Bess -- Earnest M. Bess died unexpectedly Saturday, June 26, 1999. Mr. Bess was born in Mountain Grove, Missouri, October 17, 1919, the son of Mary Luetta and Q.C. Bess. Bess is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara; four children, The Rev. Sandra S. Bess of Rio Rancho, C.C. Bess and wife, Maryann of Las Cruces, Jim Bess and wife, Melody Zownir of Albuquerque and Bob Bess and wife, Phyllis of Fort Worth, TX. Mr. Bess' grandchildren are Joanne Truelove and husband, Jeff, Brad Bess and wife, Connie, Hillery Bess, Christopher Bess, Katy Bess, Jesse Zownir-Bess and Tyler Zownir-Bess; plus six great-grandchildren. Bess and his parents moved to New Mexico in 1921, where he was educated in the Albuquerque Public School system, graduating from Albuquerque High School in 1936. He then attended UNM and started his first business, Bess Tire Company, which at that time was located at 4th and Gold. He served in the United States Navy during WWII and was stationed in San Diego, CA, until he was honorably discharged in 1946. Bess and his family returned to Albuquerque, where he worked with his father in the furniture business. Later he became a Real Estate Broker and worked in the real estate business until the time of his death. Bess was active in the Optimist Club, the Farm Bureau and P.T.A.'s while his children in school. He served on the Bernalillo County Zoning Commission for several years. Bess was a faithful churchman all of his life, serving when asked. A Requiem Memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 1, 1999 at 9:30 a.m. in St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. The Very Rev. John B. Haverland, The Rev. Sandra S. Bess, and The Rev. Samuel L. Hall will officiate at the service. Bourque -- Andree C. Bourque, 61, a resident of Rio Rancho for the past ten years, passed away on Sunday, June 27, 1999. Andree was born February 1, 1938, the daughter of Robert and Cecile Benoit Bourque in Magog, Quebec, Canada. Andree is survived by her parents, Robert and Cecile of Rio Rancho; one sister, Colette Smith and husband, Charles of Rio Rancho; one nephew, Michael Smith and wife, Monica of Rio Rancho; grandnephew, Michael, and grandniece, Michelle; many relatives in Canada and Connecticut. The visitation will be held on Thursday, July 1, 1999, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with the Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd., at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho. The Mass of Resurrection will be held on Friday, July 2, 1999, 10:30 a.m., at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. Douglas Raun as the Celebrant. Carnes -- Col. Sam A. Carnes, U.S.A.F. (Ret.), 87, a resident of Albuquerque since 1961, died Sunday, June 27, 1999. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Charlotte B. Carnes of Albuquerque; daughter, Cynthia Carnes of Corrales; son, Sam A. Carnes Jr. and wife, Nancy of Knoxville, TN; grandson, James H. Wall Jr. and wife, Chandra of Rio Rancho; granddaughters, Suzanne O'Neill and husband, Bill of Albuquerque, Charlotte Smith and husband, Doug of Overland Park, KS, and Cindy M. Carnes of Knoxville, TN; great-grandson, Christopher Wall; and great-granddaughter, Amanda Wall, both of Rio Rancho. Col. Carnes was preceded in death by his brothers, John P. Carnes and James J. Carnes III. He was a veteran of WWII, having served for 27 years in the U.S. Air Force an an administrative officer in the Pacific and C.B.I. Theaters, retiring in 1961. After his retirement, he was associated with the American Automobile Association. Col. Carnes was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. Castle -- Alba Lynn Castle, a former resident of Gallup, died in Albuquerque on Monday, June 28, 1999. She was born in Gallup on May 13, 1963 and she attended the McKinley County Public School System and graduated from Gallup High School in 1981. She attended the College of Santa Fe. She is survived by her daughter, Cheney Perry-Hill; parents, Albert Jr. and Sarah Castle, all of Albuquerque; brothers, Marlon C. Castle of Santa Fe and Gerald A. Castle and wife, Bonnie of Norfolk, VA; maternal grandmother, Flora B. Nix of Cathedral City, CA; paternal grandparents, Albert and Carrie Castle of Gallup; and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins. Prior to her illness, she was employed by Sprint PCS as a staff trainer, a caretaker for Marie Amadea Shelter, and worked for Checker Shuttle Services as a dispatcher. Duran -- Aaron LeRoy Duran, 62, son of Aaron E. and Dolores M. Duran, left us to be with our Lord on Thursday, June 24, 1999 in Denver, Colorado after a long illness. He was born at Cuba, NM in 1937. LeRoy was a graduate of Albuquerque High School and attended the University of New Mexico, where he was a member of the ROTC and later served in the US Army. For several years, he was Vice President of ICX and then went into business of his own as part owner of L&M Trucking Co. in Denver. During his life, he was an avid fisherman and hunter, as well as many outdoor activities, which he shared with his father, Aaron. Survivors include his father, Aaron, his mother, Dolores; his brother, James Randolph and wife, Jere Duran; ex-wife, Mary Lou; Marlys Duran, the mother of his children; two sons, Dean and his wife, Melody, Darin and fiance, Leslie; daughter, Denise and husband, Gary; his grandchildren, Corey, Casey and Cody Barby, Laurie and Mindy Moore; his uncles, Leo Montoya and beloved friend, Marian, Archie and wife, Charlene; and a special aunt, Olivia Smith; and many cousin, nephews and nieces. Services will be held Thursday in Denver.

Garcia -- William"Billy" Garcia, 78, passed away June 27, 1999. He was a lifelong resident of Old Town and a member of San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cecelia Garcia Velarde. Billy is survived by his wife of 58 years, Emma Garcia; six daughters, Barbara Haggard of Lyons, KS, Viola Maez of Lynwood, WA, Catherine Magruder of Richmond, MO, Lorraine Velarde of Albuquerque, Betty Gonzales of Corpus Christi, TX, and Valerie Groll of San Antonio, TX; ten grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters; one brother; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends who loved and will miss him. Gomez -- Mrs. Priscilla Gomez died Tuesday in Albuquerque at the age of 77. Mrs. Gomez was born in Las Nutrias. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother who devoted her life to her family. She was always smiling and caring about all of her family. She was a loving mother to her three sons, Raymond Gomez and wife, Cecilia, Ross Gomez, and Emilio Gomez. Mrs. Gomez is also survived by her brother, Eustacio Baca; sister, Rose Gomez and husband, Ernest; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services for Mrs. Gomez will be held on Friday at the St. Therese Catholic Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Kyriss -- Commander Stephen Earl Kyriss, U.S. Navy Retired, 53, a resident of El Paso, TX, passed away in Albuquerque, Friday, June 25, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Diane Kyriss; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Irvin and Ethel Moulton; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ken and Abby Moulton, Larry and Kay Griffin, and Roger and Kathy Moulton; nephews and nieces; and cousin, Ron Richardson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Dorothy Kyriss. Stephen graduated from Manzano High School in 1964 and the University of New Mexico in 1968. He served in the U.S. Navy for 25 years. During that time, he obtained an MBA from George Washington University, co-authored the Naval textbook,"Seamanship and Navigation" and served in the Vietnam War. At the time of his death, Stephen was a Naval Science Instructor of the NJROTC at Americas High School in El Paso, TX. Marquez -- Jose Marquez, 60, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away early Monday at his home. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of the family home; three sons, Luis Marquez and wife, Anna, Enrique Marquez and wife, Blanca, Miguel Marquez and wife, Juana, all of Albuquerque; one daughter, Teresa Marquez of Chihuahua, Mexico; one step-son, Steve Garcia and wife, Melissa of Albuquerque; two step-daughters, Angelica Giron and husband, Scott of Albuquerque and Lisa Ewing of Albuquerque; and ten grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Celestino Marquez of Albuquerque, Encarnacion Marquez of Chihuahua, Mexico; three sisters, Eustacia Agirre of Oklahoma, Juana Urbina of Chihuahua, Mexico, and Brigida Lopez of Chihuahua, Mexico; and two of his best friends, Gilbert Blea and Richard Luna; and many nieces and nephews. Meyer -- Charlotte Herman Meyer. Mrs. Ben F. Meyer passed away Friday morning, June 25th. She was preceded by her husband, Ben F. Meyer; daughter, Charlene Smith Shrum; brother, Carl Herman; and sister, Anna McCollough. She is survived by her son, Thomas A. Meyer of New Orleans, Jane Zerbey of Messilla; and sister, Sister Carlanne; a sister of Lorreto, residing at the mother house in Nerinx Kentucky; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Born July 27th, 1906 in Las Vegas, New Mexico, she is a member of one of northern New Mexico's oldest families, Charlotte was the daughter of Marie Antoinette and George J. Herman and granddaughter of Charles Blanchard and Margaret Des Marais Blanchard. She was also the great-granddaughter of Michael Des Marais who came from the Providence of Quebec to New Mexico in the 1820's and became one of the founders of the city of Las Vegas in 1835, and Dona Deluvina Vigil y Montes de Des Marais, whose home still stands on the plaza of West Las Vegas where as a matriarch of a large family of descendants, Dona Deluvina was almost a legendary figure in the annals of San Miguel County. On October 7, 1925, Charlotte married Mr. Ben F. Meyer of Estancia Valley, also from a pioneer family of New Mexico. Charlotte and Ben lived in Las Vegas, Taos, and Santa Fe before settling in Albuquerque where they raised there three children. A Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, June 30, 1999 at 7:30 p.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 5415 Fortuna Rd. NW. Minero -- Miguel (Mike) Minero, 68, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Saturday, June 26, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Cherilynn (Cheryl) Minero of the family home; daughter, Michelle J. Purchase -- William C."Bill" Purchase, 70, passed away on Monday, June 28, 1999 at his home in Albuquerque. He is survived by his wife, Addie; daughters, Barbara, Lori, Sharon and husband, Dwayne, Donna and husband, Patrick; three adoring grandchildren, Nicklaus, Leslie and Haley; and sisters, Betty and Carla and husband, Keith. Mr. Purchase had more friends than you could count. He touched everyone he met with his warm, genuine laugh and sense of humor. He retired from D.O.E. with twenty plus years of service as a transportation manager. Mr. Purchase enjoyed spending times at his cabin in Chama with his loving wife, family and grandchildren, cheering on his grandson, Nick at his baseball games, adoring his two granddaughters, and spending time with his many friends at lunch or on the golf course. Mr. Purchase especially enjoyed the rodeo. He was an active member of Queen of Heaven Parish. His life was a true example of is faith. Mr. Purchase was loved by everyone and will be deeply missed. Mrs. Ruybal was the beloved wife of five years to Ventura Ruybal. She is also survived by her mother and step-father, Marlene and John Brockmann; her father and step-mother, David Leyva Jr. and wife, Mary; four brothers, Dominique Leyva and wife, Luisa Pueyo, Jose Leyva and girlfriend, Jamie Munsey, Christopher Moya and Andrez Leyva; grandparents, Efren and Cora Rodriguez and David and Esperanza Leyva; in-laws, Ventura Ruybal Sr. and wife, Cathy; sisters-in-law, Angel Ruybal and Renee Ruybal; one niece, Alicia Sofia Leyva; one nephew, Joaquin Leyva; and many other aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Spear -- Betty Fleming Spear, 78, a resident of Albuquerque since 1927, went home to be with our Lord, Jesus Christ, Tuesday, June 29, 1999. She is survived by her husband, Howard H. Steele -- Lonnie Ann Steele, 48, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away June 25, 1999 at 9:40 a.m. Lonnie was preceded in death by her parents, George Vesti and Patricia Stelle and is survived by her immediate family, Lynn Allensworth, Stacey Tuttle, Kerri and Trace Peck and Brooke Allensworth; her sister, Carol Ussery and nephews, Kevin Kees and Ryan Ussery; five aunts, Peggy Sena, Mary Sandoval, Maryann Sanchez, Sister Raphael Garcia, Rosalie Aragon; and also by many extended family members and friends who were touched and changed through her love, caring and teaching. Lonnie will be missed greatly by the students and faculty at Manzano High School where she was a cherished teacher and coach. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Lonnie's life and contribution to our community on Wednesday, June 30, 1999, 7:00 p.m., at Manzano High School's Performing Arts Center, (12200 Lomas Blvd. NE). It will be an informal occasion and anyone who wishes will be able to share how Lonnie touched their lives. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Lonnie Steele Memorial Scholarship Fund, Attn: Nancy Dinges, Manzano High School, 12200 Lomas Blvd. NE. Sumner -- Larry W. Sumner, age 49, passed away on June 29, 1999. He was born to Billy and Carrie Sumner on November 22, 1949 in Oak Hill, WV. He is survived by his wife, Nina; daughters, Christie Waldschmidt and husband, Aaron of Albuquerque and Karen Sumner of Rio Rancho; parents, Billy and Carrie Sumner of Grants; sisters, Sandra Oneal and Carol Ballew of Grants and Mary Jaramillo of Carlsbad, NM; brothers, James Sumner of Odessa, TX, John Sumner of Aurora, CO and Preston Sumner of Carlsbad, NM. Mr. Sumner lived in the area for 12 years. He was employed by the US Postal Service. He served his country in the US Army. A memorial service for Mr. Sumner will be held at the Chapel of Rio Rancho Funeral Home on Friday, July 2 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Darla Fields officiating. Williams -- Danny Bob Williams, 67, a resident of Bernalillo, passed away June 25, 1999. He is survived by his loving wife, Zaida; a son, Lloyd Daniel (Danny) and wife, Kelly of Bernalillo; and a daughter, Jeanna Griffin and husband, Tony of Bernalillo; four grandchildren, Tammy Tolleson and husband, Adam, Travis, Shannon and Aaron; and great-grandson, Johnny; two sisters, Jenny Hanby of Arizona and Diana Davis and husband, M.C. of Bloomfield, NM; and his dear brother and sisters-in-law; many nieces and nephews; and his dear friend and mother-in-law, Mildred Lermuseaux. He was employed by the U.S. Postash mines for 16 years before he came to Bernalillo, where he lived until his death. He was a building trades instructor at Bernalillo High School for 25 years before he retired, after having a heart attack. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and who enjoyed his humor and witnessed the love and compassion he showed his family and friends and students. Memorial services will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 312 Unser Blvd., in Rio Rancho, on June 30, 1999 at 7:30 p.m.
