Streeter -- Ruth Cooper Streeter, 84, a resident of Albuquerque since 1950, died Friday, December 27, 2002. She is survived by her niece, Julianne Pacetti and husband, Steve of Lakewood, CO; nephew, Ted Hempel and wife, Kaye of Alliance, NE; and grand-nephews, David and Daniel Hempel, both of Lincoln, NE. She was preceded in death by her sister, Eda Streeter Hempel. She was born in New Rockford, ND and spent her early years there. Miss Streeter received a B.A. from Grinnell College in Iowa, after which she taught social science and history at various high schools in Iowa, Wyoming and Colorado. She moved to New Mexico in 1946 and taught school in Alamogordo before entering the University of New Mexico law school, graduating in 1953. She was law clerk for U.S. District Judge Carl Hatch for three years. In 1957, she began her career with the U.S. Attorneys Office and was the States first female prosecutor. She handled both criminal and civil cases. She served as the First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of New Mexico for many years until her retirement in 1980. She was a member of the State Bar of New Mexico, the Federal District Court for the District of New Mexico, and the Tenth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. She was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. She was past president of the New Mexico Chapter of the Federal Bar Association and of the Albuquerque Lawyers Club. She served on the board of the University of New Mexico Law School. She appeared in Whos Who of American Women and Whos Who of World Women. In 1993, she was honored by the University of New Mexico law school as being one of its distinguished alumnae. In 1994 she received a professionalism award from the State Bar of New Mexico as having exemplified the epitome of professionalism throughout her distinguished legal career. She was a member and past president of the Altrusa Club of Albuquerque. She also served as Governor of District 10 of Altrusa International, and as the International By-laws Chairman. She was a member of Chapter BN of P.E.O. and of Charles Dibrell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Services will be held Friday, 11:00 a.m., at St. Marks on the Mesa Episcopal Church, 431 Richmond Pl. NE.
