. Michael served with honor our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War; served with diligence the state of New Mexico as the Secretary of Corrections; served with pride the city of Albuquerque as the Director of the BCDC; served with solidarity and tenacity Laborers as an officer and business agent of I.A.T.S.E. Local 423 as well as an officer on the Executive Board of A.F.L.-C.I.O. His absence will only be physical as his spirit and drive continues to serve those to whom over the many years he lent guidance and taught diligence and individuals in various fields to learn, grow and prosper. He's worked hard to the day and has been a giver all his life and now he rests. In lieu of public good-byes, there will be only a Private Family Service and his wishes are that those who know him will take a moment to reflect on the importance of life and learn, grow and live every minute of every hour of every day to the fullest and never sweat the small stuff.

Lucero -- Anthony M. Lucero (Tony), a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away Saturday, June 29th. Mr. Lucero served in the Navy and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a very respected and prominent businessman during the 70's and 80's with his numerous fruit markets and nightclub. He was instrumental in the start of many Albuquerque businesses, as well as a supporter of a local catholic private school. Mr. Lucero is survived by his sons, Paul and wife Michelle; his grandsons, Paul Michael, Adam and Alex; his son, Michael and wife, Theresa; grandson, Andrew; daughter, Denise and husband, Francisco Javier Jimenez; granddaughter, Gally; daughter, Cynthia and husband, Gene Baca; granddaughter, Adrianne Muniz; son, Greg and girlfriend Bonnie; granddaughter, Madison; son, Andrew and wife, Kay; grandsons, Andrew and Kenneth; granddaughters, Jessica and Lola; daughter, Stephanie Gutierrez; grandson, Fernando; his sisters, Tommy Van Damme and husband, Henry and Isabel Sedillo; brother, Max Lucero and wife, Patty; many many nephews and nieces; and along with special family friends, Leo �Zapata� Armijo, Grace Aragon, Rita Calderon and Peachy McCrae. Maes -- Mary Ann Maes, 81 went to be with the Lord Saturday June 29, 2002 after a long illness. She was a lifelong resident of New Mexico born at Manzano, NM. She was preceded in death by her husband, Epifanio Maes; her father and mother, Tomas and Mercedes Lucero; her brothers, Abel and Amado Lucero. She is survived by her daughter, Gloria Garcia and husband Richard; four beautiful grandchildren, Andrea Garcia, Sara Martinez, Candice Garcia and Christy Garcia; three great-grandchildren, Estrella, James and Mercedes; sisters, Virginia Romero and husband, Margarito, Felia Perea and husband, Nick, Connie Nunez, Isabel Torres and husband Orlando; sister, in-law, Jessie Lucero; many nieces, nephews and close friends. Mary Ann was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2002 with a Rosary to be recited at 4:00 p.m. at St. Bernadette Catholic Church 11401 Indian School Rd NE. Perrault -- Adrian Joseph Perrault, 80, a resident of Bernalillo since 1974, passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2002. Adrian was born April 26, 1922 the son of Joseph Edward and Vivian Marie Young Perrault in Perham, Minnesota. He and his wife came to New Mexico from California. Adrian was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bernalillo. He was a gemologist and made custom jewelry. Adrian served in the US Army during WW II. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Alice; four children, David Perrault of Sacramento, CA, John Perrault and wife Donna of Sonora, CA, Leslie Highiet and husband Jeff of Modesto, CA, and Suzanne Neunam and husband Wayne of Copperopolis, CA; twelve grandchildren and eleven Great-grandchildren; one niece, Yvonne Teichert, one nephew, Christopher J. Heller, both of California. The Visitation will be held today, Wednesday, July 3, 2002 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM followed by the Service at 10:30 AM at the First Baptist Church of Bernalillo, 800 Camino del Pueblo, Bernalillo. Officiating will be Pastor Kenneth Clair. Private interment of cremated remains will take place in Santa Fe at the National Cemetery. Pettefer -- Mary Hilton Holloway Pettefer, 86, a resident of Albuquerque since 1945, died Saturday, June 29, 2002. She is survived by her husband, Edgar D. Pettefer of Albuquerque; son, Randall E. Ribas -- Alfred Ribas, 81, of Corrales died June 18, 2002 in Sandia Hospice Care Center after a brief illness. He was born March 21, 1921 in Brooklyn, NY son of Alfred and Edith Ribas. He is survived by sisters, Alma di Vincenzo of Salt Springs, FL and Alice Miggens of Tom's River, NJ; his daughter, Eve Ribas of Taos; his three sons, Claude Hayward of Tecolotito, NM, Mathew Ribas of Ojo Sarco, NM, Christopher Ribas and wife, Rita Montoya Ribas of Santa Fe; and three grandchildren, Chris' children, Jason and Sophia and Matthew's daughter, Hannah. As a youth growing up in Brooklyn, NY, he attended Brooklyn Technical High School and later joined the Civilian Conservation Corps doing logging in the mountainous region of Oregon. He served in the US Army in a tank division during World War II, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. His technical skills were used in training and in maintaining the communication systems of Sherman tanks. As a civilian, he attended RCA Institute for a year. Al's career was spent mostly as a broadcast engineer, starting out with the Dumont Television Network in NY city, during the early days of TV. He later changed venue to the educational institutions working for Michigan State University in East Lansing, Clark County School District (Las Vegas, NV) and California State University at Northridge. He retired in 1980 and kept himself busy working on his house in Granada Hills, CA and installing and maintaining the sound systems of the Sepulveda Unitarian Universalist Society as a volunteer. He moved to Corrales in 1989, where he again kept himself busy improving his house and volunteering at his church, the Unitarian Universalist Westside Congregation. (UUWC). Al also volunteered building sets for the Albuquerque Little Theatre for several years and always helped whenever he could find a show needing sets, sound or lighting. One of his favorite activities was pulling a hay wagon with his restored Farmal Cub tractor (1948 model) during Corrales festivities. Al expressed his artistic skill creating metal sculptures, using sheet metal, square stock, scraps, even tools and machine parts. He had created a sizeable collection. Much of his work soon to be shown to the public for the first time is of a whimsical nature. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 6, 2002, 4:00 p.m. at the UUWC building, 1650 Abrazo Rd., Rio Rancho. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations to their favorite charity if they wish.

Sarate -- Sarate Juan "Barney" Sarate Jr., 73, passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at his home in Socorro, NM. He was born November 14, 1928 to Juan and Francisquita (Cuellar) Sarate Sr. in Socorro, NM. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Frances, (Barela) Sarate of their home; daughters, Patricia Torres and husband, David of Socorro and Irene Duran and husband, Tony of Odessa, TX; brothers, Stanley Sarate and Leo Sarate both of Socorro; sister, Mary Gonzales of Socorro; grandchildren, Melanie Torres, David Torres Jr. and Caitlin Duran; great-grandson, Damion Gutierrez; and other relatives and friends. Rosary was recited on Friday, June 28, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. at Steadman-Hall Funeral Home. Sierra -- Reyna Sierra, a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother went to be with the Lord on July 1, 2002. She was born in Mexico City, Mexico to Caludio and Margarita Roman Sierra. Her husband, Mauro Nava, preceded her in death in 1993. She is survived by ten children, Gloria Nava, Gonzalo Nava, Jose Nava, Mauro Nava, Julieta Lemke and husband, Raymond, Javier Nava and wife, Lupe, Monica McNeely and husband, Glenn and Rodrigo Nava and wife, Jackie all of Albuquerque, Teresa Ahlstrom and husband, Scott of Austin, TX and Patricia Nava and husband, Thomas of Mexico City, MX; 33 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. this afternoon at Sandia Funeral Care, 7601 Wyoming Blvd NE. Thomas -- Ethel A."Pete" Thomas, age 91, born November 28, 1910 died June 30, 2002 in Albuquerque, NM. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard B. Thomas. She is survived by two daughters, Judy Thomas of NM, Gretchen Ryan and husband, Stevan of KS; one son, Jerry Thomas and wife, Nancy of CO; five grandchildren, Sandra Truly and husband, Ted, Susan Sullivan and husband, Stephen, Matt Thomas and wife, Chandra, Doug Sanchez and wife, Amy, David Sanchez and wife, Larissa; one niece, Carol King and husband, Stephen of PA."Pete" had been a resident of Albuquerque since 1950. During those years she was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, The Presbyterian Hospital Women's Auxiliary and a member of PEO Chapter AN. Turbett -- William W. Turbett, 84, died July 1, 2002 after a lengthy bout with cancer. Born in Bayonne, NJ, he was a highly decorated combat Veteran in WWII. Following his military service, he moved to Albuquerque in 1953 to begin what would be a 40 year career as an insurance company executive. Bill and his wife of almost 50 years, Cynthia, were charter members of the Tennis Club of Albuquerque, and were very active there until Cynthia's death in 1996. Mr. Turbett is survived by his four children, son, Peter Turbett and his wife, Marsha of Houston Texas, son, Thomas Turbett of Albuquerque, daughter, Anne Turbett, M.D. of Las Cruces, and daughter, Nancy Turbett of Albuquerque. He is also survived by one grandson, Teddy Turbett, of Houston. The family would also like to acknowledge Deb Boehme, a family friend who provided much care and comfort over the years. Burial will take place in a Private Family Ceremony at the Santa Fe National Cemetery, but the family would like to invite Bill's many friends to join them in a celebratory wake to be held in his memory on Thursday, July 11, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Independent Insurance Agents of NM Building, 1511 University Blvd. NE in Albuquerque. Wohrer -- Walter Carl Wohrer, beloved husband, father, son and friend, died suddenly on June 19, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Amy McGrane; daughters, Fiona and Iris Wohrer; parents, Louis and Luise Wohrer; sister, Dietlinde Zipkin; and many loving relatives and friends. Walter loved his family and his work. He was an expert mold maker. He was born in Austria in 1957 and became a U.S. citizen in May, 2002. Walter attended St. John's College and graduated from UNM. He had been a resident of New Mexico since 1979. His sense of humor, kindness and unique sense of style will be missed by all. Memorial contributions on behalf of the family can be made to the Walter Wohrer Memorial Fund at First State Bank or mailed to 373 North Camino del Pueblo, Bernalillo, N.M. 87004.
