Shinnick -- William A. "Bill" Shinnick died July 25, 2001, in San Marcos,Texas. Born in 1923 in Washington D.C. to Herbert and Margaret Shinnick and graduated from New Trier High School, Northwestern University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Bill was that rare mixture of engineer and philosopher that found a professional home in Industrial Engineering. Throughout his years in the Air Force, the paper industry, Sandia Corporation and NASA, as the founder of the Technology and Transfer Center in Albuquerque, from Ohio, Arizona, New Mexico, Washington D.C. and Texas, Bill often found opportunities for compassion and support of values that enrich daily life. He served on boards and commissions in Albuquerque and Austin that addressed education, public services and public television issues. In retirement, Bill owned a printing company in Austin, did small business consulting, served on the Travis County (Texas) Appraisal Review Board, and participated in real estate management in San Marcos, Texas. Bill began his volunteer career as lay reader and chalice bearer in Albuquerque and continued in Austin at St. David's Episcopal Church. He was a Pastoral Care Counselor at St. David's Hospital, a Yellow Dog Democrat, a defender of equal rights for women, and advocated for the mentally challenged. Bill's spirit still enlivens his life partner, Margaret Glendinning of San Marcos, Texas; his children and their spouses, Ferrell and Anna Abby Shinnick of Austin, Texas, Mathis and Robin Shinnick of Darien, Connecticut, and Mary and Dan Hempker of Platteville, Colorado; his grandchildren, Tristan Shinnick, Jesse and Spencer Hempker, and Rory Shinnick; his Godchildren, Cathy Jo and Carrie Mae Evans and their father, Charlie DiBello. Many of his students in the Schools of Business Administration at St. Edward's University, University of Texas, and University of New Mexico carry his wisdom in their hearts, too. Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., August 11, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church, 129 W. Hutchison, San Marcos, Texas (512-392-6001). Interment will be in Lakeside, Michigan. Donations can be made to your local public library or your favorite charity.
