Oakes -- Peggy Oakes, 67, a resident of Albuquerque since 1969, died Thursday, January 25, 2001. She is survived by her sister, Patsy Heckman and husband, Wayne of Dixon, IL; brother, Jack Oakes and wife, Margaret of Albuquerque; nieces and nephews, Steven, Devon, Saralen, Andrew, Ellen, Deanna and Carla; and special friends, Elizabeth La Chey and husband, Marc and Greita Van Couvering, all of Albuquerque. Miss Oakes graduated from Rochelle Township High School in 1950. She received a R.N. from St. Anthony School of Nursing, Rockford, IL, a B.S.N. from Augustana College, Rock Island, IL, and received a M.S. from the University of New Mexico. Miss Oakes was commissioned as a missionary by the Presbyterian Church, and spent 10 years as a nurse on the Navajo Reservation in Ganado, AZ. She taught nursing for 14 years at the University of Albuquerque. Miss Oakes worked as a public health nurse until retirement, much of the time as a ťrefugee nurse. She served as Chairman of the Board on the Refugee Association for several years. Miss Oakes was an active member of Immanuel Presbyterian Church since 1969 ordained both as a Deacon and an Elder, having served in other capacities. Memorial services will be held Monday, 3:00 p.m., at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 114 Carlisle Blvd. SE, with Rev. Joyce Lieberman and Rev. Chris Lieberman officiating. Interment will take place at White Rock Cemetery in Kings, IL. Friends may visit French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE, Monday, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 114 Carlisle Blvd. SE, 87106 or Sandia Hospice, 4725 Indian School NE, 87110.
