Byard -- Evelyn Al Byard, 74, a resident of Albuquerque, died Tuesday, September 19, 2000 in Lovelace Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Dale L. Byard of Albuquerque; son, Rick Silva and wife, Pearl of Minot, ND; daughter, Beth Silva and husband, Joe of Bent, NM; step-son, Michael Byard of Daytona Beach, FL; five grandchildren, Tony, Ricky, Carlos, Kendra and Kendall; three step-grandchildren, Danny, Beth, Dale and their children. Mrs. Byard was preceded in death by one husband; two children; and one step-son. She was born November 8, 1925, daughter of Zack and Vicente Hernandez in Lamar, CO. Evelyn had dedicated and worked with her partner in life, Dale and their children. She was an artistic housewife. Services will be held Friday, 8:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Deacon Bob Lewis officiating. Candelaria -- Rebecca R. Candelaria, 37, born October 3, 1962, was called to be with Our Lord and Savior Jesus on August 6, 2000 while living in Las Vegas, Nevada. She is loved and survived by her two children, Robert, Jr. and Roger Candelaria. Also by her mother, Sylvia L. Ramirez and her father, Roger Ramirez; her sisters, Kathleen N. Ramirez, Cynthia M. Canady, Romana R. Ingle and Rachel R. Otero. She is well loved by all her family, her aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins. Rebecca received Jesus as her Lord and Savior on December 25, 1970, was Baptized by the First Spanish Baptist Church in Albuquerque, and rededicated her life to Jesus on numerous other occasions while a youth and as a young adult, and long before her death on August 6, 2000. Memorial services for Rebecca will be held on Thursday evening, September 21, 2000, 7:00 p.m., at Victory Outreach Church, 5413 Lomas NE, in Albuquerque, Phone 232-3822, with the Rev. Candelaria -- Valery Candelaria, 31, born November 14, 1968, was called to be with Our Lord God on September 15, 2000. She was well loved and survived by her spouse, Paul Walthers; son, Ruben Martinez, Jr.; also by her mother, Diana Flores and her father, Eddie Candelaria; her two brothers, Victor Candelaria and Richard Velasquez; and her grandmother, Teresa Santillanes. She was loved by her aunts, Rosella Santillanes and Carmen Madrid; sister-in-law, Isabel Candelaria; and by all her cousins, nieces, nephews, and her Godson. The family of Valery Candelaria wishes to thank all their relatives and friends who were in attendance of the memorial services for Valery. Casados -- Anthony Gilbert Casados, age 25, beloved son, brother, father, grandson, and uncle, was called home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, September 19, 2000. Anthony was born in West Covina, CA on October 30, 1974; and was a resident of Albuquerque. He leaves behind his loving parents, Alfred and Catherine Casados; two sisters, Veronica Chavez and husband, Nick, Reyna Casados; his precious children, Anthony Valentino and Arianna Casados, all of Albuquerque. Also surviving are his maternal-grandparents, Rey and Dorothy Gonzales of California; nieces, Alexandria Martinez, Abriana Chavez; step-father, Ben Casados; and a host of friends. Anthony will be greatly missed by his loving family, and those who knew and loved him. Visitations will be Friday, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., in the Chapel of Garcia Mortuary, located on 8th and Iron. A Rosary will be recited Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. also in the chapel. Contreras -- Primo A Teacher's Farewell Primo Contreras, eldest of ten children, born December 7, 1931 in Fabens, Texas to Primo Sr. and Maria Rufugio"Cuquita" Contreras. Contreras attended St. Charles College, Jesuit Seminary in Grand Coteau, LA in 1950 and ordained a Roman Catholic Priest in 1963. He taught at Jesuit High Schools in Tampa, Florida and El Paso, Texas. In 1970, Contreras was allowed to dispense his priestly vows, and began a 27-year career as a Theology teacher at St. Pius X High School in Albuquerque. He married Priscilla Boone in July, 1971, becoming the father of six children ranging in age from 2 1/2 to 11 years old. He was awarded the New Mexico Catholic Schools' Distinguished Teacher Award in 1991. In 1995, he and his wife, Priscilla went to Russia with the Ecumencial Co-Mission to teach Christian Morality in Rostov, Puskin and St. Petersburg. Primo returned to St. Pius for a final year, leaving in 1997. He then began a new mission of service, teaching Native American children in New Mexico Pueblos. He taught at San Diego Mission School at Jemez Pueblo for two years and at St. Anthony in Zuni, NM this past year. Primo is survived by his wife, Priscilla; their six children, William Boone and wife, Lori of Seattle, WA, Priscilla and husband, Sinclair Mangram of Pueblo, CO, Martin Boone and fiancee, Rachel Czajka of Morgantown, WV, John Boone and wife, Shanna of Baltimore, MD, Elena Boone and partner, Maxine Harris of Simi Valley, CA, Margaret Mary Boone and fiance, Charles Pixley of Phoenix, AZ, and Bernard Clifford, loved as a son, and wife, Rosella of Albuquerque. Primo is also survived by nine grandchildren, Justin and Tarin Boone (Bill), Jon Boone and Clearthur Mangram (Priscilla), Ryan, Evan and Cory Boone (John), Christopher and Patrick Clifford (Bernie). Other survivors include his mother, Maria Rufugio Contreras; siblings, Robert Contreras and wife, Yolanda, Martha Prieto, Billie Dunn and husband, John, Sandra Varela and husband, Tom, Rose Carmona and husband, Beto, Judy Rey, Miguel Contreras and wife, Judith, Tommy Contreras, Terry Ramos; and many beloved nephews and nieces, all of El Paso, Texas. His legacy is carried within his survivors and extends far and wide into the thousands of souls that he touched on his path to salvation. The viewing will commence at 6:00 p.m. with a prayer service following at 7:30 p.m. at St. Pius X High School on Thursday, September 21, in the school gymnasium on Coors and St. Joseph's Dr. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church at 619 Copper Ave. NW, Albuquerque. Freel -- Frank J. Freel, 82, a resident of Rio Rancho for the past six and a half years, passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 2000. Frank was born on January 17, 1918 in Brooklyn, New York. He had been a Bank Vice President before retiring after 39 years in the Banking business. Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred in 1995; daughter, Deborah Freel; step-son, Walter O'Hearn; and one grandson, Robert Famiglietta. He is survived by three children, Mildred Mackin and husband, Fran of Washingtonville, NY, Fran Famiglietta and husband, Mike of Rio Rancho, and Frank Freel of Tampa, FL; one brother, William Freel of Brooklyn, NY; ten grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. The visitation for Frank will be on Thursday, September 21, 2000, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with the Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd., at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho. Garcia -- Roger F. Garcia, 58, passed away following a long illness Sunday, September 17, 2000, while surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Garcia was born in Taos, NM on December 10, 1941; he was a parishioner of St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church. He is survived by his loving parents, Cleofas and Frank Garcia of Albuquerque; his three daughters, Claudine Garcia and fiance, William Wilkins of El Paso, TX, Anna Regina Kyzer and husband, John and Tina Marie Tait of Santa Fe; two granddaughters, Christina and Jessica Kyzer, both of Tucson, AZ. Also surviving are two sisters, Frances Rodarte and husband, Gilbert of Santa Fe, Dorothy Rodarte and husband, Don of Albuquerque; one brother, Tony Garcia and wife, Trudy of Albuquerque; and several nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and those who knew and loved him. A Rosary will be recited this evening, 7:00 p.m., at St. Therese Church. Hulliger -- Cheryl A. Gatewood-Hulliger, 43, a resident of Albuquerque for 11 years, died Tuesday, September 19, 2000. She is survived by her parents, Clarence N. and Esther E. Gatewood; sons, Christoher S. Hulliger and Marcus A. Hulliger, all of Albuquerque; brothers, Donald N. Gatewood and wife, Evelyn of Virginia Beach, VA and David N. Gatewood and wife, Lynn of Albuquerque; and many other relatives and friends. Cheryl was a 1976 Menaul High School graduate. She was a teacher's assistant with APS, most recently working at Cleveland Middle School Special Ed and previously working at Valley High School. Cheryl was an active member of Second Presbyterian Church where she was also a member of the Adela Candelaria Circle. Kaplan -- Bernard Kaplan, 77, died peacefully in his home on September 17, 2000. A native New Yorker, Bernard worked in Public Relations and Real Estate Management until he retired and moved to Albuquerque in 1989. A devoted and adored husband, father, grandfather and brother, Bernard is survived by his wife, Judith; his children, Lauren, Hillard and Donald, along with their spouses, John, Kate and Heidi; grandchildren, Rebeccah, Jacob, Jillian and Sophie; and sister, Bebe Jaffee. He will be remembered by all who knew him as an intelligent, sensitive, informed and generous person. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 21 at Congregation Albert, 3800 Lousiana Blvd. NE. Montoya -- Daniel C. Montoya, 75, a resident of Belen since 1950, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, September 19, 2000. He was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church and the VFW. Daniel was a Gunner on a Bomber and Staff Sgt. in WWII, earning the Air Medal with four clusters, and ETO with two battle stars. After the war, he enrolled at New Mexico Western College where he received his Bachelors Degree in Education. His father, Alejandro, was very proud of him, as he was the first in his family to graduate from college. He achieved his Masters Degree in 1964 also from Western, NM. Later, he began his new career at the Belen High School. Daniel's reasoning for entering the education field was because of his love for his family, whom always came first. He said his career in teaching was worth every minute, especially when one of his students would say Daniel made a difference in his life. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and sportsman, enjoying all sports games at the Belen High School. He was also a builder by trade and architectural designer who designed the floor plans at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church and over 300 homes in Belen. Daniel and his son, Randy, also built the altar at the Catholic Church in Jarales. He was well known for his smiling face which is brighter today with a heavenly smile. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alejandro E. and Inez C. Montoya; and his sister, Belen M. Bencomo. Daniel is survived by his wife of 51 years, Emma; one daughter, Eilene; two sons, Daniel Anthony and Randy Montoya; one granddaughter, whom was the apple of his eye, Jessica Montoya; three brothers, Alejandro C., Ben C. Montoya and his wife, Rita, and Richard C. and his wife, Evon; two sisters, Bertha M. and her husband, Alfred Madrid from Hacienda Heights, CA and Rufina Avena from San Lorenzo, NM; and one brother-in-law, Domingo Bencomo. Daniel is also survived by his many loving nieces and nephews. A Rosary will be held on Wednesday, September 20, 2000, 5:30 p.m., at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, September 22, 2000 at the San Lorenzo Catholic Church in San Lorenzo, NM at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Ft. Bayard National Cemetery in Ft. Padilla -- Dorothy S. Padilla, 72, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away quietly Monday, September 18, 2000 into the hands of our Lord at home surrounded by the ones she loved. She is survived by her sons, Vic Padilla, Sr. and wife, Mary Alice, Alex E. Padilla, Jr.; daughter, Debra L. Medina and husband, Arturo; grandchildren, Cecilia Padilla and fiance, Pat Quillen, Vic Padilla, Jr. and wife, Denise, Yvonne Medina and fiance, Chris Jones, Dottie Narvaiz and husband, Robert, Dustin Padilla, Natasha Hagan and husband, John and Tracie Lynn Padilla; great-grandchildren, Christopher Jones, Autumn Weaver, Mykayla Jones, Robert Paul Narvaiz and Justis Quillen; brother, Ben Sanches and wife, Rose; sisters, Dolores Castillo and husband, Gilbert, Rafella Chacon and husband, Robert; and many loving family members. Quintana -- Mr. Florencio Quintana, 98, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on September 20, 2000. Mr. Quintana was the beloved father to Florencio Quintana and wife, Helen of Pueblo, CO, Abran Quintana and wife, Margie of El Cerrito, Leandro Quintana and wife, Elsie of El Cerrito, Arturo Quintana, Gene Quintana and wife, Ramona, Vidal Quintana of Sitka, Alaska, Rumaldo Quintana and wife, Mary, George Quintana and Margaret, Mary Quintana and Cruz Orona of El Cerrito, Erma Chacon of Denver, CO and Lydia Saiz and husband, Ramon; 43 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Agneda G. Quintana, 1996. Mr. Quintana was a member of the Catholic Church. Regan -- Owen C. Regan, 83, died September 1, 2000 at Albuquerque Manor in Albuquerque. Mr. Regan was born in Newark, NJ and was employed in the Department of Central Purchases, City of Newark, prior to moving to Albuquerque in 1952. He served in the US Navy Seabees during World War II, and was a member of the DAV Post in East Orange, NJ, and the American Legion Post in Albuquerque. Mr. Regan was preceded in death by his wife, Lea Brewer Regan (Oct. 20, 1999). He is survived by his sister, Kathleen Regan Gelpke and a niece, Maureen P. Gelpke, both of Morris Plains, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Friday, September 22, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Ghost Church, followed by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Smith -- Carl F. Smith, 80, a native of Albuquerque, died Tuesday, September 19, 2000 at UNM Medical Center. He is survived by his daughters, Sandra Ann Smith and Connie Vaughan; brother, Jack R. Smith; sisters, Edith Lanning and Leita Centers; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Navy in WWII and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. After his return to Albuquerque, he completed his education and worked for the Department of Defense for many years. Smith -- Jeanne Popejoy Smith, a lifetime resident of Albuquerque, died September 16, 2000, at the age of 72. She is survived by sons, David W. Smith, wife, Susan, and children, Loring and Hilary; James T. Smith, wife, Paula, and children, Jessica, Nicholas, and Cheyenne; Michael P. Smith, wife, Janet, and children, Leah and Shane; and daughters, Barbara Jean Smith; Claire Weaver, and children, Michael and Wendy. She is also survived by her brother, Thomas L. Popejoy, Jr., wife, Suzanne, and children, T.L. and Stuart. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas L. Popejoy, Sr. in 1975, and Bess Kimball Popejoy in 1996. Jeanne was an incredible women, and she lived a fulfilling life. She raised her children alone following the death of her husband Loring, in 1964. After that, she worked as a school teacher in California, and at the Job Corps in Albuquerque. She owned and operated the Lullaby Guild in the late 70's, and Alpha Nurses of NM in the early 80's. She was avid in her belief in womens' rights, and was dedicated to the organization, Business Professional Women. She served as the State president from 1989 to 1990. Jeanne was a sweet, kind, loving person who was generous to a fault. She exhibited deep compassion to those in need who came into her life, giving anything necessary to help the less fortunate. She was a tireless reader and frequent visitor to the library, bringing home bags of books every week. With her unending cheerful disposition, she was a pillar of support for her family and her many dear friends. Like her father before her, Jeanne succumbed to Alzheimer's Disease. Varoz -- Edward Varoz was born in El Rito, New Mexico on May 16, 1920 and passed away on Friday, September 15, 2000. Edward served in the Army of the United States as a cannoneer crewman in the Far West Pacific and in Iwojima during World War II. He received several Declarations for Good Conduct, and received a Victory Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal. He attended one year of college at New Mexico Highland University in Las Vegas, New Mexico. He is survived by one daughter, Christina Varoz from Denver, CO; one brother, Ted Varoz, Sr. and sister-in-law, Olga Varoz; a sister, Alice Garcia; 21 nieces and nephews; and four grandnieces and nephews. Rosary will be held Thursday, September 21, 7:00 p.m., at Salazar & Sons Mortuary, 400 Third St. SW. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 22, 9:00 a.m., at St. Therese Little Flower Church, 300 Mildred NW. Pallbearers are Dr. Ted Varoz, Jr., Timothy Varoz, Thomas Varoz, Francisco Garcia, Richard Flores, Phil Maestas, and Fredrick Garcia. Honorary pallbearers are Ventura Romero, Zack Martin, Ernie Martin, and Ray Pino.

Winter -- Baby Kelly Daniel Winter, two months old, son of Ryan and Dannilynn Winter, passed away on September 18, 2000, is now one of God's little angels in heaven. Kelly is also survived by his two sisters, Justine Sanchez and Stacey Winter; grandparents, Danny and Michiko Gomez and Kelly and Jeannette Winter and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Mass of the Angels will be celebrated Friday morning, 9:00 a.m., at San Martin Catholic Church, 8301 Camino San Martin SW. Father Dan Farris, Celebrant. Visitation will be at the church after 8:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
