Zahn -- Connie Zahn, age 50, died very early Thursday morning, January 9, 2003 at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales. Ms. Zahn was born October 2, 1952 in Portales to the home of Dorothy and Richard Zahn. Connie grew up in Portales and as a girl was active in Blue Birds and later Campfire. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Portales, NM. Ms. Zahn was a 1970 graduate of Portales High School and played clarinet in the school band. Following high school, Connie married and she and her husband owned and operated a carpet store. Later she worked at the Portales Hardware Store for several years. In 1993, she moved to Phoenix to make her home, there , she was employed by Maricopa County as an Administrative Assistant. Many of her duties concerned ordering and paying for the supplies for the County Elections Dept. Connie's hobbies included crafts of all types, reading and sewing. In 1999, she became seriously ill, and in the spring of 2001 she moved back to Portales to be near her family members. Since that time, she had been a resident of the Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Guy Payne of Animas, NM; grandchild, Talon Payne; parents, Dorothy and Richard Zahn of Portales; brother and sister-in-law, Craig and Sue Zahn of Wrappings Falls, NY; and sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Jim Welch. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 13, 2003 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales with Scott P. Reeves officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bill Stevens, John Gentry, Robert Garcia, Fred Perguson, Joe Buckley and Don Doak All of her many friends will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
