Reilly -- At sunrise Wednesday, February 20, 2002, Hugh Edward Reilly drove himself with his wife and family to UNM Hospital to undergo extensive surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his chest. After more than seven hours on the operating table, his heart gave out. And sure it was a grand, dear heart. Hugh's struggle with cancer began in 1979, when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease. After subjecting himself to every treatment recommended and coping with seemingly endless complications, he was cancer-free until 1989, when he received a second diagnosis, this time, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He was one of the early patients to be accepted into a cutting-edge, very intensive bone marrow transplant program at Stanford Medical Center. Although recovery took a very long and painful year, his was once again a success story. The final diagnosis, carcinoma of the left lung, came just one month ago. It was a byproduct of the radiation he received when fighting his first bout with cancer 23 years earlier. Despite these nearly insurmountable struggles, Hugh was a devoted father, a loving husband, and a most generous member of many communities: a 16-year veteran at Sandia National Laboratories working as a Mechanical Engineer, P.E. with the Solar/Thermal Group; a Roman Catholic parishioner whose activities included teaching CCD religious instruction and working with Habitat for Humanity; a volunteer at UNM Medical Center, where he shared his hope with others struggling with cancer; former president of the Notre Dame Club of New Mexico, which honored him as Man of the Year in 1988; a Sandia science advisor for Georgia O¯Keefe Elementary School (how he loved to see the curiosity sparkle in young eyes); an active source of support in his son¯s schooling and athletic involvement at Albuquerque Academy and St. Pius High School; a contributor to Casa Esperanza, a residential resource for cancer patients and their families, as well as to Dismas House, where he also served holiday meals to residents. The list could go on. Hugh's deep spiritual beliefs are reflected in the personal values statement he wrote in preparation for what proved to be his final surgery. "I believe I have been given 10 talents. At the end of my days, I will be asked to account for my use of those talents. I have many choices. I can bury my talents for safekeeping; I can usurp them; or I can use them to spread God's love. I hope to return my talents, battered and well worn from service to God." A rosary and vigil will be held at French Mortuary, 7121 Wyoming NE Friday at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Prince of Peace Catholic Community, 12500 Carmel NE. In lieu of flowers, Hugh requested memorial gifts to Casa Esperanza. He is already deeply missed by so many people.
