Callahan -- Fred R. Callahan, 73, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, lost his short battle with cancer at home Saturday morning, October 3, 1998. He is survived by his loving wife, Priscilla of the family home and porch; eldest son, Mike and his wife, Romelia, sons, Craig and his wife, Cathy, Marvin and wife, Janelle, Kevin and wife, Joann; and only daughter Janell and her husband, Isaac. He is also survived by his nine precious grandchildren, Tyra, Shelice, Alena, Taneke, Ambyre, Jai-kob, Jádn and Baby Callahan. Fred also is survived by his eldest sister Regina Romero and husband, Paul, Lillian Roybal, Lawrence Callahan and wife, Bernadette, Lola Perkins, Richard Callahan, Mabel Padilla and husband Mike; and many nieces and nephews. Fred was a Veteran of WWII, having landed on the beaches at Normandy on D-Day and received a Purple Heart during the Battle of the Black Forest in 1942. He met Priscilla in Albuquerque in 1950 and married her in 1951. They enjoyed 48 years of wedded bliss, raising their family at 2208 Milton Ct. NW. Fred worked for 29 years at Sandia Labs in the Electronics Division before retiring in 1979. He later worked for Hilton Hotels, the South Seventh Senior Citizens Center and for the last ten years for Wackenhut at the New Mexico Federal Credit Union. Fred loved his home. He was an avid gardener and raised excellent chili every summer. He and his family spend many long, lazy hours on the front porch just talking and relaxing. His favorite outdoor activity was fishing with his sons and close friends. He fished all over Northern New Mexico all of his life. No trout of legal size was safe from his Zebco reel, corn, and his Old-timer pocket knife. He loved his old 1959 Chevrolet Apache truck,"the Sanford" and enjoyed taking his Sunday cruise to make the rounds between church, Old Town and old friends. He was extremely proud of all of his sons and his daughter in their abilities to work in meaningful careers and raise good families. But most of all, and the only thing that mattered, was the tremendous love he had for his wife Priscilla. He was a good man who touched all whom he met. We all loved him dearly. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 5, 1998 at St. Therese Catholic Church. Immediately following the Rosary the family will gather at the Knights of Columbus, 609 14th St. NW, where friends are welcome to come and share refreshments. Cremation will take place and the family will have a private scattering. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the family. Arrangements by Direct Services, 4501 4th St. NW.
