Connell -- Eugene"Gene" Stratton Taft Connell, 82, a resident of Albuquerque since 1945, died peacefully in the presence of his wife and eight children, Wednesday, March 4, 1998. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Billie Connell of the family home; sons, Charles Connell and wife, Joann of Oregon, and Steve McClure and wife, Karen of Springer, NM; daughters, Julia Horton of Albuquerque, Eileen Weber and husband, Jeff of California, Elizabeth D. Connell, and Linda Kaiser and husband, Chuck of Oregon, Mary Lynn Perkins and husband, Bob of Texas, and Amy Monsees and husband, A.J. of Tennessee; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister, Pauline Garza and husband, Zaragoza of Texas; former wife, Elizabeth H. Connell of California; and mother-in-law, Verlyne Younger of Texas. Mr. Connell was born in New York City, NY. He attended Valley Forge Military Academy and graduated from Bates College, where he excelled in Track and Field. Gene was a veteran of WWII and Korea, having served in the US Army. He was the owner of Commercial Office Supply for 15 years. Gene was an avid UNM Lobo fan. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Services will be held Saturday, 9:30 a.m., at Faith Lutheran Church, 10,000 Spain NE, with Pastor Russell Sorensen officiating. Private interment will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM. Friends may visit French Mortuary, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE, Friday, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Garcia -- Mrs. Placida L. Garcia, age 95, died Wednesday in Albuquerque. Mrs. Garcia was a member of the San Jose De Los Duranes Catholic Church. She is survived by her four children, Jose Antonio Garcia and wife, Margaret, Frances Candelaria and husband, Perfecto, Betty Gallegos and husband, Mike; and a special daughter, Mary Martinez; one sister, Eloisa Aregood; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Garcia will be held on Friday at the San Jose De Los Duranes Catholic Church, where the mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael Gallegos, Francella Borrego, John Candelaria, Catherine Candelaria, Donald Garcia, and Jose Garcia Jr. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Sandia Hospice, 5740 Osuan NE. Garrett -- Wylie Ewing, 58, a resident of Albuquerque since 1987, died Monday, March 2, 1998 at Presbyterian Hospital. Wylie was born July 20, 1939 to Victor and Opal Garrett in Belton, Texas. Following high school, he served in the United States Marine Corps. Later, he attended the University of Houston. At the time of his death, Wylie was Executive Director of The Grand Court, at the retirement community's Albuquerque location. Wylie is survived by his wife of 24 years, Noemi, and their children, Kevin and Ashlee Garrett; his former wife, Bevelyn Garrett, and their children, Dena Engel and husband Alan, Brett Garrett and wife Kim, and Bart Garrett. Wylie is also survived by brothers, Tandy Garrett and wife Pat, Robert Garrett and wife Retta; sister, Vicky Thompson Bair and husband Ken; grandchildren, John, Kelsee and Kaylee; and other family members. Wylie was eternally a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, great-uncle and friend. His presence among us will be dearly missed. Wylie's life will be celebrated in a Memorial Service to be held at Heights Christian Church, where he was a member, on Saturday, March 7, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. Those wishing to make contributions in Wylie's memory may do so to the American Heart Association, PO Box 90790, Albuquerque, NM 87199. Jones -- Gladys Shearer Jones, 89, a resident of La Vida Llena Retirement Center since 1983, died Sunday, February 8, 1998, after a brief illness. She was born and reared in Kentucky by a Baptist minister and his wife, Walker and Eva Shearer. Gladys was the second oldest of six children, and she graduated from Georgetown College in Kentucky in 1930. She taught school in Kentucky until she married Frank M. Jones in 1937 and moved to Canton, OH. Gladys was a devoted wife and mother. She had one child, Frank S. Jones, born in 1941. Gladys taught piano lesson in her home until her son was a teenager, then she returned to teaching High School English until her retirement in the early 1970s. Gladys and her husband moved to Green Valley, AZ in 1976. Frank M. Jones died in 1982, and since 1983 she has resided at La Vida Llena in Albuquerque. Gladys was active in church work up until the last three years, and was a member of Eastern Hills Baptist Church. She played the piano at various functions at La Vida Llena for many years. She is survived by her son and his wife, Drs. Frank S. and Carole Jones of Albuquerque; grandsons, Jeffrey Jones and wife, Dawn of Larkspur, CA and Gregory Jones of Brooklyn, NY; brother, Walker Shearer, Jr. and wife, Mary Lynn of Indiana; sisters, Irene Colvin and husband, A.B., and Willa Mae Squifflet and husband, Horace, both of Kentucky; nephew, Rev. Robert Shearer; and nieces, Jean Hurt, Jane Phillips, Mary Ann Witt, Cassandra Carr, Cynthia Weller, Barbara Johnson, and Delitha Rinker. Cremation has taken place and Memorial Services will be held Saturday, March 7, 1998, at La Vida Llena, 10501 Lagrima de Oro. Levy -- Karroll J. Levy, 58, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Wednesday, March 4, 1998. She is survived by her daughter, Marie Levy Ryan and husband, Tom and children, Shannon, Cary, Patrick and Keenan Ryan of Albuquerque; son, Greg Levy and children, Darlene, Kyle, and Gregory Levy of Kingsville, TX; son, Matt Levy and wife, Meg and children, Anthony and Dominick Levy of Albuquerque; sister, Sandi Hamilton of Pagosa Springs, CO; nieces, Tonya Rogers and Shannon Rogers; nephew, Aaron Hamilton; former husband and good friend, Turk Levy of Albuquerque; and many loving family members of the Theresa Mac Rodgers family. Manka -- Clara F. Manka, 99, known to many as Aunt Clara, storyteller and author, died in Albuquerque, Saturday, February 28, 1998, within 20 days of her 100th birthday. She is survived by her daughter, Mildred Yeager Murray and her husband, Al of Albuquerque; step-son, Dr. Robert Hall Manka of Washington, DC; granddaughters, Joyce Hooper and husband, Larry of Albuquerque, Patricia Baird LeBeck and husband, David of Santa Rosa, CA; great-granddaughter, Holly Kay Compton; great-grandsons, Michael LeBeck and wife, Jennifer and Jason LeBeck and wife, Brenda; great-great-grandson, Anthony Christian Zenti; and loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Manka; and her son, Lt. Col. John C. Baird; and her sister, Helen Fletcher Collins. She was an active member of Albuquerque Storytellers International. Through the years, countless school children heard her stories and lovingly called her,"Aunt Clara". She continued to tell stories to the children attending Asbury United Methodist Church, where she was a member. She touched many lives through her work as a teacher and counselor and she will be dearly missed. Services will be held Saturday, 1:00 p.m., at Asbury United Methodist Church, 10000 Candelaria NE, with Rev. James Large officiating. Interment will take place at Sandia Memory Gardens. Montoya -- Celso R. Montoya, 60, died at his home in La Jara, NM on March 5, 1998, after a six year battle with cancer. He was a member of the Santo Nino Church in La Jara, NM and an active member of the Guadalupanos; he was a musician and was awarded the New Mexico Traditional Hispanic Folk Music award on October 24, 1997 in Santa Fe, NM, which is in the Hall of Fame in the Onate Center in Alcadle, NM; he was awarded Citizen of the Year in Cuba, NM in 1990, and received an award for Unselfish Devotion to Family, Friends and Community in 1997 by the Fiesta de Cuba, and many other plaques for his unselfish hard work, dedication and loyalty to the community; he retired from the Cuba Independent Schools in 1996. He was preceded in death by his son, Patrocinio Montoya in 1983. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Nestorita Montoya; three sons, Ricardo Montoya of La Jara, NM, Orlando Montoya and his wife, Clarice of Farmington, NM, Jose Montoya and his wife, Jessica of Albuquerque; three daughters, Ramona Lyon and husband, Bill of La Jara, NM, Catalina Lovato and husband, Alex, Maria Mernin and husband, Mike, both of Farmington, NM; 13 grandchildren; three sisters, Sylvia Cordova, Armolita Herrera, both of La Jara, NM, and Celia Sanchez of Albuquerque. Mr. Montoya will lie in state today after 5:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cuba, NM, where a rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m., also at the church. Interment will follow at Santo Nino Catholic Cemetery in La Jara, NM. Peters -- Spencer Douglas Peters, infant son and angel of Douglas and Sandra Peters, died peacefully and with dignity on Monday, March 2, 1998. Spencer is survived by his mother and father; his loving brother and sister, Sam and Alyssa ("Libby") of the family home. Spencer is also survived by his grandparents, Mike and Chizuko McCulloch and E.H. and Mary Hildebrandt of Albuquerque; and his great-grandmother, Angela McDonald of El Paso, TX. Spencer leaves behind his loving uncles and aunts, Alex and Lillian Peters of Albuquerque, Pat and J.P. Soden of Sebastopol, CA, Jean and Manuel Lucero of Albuquerque, Drs. Richard Hildebrandt and Teri Longacre of Menlo Park, CA, Russell and Kathy Hildebrandt of San Antonio, TX, Fred Hildenbrandt of Albuquerque, Susan and Robert Biernacki of Albuquerque, and Joe Hildebrandt of Albuquerque. Spencer will be remembered and missed by his special cousins, Amanda and Alexandra Peters, Alex and Max Soden, Emma Lucero, Nicole, Jesse and Danielle Hildebrandt, Steffani, Aubrey, Bryan and Rebecca Rose Hildebrandt, and Katie and Beau Biernacki. Spencer is also survived by many other relatives, friends and loved one who knew him only through the eyes of this mother and father. Shaffer -- John William Shaffer, 83, of Rio Rancho, NM, passed away February 28, 1998 after a long and valiant struggle to recover from surgeries and pneumonia. A kind and gentle Christian man who gave most generously of his time to God and his family. He volunteered many hours at his church and to helping others. A dedicated employee who loved his work as Chief Electrician. He retired in 1978 after 40 years at Union Drawn Steel, a Division of Republic Steel in Massillon, Ohio. He relocated to Rio Rancho, NM in 1982 to be closer to his daughter and family. Survived by Betty, his wife of 59 years of Rio Rancho; a daughter, Glenda Mowry and son-in-law, Calvin of Rio Rancho; one son, Jack of the home; beloved grandchildren, Curtis Mowry and Beth of Albuquerque, Craig Mowry and Leah of Bernalillo, and Audra Dodson and Tim of Rio Rancho; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; one sister, Dora Haas of Canton, OH; and one brother, Walter Martin of Wilmington, NC. Predeceased by his parents; three sisters; and one brother. Member of First Christian Church, Canton, OH for 60 years, serving as teacher, Deacon and Elder. He was instrumental in organizing a Bus Ministry which was continued for 40 years. Member of the Berean Class for over 50 years. Elder Emeritus of Community Christian Church of Rio Rancho, NM. Stoneman -- Mildred N. Stoneman, 86, passed away March 4, 1998 at her home. A resident of Albuquerque for over 60 years. She was born October 29, 1911 in Goldwaite, Texas and moved to Albuquerque in 1936 after graduating from the University of Texas and married Otis James Stoneman after his service in WWII. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas A. and Effie E. Nichols; her brother, Jack C. Nichols; and her husband, Otis. She is survived by her nieces, Lisa A. Robert and Donnie N. Eichhorst; her nephew, Jack R. Nichols; and her dedicated caregiver, Ed Huntzicker. Burial of cremains to take place at Fairview Memorial Park at a later date. Private family services will be held. Valtierra -- Mr. Edward (Eddie) Valtierra died in Albuquerque at the age of 40. Eddie was a lifelong resident of Albuquerque. He was a member of the Calvary Chapel. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank J. Valtierra; brother, David Valtierra; and step-father, Bill Potts. He worked for the Albuquerque Boys and Girls Club, and at Salazar and Sons Mortuary. He was a loving son, brother, uncle and friend, and he will be greatly missed. Eddie is survived by his mother, Aurora Potts; brothers, Frank Valtierra and wife, Ilene, George Valtierra, Tony Potts and wife, Leticia, and Charles Potts; sisters, Dolores Valtierra, Theresa Lopez and husband, Charles, and Diane Potts; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Eddie will be held on Saturday at Calvary of Albuquerque, 4001 Osuna NE, where the service will begin at 9:00 a.m. Burial will take place at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
