Dietz -- The family of Ann E. Dietz mourn her quiet passing at her home on Edith Blvd. NE, Tuesday afternoon, January 25, 2000. She was born Ann Augusta Espe in 1916 in Salt Lake City, Utah, but spent all her formative years in Santa Fe. She was the daughter of prominent Santa Fe businessman Theodore N. Espe and devoted mother, Alice Gallinger Williams, who was killed in an automobile accident when Ann was 12 years old. Ann's great grandfather was Jacob H. Gallinger, the famous and popular US Senator from New Hampshire at the end of the 19th century. Ann graduated from Santa Fe High School, Class of 1932, as Valedictorian. Four years later she graduated from UNM as Valedictorian. In 1938, she married Robert Edwin Dietz III of Albuquerque, and the two raised their family of four children on the farm known in the early days as Nassau Farm on north Rio Grande Blvd., and known today as Dietz Farm. The two celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August, 1988. She was a deeply religious person and spent her lifetime pursuing broad church objectives. She started the first choir that eventually sang in a new church being founded in the 1950's and is known today as St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church on Montano Rd. NW. During those years she served as organist for the church. It was her generosity that funded nine of the ten stained glass windows by UNM professor John Tatschl that have always so beautifully graced the interior of the church. She gave the pipe organ in memory of her father. During the 1960's she established an ecumenical retreat that served a diverse church community. She was an early advocate of photography as art. From 1964-1988 she owned and operated Quivira Books & Photography Gallery in various locations, from Corrales, to Old Town, to the university district, to Montgomery Plaza, to the Sheraton Plaza Hotel near Old Town. She was a great patron of education, contributing unflinchingly to a fledgling boys school with origins in the parish hall of St. Michael and All Angels Church and today grown into one of the southwest's finest secondary school systems, Albuquerque Academy. The halls of the Music Bldg. at the Academy serve as home to an extraordinary exhibit of photogravures by world famous Alfred Stieglitz, a collection donated by Ann in memory of her husband, who predeceased her in 1991. In the early 80's she resurrected a longtime interest in and love of antiques, especially glass and porcelain, about which she had expert knowledge. She enjoyed doing mending and repairs on the antique glass and porcelain. Ann is survived by her four children, Gerry Saunders, Robert E. IV, and Ethelinda, all of Albuquerque, and Theodore of Seattle, WA; grandchildren, Jessica Wells of Lebanon, OR, Holly Dietz Algermissen of Albuquerque, Zachariah E. of Ames, IA, and Maya H. of Seattle; and great-grandchildren, Jonah and Jackson Wells, and Anna Louise, Ella Marie and John Algermissen.
