Jourdan -- Ellen Ann Chisholm Jourdan passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2001 in Lubbock, TX after a long illness. Ellen was born on March 28, 1924, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her parents, deceased, were Russell A. Chisholm and Frances B. Kervin, both from Bradford, Pennsylvania. Her father was in the oil business and the family moved several times before settling in Pampa, Texas. Ann was the eldest of six children. They are Jean Martin, deceased, Colleen Bush, Tom Chisholm, Sheila Hood, and Kevin Chisholm. Ann graduated from Pampa High School and matriculated to the University of New Mexico. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and graduated in 1944 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. While at the University she met her future husband, William A. "Bill" Jourdan. Part of their family lore is that Ann was a Sun Bowl Princess and Bill was the quarterback for the Lobos when the University played in the 1943 Sun Bowl Tournament. After graduation, Ann worked for Braniff Air Lines in Amarillo and Houston. Bill joined the Navy and upon his return after the war they married on September 8, 1948, in Pampa, Texas. Bill was a civil engineer with El Paso Natural Gas and they lived in Kermit and El Paso, Texas, and in Farmington, before settling in Hobbs. They have lived in Hobbs for 50 years, where they raised their seven children. The family has been active in St. Helena Catholic Church. All the children attended St. Helena Catholic School and Hobbs High School, and all graduated from the University of New Mexico. Incidentally, all six girls were members of their mother's sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma. In keeping with Ann's loyal support of the University, she was appointed by the governor to the school's Board of Regents in 1974. She served 12 years, retiring in 1986. During those years, she championed the UNM cause in southeastern New Mexico. She was a strong advocate for handicapped access on campus, the Children's Psychiatric Hospital, and the University's Presidential Scholarship program. She was characterized during her tenure as the cool-headed regent who would vote her conscience. Aside from her accomplishments as a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother, Ann was most proud of her time as a regent. Ann and Bill would have been married 53 years this September. Bill gives her full credit for the raising of a strong Christian family. Their children in birth order are as follows: Jean Ann DeLayo, her husband, Leonard, and their two children, Francesca and David, live in Albuquerque, Mary DeWalt, her husband, Bill, and their three children, Wylie, Drew, and Evan, live in Waco, Texas, Patty Heiman and her husband, David, live in Albuquerque, their two children are Shannon and Todd, both living in Dallas, Nancy Walthall and her husband, Mike, live in Sacramento, California, Jane Algermissen, her husband, Bob, and their son, Andrew, live in Montgomery, Alabama. John and his wife, Mary, live with their three children, William, Maria, and Jane, in Hobbs, the youngest, Eileen Beaumont lives with her husband, Bill, and their three children, Will, Russell, and Jourdan, in Albuquerque. Ann will be remembered as a woman of character and strong faith -- virtues that will sustain her family in her absence. Ann persevered these past few years through ill health, never complaining. She continued to the end as an active support in her children's lives and took great joy in their families and their accomplishments. She and Bill were great loves and great friends. Ann left lasting impressions on all those who knew her. She will be remembered as compassionately uncompromising, a strength that all drew from her. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a classic style. She will be dearly missed. A Rosary was held on Monday, August 13, and Mass was held on Tuesday, August 14, 2001.
