Baxter -- Marion Eugene Baxter, 65, a lifelong resident of New Mexico, passed away at a local hospital on April 2, 2001. He was born September 9, 1935 in Peralta, NM, the son of the late Eliga and Ola (Norris) Baxter. Eugene served in the US Navy from 1954 to 1964 and owned and operated his own bookkeeping service, Baxter Business Services, here in Albuquerque for many years. He was a member of Cristo del Valle Presbyterian Church. Three sons, Eugene, Terrence and Gary Baxter, preceded him in death. Eugene is survived by his loving wife, Glenda Jo (Bishop) Baxter, of Albuquerque; his mother-in-law, Oleta Bishop, of Albuquerque; niece, Deborah Kaiser, of Belen; nephew, Steve Baxter, of Albuquerque; brother, Alvin Baxter, of Belen. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 7, 2001 at Cristo del Valle Presbyterian Church, 3907 Isleta Blvd SW. Reverend Karen Cobb will officiate. Eugene will be missed by his family and friends. Strong-Thorne Mortuary is handling his arrangements.

Berg -- Harry (Dick), a resident of Albuquerque, N.M. since 1989, and former resident of Buffalo, N.Y., died on Monday, April 2, 2001 at the age of 83. He was a WWII Vet, a dedicated athlete, whose golf prowess was coveted by all who knew him and a committed jokester. He is survived by his four daughters, Barbara Velazquez, Marcia L. Swezy, Linda M. Clifford, and Christina L. Malcolm; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. His grandson, Allan J. Clifford preceded him in death. He is also survived by"Big Bertha", his constant companion on the golf links. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 1500 Chelwood Park NE on Friday, April 6, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Harry F. Breitling -- Dorthey Elaine Breitling, 79, passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2001. She lived in Albuquerque, NM for 60 years and was a retired school teacher from Bernalillo Public High School. She received her Masters in Education from Texas A & M University. Left to cherish her memories are Sam V. Martinez; and her sons, Sam Breitling, Thomas Breitling and David Breitling; daughters, Jodie Porter and Dorthey Breitling; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Orval Sonny Johnson; and sister, Christine Gallahar. Chavarria -- Eugerio B. Chavarria, 80, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died on Wednesday, April 4, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Nellie Chavarria of 57 yrs; daughter, Mary Lee Halk; sons, Jerry Chavarria, and wife, Virginia of Tularosa, NM., and Leroy Chavarria and wife, Joyce of Rio Rancho; five grandchildren, Jerry, Jr., Jennie, Adam, Dasha and Nathan; four great-grandchildren; three brothers and two sisters. Mr. Chavarria was preceded in death by his beloved son, Christopher Chavarria. Clem -- Naomi Ruth Clem, age 80, life-long resident of New Mexico, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away on April 1, 2001. She was born to Nora and Charles E. Hinkle in East Grand Plans, NM on August 25, 1920. Mrs. Clem was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband, Melvin B. Clem on March 12, 1961. Mrs. Clem was a long time member of First Assembly of God Church in Roswell and while residing in Albuquerque was a member of Highland Assembly of God Church. She is survived by three children, William N. Clem and his wife, Susan of Roswell, NM, Sandra Hardwick and her husband, Dean, and George Edwin"Eddie" Clem of Albuquerque, NM. Mrs. Clem also had four granddaughters, Kelly and Kristen of Albuquerque and Alison and her husband, David, and Leslie and her husband, J.P. of Dallas, TX as well as two great-grandchildren, Chandler and Carter of Albuquerque. Mrs. Clem's love of home and family and her strong desire to be laid to rest beside her deceased husband, in Roswell will be honored, on Saturday, April 7, 2001 at a 10:00 a.m. graveside service at Memory lawn Memorial Park. Pastor Blair Overturf of First Assembly of God Church will officiate. Mrs. Clem was a loving, caring woman who touched everyone who knew her with her kind, warm and gentle spirit. Duncan -- 1952-2001, John Ivors Duncan, 48, a life long resident of Albuquerque, passed away on April 3, 2001. He is survived by his beloved Delores; his mother, Betty Johnson; and step-father, George of Raymah, New Mexico; his son, Will Duncan and his mother, Barbara Duncan of Willmington, North Carolina; his sisters, Kathy Lucero and husband, Bobby of Corrales, New Mexico, Deborah Totten and husband, Gary of Albuquerque, Lois Holden of Albuquerque, and Theresa Graham and husband, Stephen of Sun Valley, Idaho, his brother Aaron Wade Duncan of Albuquerque, and numerous nieces and nephews. Espinoza -- Rose Mary Espinoza, 56, passed away at home April 5, 2001. She was raised in Mora, NM, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, and she will be remembered as a dedicated mother and family member. She was preceded in death by her brother, Charlie Espinoza, and is survived by her children, Marcus Espinoza, Elka Espinoza and fiance, Sam Medina, Curtis Espinoza, Mike DeHerrera and family of Cheyenne, WY; sisters, Martha Martin, Jennie Sigala, Arlene Espinoza; many nieces, nephews, other family and friends who loved and will miss her. Galvin -- May 25, 1920 - April 5, 2001 Doris was raised in Springer, NM and went to Ottawa University in Kansas where she received her BS in Biology, and later went to USC for an RN in nursing. She was the Guadalupe County nurse in Santa Rosa, NM where she met and married Dr. John Galvin. In 1968 the family moved to Albuquerque where Doris was a school nurse for APS at Eugene Field, Bellehaven, Eubank and Grant Schools until her retirement in 1985. Doris was a courageous woman who took great care of her children after John's early death in 1972. She is survived by her three children, Jolynn, John, and Jerald Galvin; her son-in-law, Steven Hooper; and her grandson, Patrick Hooper. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Ruth Martin; her brother, Ray Martin; and her husband, Dr. John Galvin. The family wishes to thank our brother, John and Susie Vacante who took great loving care of Doris. Their devotion and humor with Doris kept her with us much longer than it might have been without their help. Doris has been cremated. A Memorial Celebration for family and friends will be announced. Her cremains will be buried with her husband John at Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM with the time to be announced later. Gonzales -- Armando Margarito Gonzales passed away April 3, 2001. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He went on to retire from K.A.F.B. as Chief Fire Inspector, and after retirement, served 17 years as a School Crossing Guard at Longfellow Elementary School. Armando was preceded in death by his wife, Jenny Gonzales, and is survived by his daughters, Nellie Gurule, Margaret Ralph, Becky Gonzales and Christine (Crissy) Allison; grandchildren, Judy Lovato, Charlene Julian, Roger Gibbs, Michael Gurule, Debbie Gibbs, Perfecto (Junior) Gurule and Jaime Gibbs; great- grandchildren, Jennifer Gibbs-Lovato, Armando Lovato, Elysia Lovato, Crystal Gibbs, Titan Gibbs, Caitlin Mae Julian, and Brandy Gibbs; brother, to Becky Ortega, Leah Duran, Linda Blakely and Florence Quintana and beloved companion of Adelina (Marie) Romero. Haley -- J.C. Haley, 85, went home to be with his Lord whom he loved and served, on Sunday, April 1, 2001. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Elsie Haley; daughters, Bobbie Heberling and husband, Carl and Jean Kirkpatrick; three granddaughters, Jeri Kirkpatrick, Anita McGee, and Melinda Helfrich; four great-granddaughters; brothers, Edward Haley, Paul Haley, Robert Haley, Hulen Haley; and sisters, Helen Gholson and Lena Finley. He was preceded in death by his daughter, LaJuanda Helfrich. Mr. Haley was a longtime member of Los Altos Church of the Nazarene, having served as Trustee on the church board for 39 years. Mr. Haley retired from Moncrief-Lenoir Manufacturing Co. in 1982, after 47 years. He was a WWII veteran, having served in the Philippines. Holland -- Frances Noble"Pat" Holland, 86, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at her home in Silver City after an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 7, 2001 at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 8th and Texas with Reverend Robert L. Ihlefeld officiating. Interment in the family plot at Mesa Cemetery, Gila, NM will follow. Prior to departing for the cemetery, the family will be available in the Parish Hall to receive friends. Mrs. Holland is survived by her husband of 66 years, Thomas E. Holland of Silver City; one son, Thomas E. Holland Jr. And his wife, Michelle of Las Cruces; one sister, Roberta Graef of Kansas City, MO; six grandchildren, Reed E. Upton and his wife, Constance of Albuquerque, Robert N.M. Upton and his wife, Dina of Newtown, PA, Sarah Holland Jones and her husband, Peter of Camden, ME, Julianne Holland of Saranac Lake, NY, Emily Holland of Las Cruces, Sylvia Holland also of Las Cruces; four great-grandchildren, Adriano Agudelo of Saranac Lake, NY, Rachel Upton and Tommy Upton of Newtown, PA and Alexandra Upton of Corrales, NM. Mrs. Holland was pre-deceased by her daughter, Roberta Holland Upton and grandson, Thomas Gorman Upton. Popularly known as Pat, she was born February 25, 1915 during a brief family visit in Crossett, Arkansas. Mrs. Holland was the daughter of the late Robert P. and Winifred M. Noble, longtime Silver City residents, prominent in business, government and cultural affairs. She attended New Mexico State Teachers College, now Western New Mexico University, and the University of New Mexico, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She was honored recently by the sorority for membership spanning 65 years. Mrs. Holland dedicated her 66 years of marriage unstintingly to the welfare and well being of her family, maintaining a home wherever her husband was ordered, ranging from command of CCC camps in New Mexico to staff duty in San Francisco, the Pentagon, London, Madrid, Albuquerque and places in-between. While living in Albuquerque, she became an active equestrian taking part in horse shows and hunts in the Albuquerque area. Moving to Silver City, she and her husband owned and published the Silver City Enterprise 1975-1980. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd and a member of the 24 Club. Mrs. Holland was interested in genealogy and was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Colonists and the Colonial Dames XVII Century. Johnson -- Dr. Joseph E. Johnson, a retired internist for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Albuquerque, died March 29, 2001 at Lovelace Medical Center. He was 83. Born in St. Louis, he was a graduate of the University of Missouri and the University of Tennessee Medical School. During World War II, Dr. Johnson served as a Captain and medical officer in the Army Air Forces stationed in England and Germany. After the war he began his career with the Veterans Administration in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where he married Dorris Matthews in 1951 and began raising four children, George, David, Joe, and Mary. In 1959, the family moved to Albuquerque. He loved rose gardening, trout fishing, and spending time at the family's cabin in Seven Springs. In addition to his wife and four children, he leaves nine grandchildren. Donations in his memory can be made to the Keator Endowed Scholarship, for UNM medical students who agree to practice in medically underserved New Mexico communities. Laird -- Catherine"Kay" Laird, 86, a resident of Albuquerque since 1982, yielded to the Lord's wishes on Wednesday, April 4, 2001. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Fred G. Laird; sister, Jeanne Gross of Savanah, GA; niece, Karen Smith of Savanah, GA and nephew, David Laird of Rio Rancho, NM. Fred and Kay tremendously appreciate the many wonderful friendships they have developed over the years. Kay thoroughly enjoyed Bridge. She encouraged movements that were beneficial to youngsters. Makson -- Olga Makson, 90, a seven-year Albuquerque resident, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001. She is survived by her nephews, Warren Connon and wife, Ethel of Acton, CA and Ed Brandstoettner of Spokane, WA; niece, Aaronette Kutny of Albuquerque; grand-nieces and grand nephews, Nick Connon, Matthew Kutny, Mark Kutny, Lisa Brandstoettner, Eddie Brandstoettner, Larrisa Brandstoettner and Nicole Brandstoettner; 5 great-grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Makson, sisters, Catherine Kutny and Mary Connon, nephews, Mike Kutny and Ronald Kutny and niece, Lorraine Brandstoettner. Martinez -- Eduardo (Eddie) Martinez, 72, passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at a local hospital. He was born on October 26, 1928, in San Pedro, NM. Mr. Martinez was the son of Eduardo and Felicita Martinez. He was a graduate of Socorro High School and was a veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Martinez was the owner of Eddies Barber Shop in Albuquerque for over 40 years. He was a lifetime member of the Albuquerque Breakfast Lions Club, Albuquerque Elks Club, V.F.W., Post 41, and the D.A.V. He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Elizabeth Lopez Martinez; son, Vernon G. Martinez and wife, Judy; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Toler and husband, Steve; grandchildren, Sean, Marcus, and Marissa Martinez, Eduardo Barros and David Toler; sisters, Louisa Rivas of El Paso, TX, Rosella Crooker of Tracy, CA, Eloisa Mummey and Celia Martinez, both of Albuquerque; as well as many nieces, nephews, friends, and customers. Martinez -- Robert N."Bobby" Martinez. Born June 7, 1941 passed on April 2, 2001. A native of Taos, he moved to Albuquerque at the age of seven. A graduate of Valley High School, he served four years in the U.S.M.C. Robert chose a career in law enforcement, retiring from the New Mexico State Police in 1988. Robert is survived by wife, Hope; sons, Gary, Carl and Joaquin; brothers, Alejandro, Maximino, Leo, Ricardo, Reynaldo, Patrizio; and sister, Rebecca; grandchildren, Beth, Gabriel, Lena, Elija and Sierra. Robert was a devoted family man, wonderful husband, hard worker, but above all, a great father and friend. A Memorial Service will be held Friday at 6:00 p.m. at Christian Life Center in San Ysidro. Paden -- Harold Paden of 11320 Academy Ridge NE, Albuquerque, NM, 87111 passed away suddenly on March 29, 2001 near McKinney, TX. Harold was born July 22, 1922 at Wagner, TX and lived 30 years in Italy where he preached, taught and started a school for orphans at Frascati, Italy and more recently mission work in North New Mexico, Taos, Chama, Espanola, Penasco, etc. while living in Pojoaque, NM. Harold served as Minister of University Church of Christ and was active in development of Albuquerque Christian Children's home and started an inner city outreach program"Mission Albuquerque" that served minorities. He was active in the jail outreach program in the State Prison and with teaching to prisoners from Taos, Pojoaque, etc. He began the Red River Family Encampment at Red River, NM. Harold is a highly decorated Veteran of the 10th Mountain Division in WWII and received commendations for valor in combat (Bronze Star) with Col. Darby's regiment. He was active with the 10th Mountain reunions in United States and with Germans and Italians at the Riva Ridge Memorial in Italy. Harold attended Abilene Christian University and Pepperdine University and completed a Masters Degree in Education and Bible. He received the Outstanding Christian Service Award of Harding University and many other honors. Robinson -- Natalie Vint Buchanan Robinson passed away surrounded by her family on April 3, 2001. She was born in Omaha, NE on April 9, 1919, the daughter of Wilson W. and Sophia Addams Buchanan. She graduated from Omaha Central High School in 1937 and from Wellesley College. Wellesley, Massachusetts, in 1941 as a Phi Beta Kappa and a Wellesley College Scholar. She was a resident of Placitas, NM since 1974. She is survived by Denis, her husband of 56 years; son, Denis W. Robinson and wife, Nancy of Fullerton, CA; daughter, Alexandra Kiska and husband, Patrick of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Andrew Robinson of San Francisco, Jennifer Robinson-Sharman and husband, Jack of Albuquerque, Dustin and Robin Kiska of Albuquerque; three nephews, two in Virginia and one in Alaska; and an aunt in Milwaukee. Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday at St. Marks on the Mesa Episcopal Church on 431 Richmond Place NE. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the cancer research of your choice.

Romero -- Flavio F.P. Romero, age 90, of Albuquerque passed away April 2, 2001. Mr. Romero, son of a pioneer ranching family, was born August 1, 1910 in Albuquerque to Donaciano and Barbarita Romero. The family at that time lived in Los Lunas, NM. Mr. Romero attended secondary and high school in Los Lunas where he excelled as a member of the boxing team. After high school Flavio tried his hand at ranching, auto mechanics and meat cutting. Seeking greater challenges, he enrolled in Draughon's Business School in Albuquerque. It was here that he met Dolores S. Gallegos, his future wife-to-be. Flavio mastered the art of shorthand dictation and became a court reporter, traveling the circuit throughout New Mexico mostly with the late Judge Deacon Arledge. Following his career as court reporter, Flavio decided to enter the field of insurance and became an award-winning agent for Farmer's Insurance Group. With the help of his wife Dolores, he remained with Farmers for 36 years retiring in the 1970's. Mr. Romero was active in the Democratic Party during the 50's, 60's and 70's, becoming chairman for Bernalillo County and once even running for sheriff, losing by a hair. He was also Justice of Peace for several years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and an usher for many years at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Flavio was also a skilled outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He always kept wildlife conservation at the forefront. Mr. Romero was preceded in death by his wife Dolores in 1989 and beloved son Norman in 2000. Survivors include brothers, D.D. Romero, Jr. and Fred Romero of Albuquerque; sisters, Emilia Mirabal of Novato, CA and Ruth Czernecki of Torrance, CA; and sons, Lionel of Albuquerque, Leonard of Phoenix, AZ and Paul David of Prescott Valley, AZ. He also had many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews to carry on the legacy of his long and successful life. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 6, 2001 at Immaculate Conception Church, 619 Copper Avenue NW, with Fr. Richard McGowan, S.J. as Celebrant. Sanchez -- 1941-2001. Francisco"Frank" P. Sanchez, 59, a life long resident of Belen, passed away on Wednesday April 4, 2001. He was a life time member of the Valencia County Sheriffs Posse, and worked for the Los Lunas Post Office for 14 years. Frank made many friends and touched their hearts easily, and was always willing to help others. He was preceded in death by his father, Florenio Sanchez, his son, Pat Garcia, and his sister, Natavidad Gurule. He is survived by his wife, Valerie Garcia; his children, Victor Sanchez of Belen, Dennis Sanchez and wife, Monica of Belen, Anthony Sanchez of Los Lunas, Andy Garcia and wife, Louise of Belen, Julie Garcia of Belen, Carla Mora and husband, Tunney of Albuquerque; his mother, Esquipula Sanchez; his brothers, Meliton P. Sanchez and wife, Eva of Belen, Ray P. Sanchez and wife, Darlene of Belen; his daughter-in-law, Victoria Garcia; and numerous grandchildren; nieces; nephews;,and friends. Stevens -- Katherine K. Stevens, 92, passed away at a local hospital on March 31, 2001. She was born August 23, 1908 in Jacksonville, IL, the daughter of the late Henry and Katherine (Massey) Kamm. She taught elementary school in Santa Fe From 1946 to 1969, when she retired. Kay was a member of the Victory Love Fellowship Church and the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Fe. She is survived by her daughter, K. D. Fullerton, of Sandia Park; her grandson, Nils Kamm Fullerton; and one nephew, John Kirchhoefer of Orlando, FL. Kay was preceded in death by her son, Laurence Milligan, and her grandson, Andrew Milligan. Services are pending and will be announced at a later date. Strong-Throne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave. SE, is handling her arrangements.

Ward -- Gerald E. (Jerry) Ward, 55, a lifetime resident of Albuquerque, passed away quietly Thursday morning after a three-year battle with cancer. He is preceded in death by his mother, Celeste Ward and his brother, Larry Ward. He is survived by Sherry Ward, his wife of 34 years; daughter, Julie Ward; son, Keith Ward and wife, Marie; grandson, Noah Ward; father, Malcolm Ward and wife, Elaine; brothers, Ronald Ward and wife, Carmen all of Albuquerque, Ralph (Babe) Ward and wife, Gina of Paso Robles, CA, Dwight Ward and wife, Chris of Savannah, GA; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces. Jerry loved the outdoors and it didn't matter if he was fishing, hunting, or just cruising around the back roads looking for firewood or landscaping rocks, he was happy as long as he was outside. He had been employed at Sandia National Laboratories from 1982 until October 2000 when he retired due to his illness. Jerry was talented in the creative arts, whether completing numerous woodworking projects, painting exquisite watercolors or capturing landscapes with his camera. Jerry was a fighter and inspired everyone around him with his unending courage and strength throughout his battle with leukemia. His family complied with his final wish to donate his body to the University Medical School to further leukemia research. Jerry was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, son and friend, and he will be sorely missed by everyone he touched.
